This is the 4th video in 5 minuits I watch about how to wear a Plaid. And yes. It looks like Scots are so badass they don´t even need to stand up to get into their Kilt. Also the Plaid is probably the most impressiv pice of clothing I´ve ever seen. "What a nice looking cloth. And now it´s a manskirt. And now a Backpack. And now a cloke. And now a Tent. And when it´s expecialy windy on the Highlands i´m preaty sure the old Scots went flying with that thing..." Now i want one too... looks comfy...
Thanks. The particular one in this video is my family's, I appreciate the compliment. They are indeed comfortable. Share a picture when you get one. Thanks for watching. #KiltOn!
Seriously, emulating the good in the world- be it a Kilt or your donation to surgeons around the world- IS the sincerest form of flattery, this a compliment to your culture that others would borrow from it
Kilts [or, Cilts] have been worn all over the world long BEFORE Scotland, the tartan is also OLDER than Scotland, also patterns like ARAN is Spanish/Portuguese.. first known kilts: 12,000 years before Scotland... but don'y take my word for it... RESEARCH IT! My opinion: LEARN YOUR HISTORY!
Too bad the " skirt " isnt Scottish...you guys basically wore a toga ... the skirt which is what the modern kilt is ...was not worn by Scots till about the 18th century . The Galician wore it in 400 ad .... rhe tartan authority had admitted as much ...so...😏
Amazing what you can do with a sheet of fabric. So much of traditional clothing the world over consists of different ways of wearing sheets of material in all sorts of sizes and configurations.
i am truly amazed. I've never known about this. I just thought some Scottish granny hand-sewed all the pleats. Fabulous, fabulous video. Thank you so much. And the music was lovely; energizing without enervating.
Thanks for watching! The music was a fun collaboration with my wife, the Celtic composer / musician Christiane Cargill Kinney; thanks for mentioning it. Check her out here christianekinney.com/ #KiltOn!
I think the fabric I used is about 2meters X 7meters (7'x21'). This is a rough estimate. Just make sure it is double wide; and that can range anywhere from 60" to 80" in a fabric store. The length can be any preference you wish. I don't mind the folding, so I go from 5 to 7 meters for the legnth. You can go a lot shorter. I have made a folded kilt from as small as 6 feet of fabric(with not many folds on back). I hope this helps! Kilt On!
+Dan McNeill Depending on the floor or surface you fold the pleats on, I found it will sometimes snag on the belt if you lay it first. I have friends that do that, but it just goes back to what I said on the video, it is all a personal preference. I have a belt that has a hook clasp, and I am guaranteed to have it snag on a pleat or two. Experiment & let us know what works for you! Thanks for asking! Kilt On.
Sometimes it will slightly shift when folding it, so the center might not match up on the back end of the process. Outdoors is especially hard to keep it straight. Thanks for asking.
Duuuuuuude! The ending of the video with the "great shirt" portion! Hell yeah! I'm getting ready to pleat my great kilt for a National Tartan Day video now and this has been extremely helpful. Thank you!
that's so cool. I don't know anything about kilts and got here from my recommended feed, but it's mindblowing how many possibilities and variations you get with a single piece of fabric. more useful than i'd ever have thought.
I can verify the pockets will hold a six pack of beer each side. I did that once camping when I was wondering around one night from campsite to campsite. Started six full in one side put the empties in the other side as I finished them. Then headed back to get a new six and put bug spray on my legs.
Making a custom nutcracker of an Outlander character for my bud, and watching hours of the TV show and couldn't figure out what the devil was going on with the kilt. Thank you for your time and video! It all makes sense now :D
Thanks for watching. Thanks for the nice comments. You are always welcome to wear my family's' tartan; Clan Kinney. I have purchased my grand kilt, Irish Revenge tartan. I am learning to pleat it and wear it. I found your video great for showing what I need tolearn to m2kq th3 pockets but your hands move so fdast I can not duplicate it even after many reviews.
TO FOLD A POCKET: 1. Grab the front inner corner of the top layer. Run your finger back along the edge, about 18 inches (45cm). 2. Fold the two points together. It will make a “V” of fabric. You can see this clear on my first pocket fold. At 04:35 of the video. 3. Take both points and tucks them into your belt at the back. Push them into very well between your back and the tartan. This will form a long pocket running down your side. - Basically you are just pinching the front edge, and part from the middle edge and pushing them into your belt. The “V” fold is the pocket. To make a smaller pocket, just go back around the bottom edge less. I hope this helps. #KiltOn!
This is a very good video. And I'm actually thinking about buying my first great kilt to change it up. I like the different options and varieties of a great kilt. Well done. Slainte mhath!
No dumb questions. Some did. There is a lot of military history of the usage on kilts, and in general, when they had to sleep out or while on guard duty, they elongated the great kilt for a "blanket" type of cover. #KiltOn!
I am 5'10". The fabric I used is about 2meters X 7meters (7'x21'). This is a rough estimate. I got mine from Sport Kilt, and I am not sure of their basic size. I’m in awe. Didn’t know any of this. Learned something today. Do professionals wear on daily businesses? Say...a doctor? I’d assume yes in Scotland. Wondering if outside kilt Country.
Thanks for asking. I have many friends that do wear kilts everyday (here in Los Angeles), but mostly the modern versions with pockets, not this Great Kilt. I don't know of any professionals that wear them daily. A lot of my friend and clan celebrate "Freedom Friday" and wear them every Friday. The family back in the homeland normally only wear them to formal occasions, and family gatherings. Most of them wear the modern version to be honest as it is faster and easier; and depending on the material, cheaper. We only wear the Great Kilts when we go to events like the Highland Games, a Celtic festival or a Renaissance Festival. Thanks for asking, & thanks for watching. #KiltOn!
Amazing, thanks for showing. I have always wondered how it was done. It's so minimalist, uncomplicated and practical; but isn't what you've folded really a plaid?
@neilbain8736 All kilts are a plaid, the term tartan is applied once it is registered to a specific Clan or family. A plaid is a crossbarred pattern piece of cloth. A tartan is an associated or registered pattern of plaid cloth. A kilt is either of the above folded into a type of knee-length non-bifurcated skirt with pleats at the back. This pattern is a registered plaid, so it is not a plaid, but a tartan. Once folded, it is a kilt. Thanks for watching. #KiltOn!
The kilt in the video is the Scots-Irish tartan from #SportKilt. You can get a modern one or a great kilt like the one in the video. Thanks for watching. #KiltOn!
I love learning about different cultures. I was reading a book, and one of the characters are Scottish, and he mentioned a kilt being 18 feet of fabric, and I just had to find out how they get that much fabric on, lol. (Another character is Welsh, and I was looking up how to pronounce their language, lol)
madeline rose Modern kilts are made from all types of fabric. I recommend getting them from Sport Kilt, they are a great company (www.sportkilt.com). Women did indeed wear them, and still do.
They can be any fabric but a tartan wool is traditional, historical kilts would’ve been made of untreated wool which still has the lanolin (oil from the sheepskin) in it, making it extremely water-resistant and durable. And wool stays warm when wet, which is somewhat helpful in the highlands
Great video but I can only find the materials in 1 one meter length near me where is a good reputable shop to order it from and a good belt without breaking the bank thanks in advance
Do you find a thicker material tends to be easier to work with? I've been wearing a kilt regularly for the last little while but I've just purchased a couple of patterns from a local fabric land. I can make my pleats and it does tend to look quite sharp but I find the fabric being so thin (it's hot here currently) is rather hard to adjust. Additionally, do you have a method of taking off the great kilt if you wanted to wear it the next day or would you just refold your pleats and start over? Thanks for the very informative video!
I am currently in southern California, so I tend to go with a thin material. I have had no trouble adjusting mine, but I do recommend a fabric softener, it makes it more pliable for the different folds. When I take it off, it depends if it is going to be worn the next day. If I am at a festival and will wear it daily: I lay down, or across a table, and drop my belt, it allows for the pleats to stay in place. The next morning, I just sit back down on where I dropped and unfolded it, then refold it, belt it, and go. Just like in the video but in reverse. If I am putting it up for storage, I just pop the belt and let it fall to the floor, then fold it up on the set, as to not get any wrinkles. Thanks for asking; and for watching. #KiltOn!
The fabric I used is about 2meters X 7meters (7'x21'). The height needs to be almost as tall as your body, as you can see in the video when I lay down. The length can be as small as 4 meters, but you will cut down on the versatility, and the kinds of folds you can do. I recommend nothing less than 5 meters long. I used 7 meters long, and it is heavy, but gives me more than I need for all the folds. Thank You. Thanks for watching. #KiltOn!
Thanks for this great tutorial, i'm french and i love scottish culture ans country. What is the minimum size to make a kilt like this ? I read that the minimum is 5 yards to 9 yards, is it ok? I want to make a kilt for my son (12 years old) I buy 2 differents tartan : _ 9 meters long by 1.50 meters wide _ 27 meters long by 1.50 meters wide (6 kilt of 5 yards long) Thanks for helping :)
What exactly is the "stay" referred to (that keeps the part draped over the shoulder held in place), which was used in preference to a pin. I'm not too crazy about poking holes in my kilt.
It is like a hair clasp. It is a circle with a long piece that goes with it. The stay allows you to grasp the kilt, without having to stab a pin through it. If it is not clear, I can try to break mine out and take a picture if you need. You can also google these terms to see a picture of the same thing but for hair: " hair clip - round barrette - hair pin - hair slide " #KiltOn!
The fabric I used is about 2meters X 7meters (7'x21'). Just make sure it is double wide for the height; and that can range anywhere from 60" to 80" in a fabric store. I got my kilt yesterday and tried it out today. I'm glad to have a kilt now that wasn't invented in England, like the usual "modern kilt." I think I'm going to like it, but it's going to take some experimenting. I thought that this video was really good, and I know I couldn't have done without it, but it's a lot harder than I thought it would be. It would be helpful if the video showed what Sean is doing behind his back, first with the pockets and then with reaching around to bring the kilt over the shoulder. One thing I'm wondering: Sean does the pockets first and then continues with the traditional over-the-shoulder business. Are the pockets an important step here, or is that just one option?
+Don Ulin It is just an option. I like having them personally. Pockets or not, the folds stand on their own. Great suggestion. If I make another one, I will try a 2 camera set up. The over the shoulder fold is nothing more than me feeling for the bottom of the outer layer, and working my way around the bottom close to the center, then pulling it up and over. Each hand does this, and they meet in the shoulder. I hope that helps. #KeepOnKilting
If it makes you feel any better, Thomas Rawlinson did not invent the little kilt, he only introduced it to his workers (maybe). The little kilt had existed before Rawlinson was born.
Thanks for that reassurance. Thomas, if you could provide some evidence for that early date of the modern kilt design, I would be more convinced. Your credibility as any kind of an interpreter of history is certainly not helped any by your use of the confederate flag (the banner to protect slavery) as your icon.
Well to begin with, this flag was not the banner to protect slavery, it was the banner that represented the men fighting for the Confederacy. Your average Confederate soldier would not have owned slaves, and many were actually against slavery. My ancestors on my dad's side fought for the South, so I like to represent my heritage, and the flag looks pretty cool. There was a painting (I'll have to find which one and link you to it in a later post) from around 1713 if I'm not mistake on the year, it showed a noble of some sort wearing the phillabeg. The phillabeg itself is just what you get when you don't sew the two lengths of cloth together, seeing as the old mills usually produced single width cloth and then sewed it selvedge to selvedge to make the feileadh-mor, the halved type of kilt was most likely tried long before there were paintings of it. It's more likely that Rawlinson just popularized it for industrial work as it was much for practical for working around heavy machinery than a great kilt.
I think I'd prefer this method of kilt rather than one made with traditional stitching, so much more kilt and it looks better. Is there any wrong way of doing it or is it up to the individual and can you wear boots and ankle socks
It is truly an individual preference, just like the pictures I included at the end of the video show many different styles. My brother wears our family kilt with his cowboy boots, and it oddly works. As many have commented here, the history is very blurry, and the lore of the kilt varies from country to country. Kilts are worn in Scotland, Wales, Ireland, England, France and even down in Spain & Greece (including all the countries they colonized like Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and United States.) Each country has a little variation in what people wear with them, and so should you. Kilt On!
OMG I can't get over the fact that this is the same way a saree is worn (done up) except the pleats go in the front and the last apron is longer and wraps around and over the shoulder. Standing they start with one wrap around the body then finger pleat the remainder (with their hand) in the front then tuck the top of the pleats into the the first wrap and swing the long apron over their shoulder. Of course they use a very light, light fabric, compared to the kilt, and the overall length is 5-9 yds. Thanks for this info and demonstration.
Thanks for sharing Sheila. Yep, it is similar to many other traditional wrapped garments from all around the world. At a certain point in history when the looms were common, many cultures found similar ways to wrap cloth around a body. That is why I always say that anyone can wear a kilt, they are more universal than most think. Thanks for watching! # KiltOn!

J’adore les kilts. Lorsque que j’étais adolescente j’en avais deux. Un à dominante rouge et un autre à dominante verte. ❤️❤️
Awesome. Time to get a new one! Thanks for watching. #KiltOn!
EXCELLENT VIDEO
Thanks! #KiltOn!
This is going to seem like a dumb question, but did they just use it as a blanket at night and wear it through the day?
No dumb questions. Some did. There is a lot of military history of the usage on kilts, and in general, when they had to sleep out or while on guard duty, they elongated the great kilt for a "blanket" type of cover. #KiltOn!
I think so
It likely wasn’t universal, but I imagine many did
Great video, thanks!
Thanks & thanks for watching! #KiltOn!
Love the fast forward also the mini kilt statement give the Lassie's something to talk about.
Thanks, and Thanks for watching! #KiltOn!
Mums here “get up it’s time for school.”
Mums in Scotland: “id better be seeing you laying on that floor getting ready for school.”
Ha!
lol Thanks for watching. #KiltOn!
If I had to do that every morning, I'd probably fall asleep at the part where you lie down like half the time 😄
😂
very nice :D . thanks for showing.
Thanks & thanks for watching! #KiltOn!
Thanks for the great video 👍 How tall are you and what width do you require? Finding it hard to get tartan wider than 54" ...
I am 5'10". The fabric I used is about 2meters X 7meters (7'x21'). This is a rough estimate. I got mine from Sport Kilt, and I am not sure of their basic size. #Kilt On!
I’m glad there is an easier way to wear a modern Kilt.
Amo homem de saia!!! Acho terrivelmente atraente!❤️❤️❤️
Obrigado por assistir. (Usando Google Tradutor) #KiltOn!
Yes, great kilt is one of the common names for a belted plaid, as it was a precursor to the modern kilt.
#KiltOn!
i want one :O i want embrace my Irish and Scottish heritage.
It is a lot of fabric. Thanks for watching. #KiltOn!
Great teaching video. How about one showing out a woman would wear a tartan?
Great idea. In the works already! Thanks for watching. #KiltOn
Great instructional video!
+onestooge I have a couple questions: 1) are they alway wool? 2) where do you get one?) 3) did women ever wear them? Thanks!
madeline rose Modern kilts are made from all types of fabric. I recommend getting them from Sport Kilt, they are a great company (www.sportkilt.com). Women did indeed wear them, and still do.
onestooge I was always taught women didn’t wear them. Not traditionally anyway. I wonder if I could wear one and not feel guilty.
They can be any fabric but a tartan wool is traditional, historical kilts would’ve been made of untreated wool which still has the lanolin (oil from the sheepskin) in it, making it extremely water-resistant and durable. And wool stays warm when wet, which is somewhat helpful in the highlands
cool. had kilts from tailors when I was a kid. This is better. thanks
Thanks for Watching! #KiltOn!
You bet! Thanks for watching. #KiltOn!
Very good ❤️👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you very much & thank for watching. #KiltOn!
Great video but I can only find the materials in 1 one meter length near me where is a good reputable shop to order it from and a good belt without breaking the bank thanks in advance
I use Sport Kilt. Here is a link to them. sportkilt.com/ Thanks for asking. @SportKilt #KiltOn!
#KiltOn!
what length and width would you recommend for a height of 178cm?
I want to make a kilt for my son (12 years old)
I buy 2 differents tartan :
_ 9 meters long by 1.50 meters wide
_ 27 meters long by 1.50 meters wide (6 kilt of 5 yards long)
Thanks for helping :)
How did it turn out?
What exactly is the "stay" referred to (that keeps the part draped over the shoulder held in place), which was used in preference to a pin. I'm not too crazy about poking holes in my kilt.
It is like a hair clasp. It is a circle with a long piece that goes with it. The stay allows you to grasp the kilt, without having to stab a pin through it. If it is not clear, I can try to break mine out and take a picture if you need. You can also google these terms to see a picture of the same thing but for hair: " hair clip - round barrette - hair pin - hair slide " #KiltOn!
Thanks for a brilliant and inspiring video - I look forward to trying this!
Thanks, and Thanks for watching! #KiltOn!
the pulling it over your head doesn't work well when you're 6'4"
The amount of material needs to be proportional to your height.
A ken whit ye mean likes ,
Yeah I bought one expecting it was big enough but I can just barely get it in my shoulders without showing off my whole back end
Very nice!!!
Thanks; and Thanks for watching! #KiltOn!
About how much fabric was used in this video? I’m guessing that it was sold by the yard at 54”?
The fabric I used is about 2meters X 7meters (7'x21'). Just make sure it is double wide for the height; and that can range anywhere from 60" to 80" in a fabric store. The length can be any preference you wish.
Kilt On!
What are the exact measurements of your kilt I cannot seem to get mine to folding all those variations
The fabric I used is about 2meters X 7meters (7'x21'). It is long, for a great kilt you need a really long tartan. I hope this helps! #KiltOn!
Круто! Никогда не думал, что килт такая универсальная вещь! Спасибо!
пожалуйста!
# KiltOn!
I have to say I like the pink and purple tartan.
Shirt or FABULOUS CAPE!!
Exactly. Thanks for watching. #KiltOn!
