I'd watch Bob unwrap a Hersheys Bar just for the enthusiasm alone. Let's get to 8k by Presidents Day !
Thank you... you're too kind! I'm going to name you as my Campaign Manager!
Steve from Tasmania here! The DA-1 really lends itself to specific use cases. I am temporarily living in a tiny home, where space is at a premium. I like having a hifi system in any space I occupy, and the DA-1 (along with it's equally space-shy sister, the SU-1 DAC) make up the basis of a system that sits comfortably in my tiny home. Bob is right - we all have our own preferences and requirements. And for me, this tiny amp is just right. Tiny in stature, not in sound! Thanks Bob!
Tasmania!!! That's crazy! Glad you found some fun-fi that does the trick! Please stay with us! I can't lose my one and only Taz sub!
Gogo from Slovenia here. Now I have two citizenships, one Slovenian and the other Analog...😉, I have to admit that I am tempted by such small amplifiers, just for a test, I have a "normal" set up and I am very satisfied with it...great videos...so refreshing👍
A short signal path helps the electrons on the straight and narrow. Nothing is sadder than a stray electron.
Those small footprint amps are great for a desktop near field application. I bought the Fosi V3 after I saw your video. Now I'm in hifi bliss at my work office.
DAC's...all my favorite UA-camrs always talk about dac's. In my experience I've never needed a dac. I have a 4 unit stereo & have never needed one. I'm not even really sure what their needed for!?! 😅 BUT...I love all your shows & watch every one! 👏🏼🤘🏻
Heard, Chef! It's just another audio thing for us to obsess over! Thanks for watching!
If you are already using analog inputs for everything connected to your receiver, you probably don't need one. If you are trying to connect a computer, streamer, or some other digital source device, you need a good DAC. I wasn't sure about this either. The digital analog converters (dacs) in these devices is supposedly not good at all. But, I felt the little headphone aux signal was working ok for me. Well, I finally got a cheaper SMSL SU-1. I connected my computer to the dac and then to my audio system. Holy crap, I had no idea what I was missing! About a day later, I tried connecting a DVD player to use as a CD transport via the optical output. Talk about audio magic. Man... just try it.
Agreed!@@TheVTRainMan
The golden Goose for me is the Klipsch Forte IV's. If they sound good with that small of a amp, wow just wow. I need to sell one of my kids, lol. Great review by the way.
Just got the Fosi V3, and I can't believe the power coming out of these 'mini' power amps, but in truth, I just use mine for 'surround' speaker power. I don't see these in any way replacing 'tradition' beast amps, but really good nearfield alternative. I am looking at getting a different DAC, but so many to choose from, and I am battling to make a choice in my price cap target. Thank you as always, my friend, for your time, efforts and sharing this with us all.
Let me know where you land on the DAC, Simon!
@@UnitedStatesofAnalog I certainly will do, my friend. Don't hold your breath. If may be a while till the coffers are full enough to get another DAC.
I really enjoy your content Thanks for your review !
Appreciate the kudos!
Getting better my man!
Thanks, Jake! Ironically, sound has been my Achilles heal!
Great video Bob. I got back into the hobby a couple of years ago and discovered "fun-fi" and it was indeed fun. With CAM's help I was able to try out a lot of stuff and learn a lot. It's a great gateway. It has its place. I have a fosi in my office powering some small Q acoustics and it's an awesome little system that I'm sure I'll upgrade (because damn it, it's fun). In my main room I'm experimenting with semi-vintage stuff (80's, 90's) and larger speakers. I'm back into music and loving it. I enjoy your videos, thanks!
Thanks for checking in! Glad to have you in our hobby! It's gonna be fun!
Loving your channel and I love my SMSL AO-300 -- which you didn't recommend, exactly, but it's very similar to the AL200.
Good choice! Super impressed with SMSL stuff! But now they are ghosting me for some reason. Weird business, this internet stuff!!!
Great video - love the "post credits" elements. Another really great FunFi review, and a DAC that I have been eyeing as a replacement to my SMSL SU8-S that blew a fuse last year. I have been using a SMSL C200, which is a fantastic headphone amp for IEMs but a bit on the warm side. It was a warehouse deal that I could not refuse, and while loads better than the DX3 pro+, still not quite to the level of the crisp clean SU8-S. One comment, obviously you never lived in a New York apartment (a Texas closet is bigger), so every inch is important. Why do you think Mytek is so small (yet still $5K... about a month's rent). Keep up the great (and significant amount of) work!
Thanks, Chris! I have good friends in Manhattan tan. They here bathroom is in the kitchen! I feel your pain! Thanks for checking in!
Fire up that Van Halen record!
Hey Bob, great video. Do you know if the D-6s has an auto wake up function (when it receives an spdif signal)?
TLDR, I had a nice THX certified system I had to part with a few years ago due to a possible move. I just started getting back into hifi and I didn't want to shell out thousands upon thousands of dollars to get that system back or something close to it lol. So I purchased one of these all in one DAC Amps streamer things and hooked it into my small system in my office at home and wow! I can say that my thousands of dollars system was replaced by these funfi items! It's going to be hard to go back to those old 50lb amps when I can get close to that with something that fits in my hand. I may eventually give in and rebuild a modernized version of my old setup but that will be way into the future. Im a piece at a time kinda guy 😆. Great video and thanks for covering these little funfi items!
Thanks for the notes! I'm glad I'm not the only one w appreciates the value in some of the fun-fi!!!
If signal path length really mattered, then the dongle DAC would be the best option. However, they are not the best, but some are really good for what they are.
I think that the DA1 is meant to go with their SU1 DAC. Also, I think that there is a speaker amplifier in the six series that matches the D6s. 😊
My favourite track for vocal texture has to be Tom Waits - ThePiano Has Been Drinking. Great video Bob, thanks.
I've been getting into Tom Waits recently!
@@UnitedStatesofAnalog Small Change is a fantastic album and one of my faves from Waits.
Talking about wallpaper would fall in the $2.99 value meal, Bartles & Jaymes, and Double Gulp category.... only *some* of us will get it...
Precisely!
Does the Smsl -D6S sounds very bright? I am using the Dali Spektor 2 which is on the brighter sounding side. Not sure it will be a good match?
How does that D-6s sound compared to the SU-1? I already have the SU-1. I was thinking of upgrading but I don't need MQA. I was thinking more like a Geshelli J2 (with no options).
fun-fi! i live it!!! i mentioned on a different audio review that i got a topping amp from a land far far away for a pair of hard to drive planar headphones and the snobbery came to inform me of my mistake.
"nay" i said, "im having fun and your asshole snarkery cant stop me"!!!
fun-fi is exactly right. anyone who things audio quality hides behind a price tag can go away
Heard, Chef!
Why are my comments vanishing?
what is mqa
Master Quality Authenticated... I think. Literally!
My understanding is that MQA is a lossy digital music format misrepresented by the company (MQA Ltd) as lossless master quality. I also understand MQA went into administration during April 2023. Further, Tidal have now adopted FLAC as their hi-res audio format of choice (as of June 2023).
@@UnitedStatesofAnalog Isn't FLAC better?
Don't have to watch, but I will to know this is a NO.
I Hve a different name for where these came from.
Analog?
Anyway I applaud you for your Diversity!!! LOL
By the way DIGITAL filters are strictly used to personalize the Sound to your Taste. No reasoning unless you are an Electronics engineer 😊
Thanks! 🙏
I wonder what the profit margin is with this small amp that cost only $50.00...? I say the big heavy amp manufacturers are in trouble, but they know it and need to get on the same boat.
I do NOT approve of Amazon’s boxing….. way too much box to product ratio ha
