I would say this is a rather clumsy operation, but the results look great. Pun intended. Thank you for making this. At the moment I only use a short kilt, but I might try to make a Great Kilt for the viking markets. I know its not historically correct, but most people dont know that, so I bet I could pull it off. They had belts and textile, so combining them in a kilt-like fashion isnt all that far-fetched. The vikings might have done it.
no, they didn't. And even light reading and research shows that kilts and kilt like clothing was not something those in scandinavia and of "viking" culture wore or would wear. but you're correct about most people not knowing this information and so you could pull it off, but be warned that if someone like me walks up to you gets talking to you and they find out you're wearing it as a "viking" kilt you're gonna get a history lesson. or simply told that you're wrong and shown and told what is accurate from what information we have on viking age Europe. not alot survived through the years since the tenth century and before but from all the finds they all point towards actual pants and winingas being the only leg dedicated covering(Linen Kirtles and wool tunics being body coverings that also covered part of the legs as well as the torso.) if you wanted to pull it off just say you're a alternate reality or alternate universe viking, shit like that. make come out of the fantasy genre and you'll be golden. however dont use a tartan for a "viking themed" kilt, they didnt have tartan, homespin some linen or wool in a solid color or store buy linen or wool to make it and if you want to add "flare" check into card weaving and card weave some trim for it.
Wyatt Berry considering how much the vikings borrowed I wouldn't doubt that some intelligent viking borrowed the style at all...considering how they had to steal their women..I bet sewing skills were not real good...lol..
Looks absolutely awesome. I have two tips for you; 1)a good rule of thumb, to find the perfect spot to start your pleating, kneel down with your ankles at the apron edge, your starting pointwill be at your knee. 2)when you put on your pinular brooch, gather ends and pinch it so all the plaid will be the in it. Looks better, and the material will not have a bunch of holes.
Hello. I came across your video before purchasing a out of stock wool plaid suiting at a online fabric store. The fabric I got was 69" wide, 5 yards long and 95% wool, 5% nylon. I have a 46" waist, and with how the plaid lined up, five yards was plenty! I followed your instructions and now have a very stylish great kilt to wear at events! You were right to wear undies because of how itchy the wool is! The fabric hit my sweaty bare chest and I started itching like crazy! Thanks for the video!!
I'm native, and purchased great kilt material at an old fort during an event last year. I started using it as my matchcoat. When asked about its use being documented, I couldn't at that time. I have since found documentation of Highlanders being taken captive and/or killed by natives during the French & Indian War era, thus, a great kilt would have been claimed and worn by us. Shawnee/Cherokee/Seneca/Miami.
rodnrach I am from NC. I was descended from the Scots- Irish who migrated south down the Watauga trail, Same people that settled in Waxhaw NC. Waxhaw was the birthplace of Andrew Jackson. My grandma made my brother a kilt, no pattern, by memory.
Well done sir! Not sure if anyone has clarified yet, but the first pleating was to the sett- the pattern continued thru the pleats. Your second pleating was to the stripe, you chose the vertical stripe to show. The reverse you showed (the horizontal stripe showing) is just a variation of pleating to the stripe.
Fabulous, thank you so much. This is perfect, not sure how much plaid to buy for a 7 year old but I'll figure it out :) Thank you for posting this brilliant video.
I made this video before I had a computer with a video-editor. I have been tempted to take it down and remove those distractions, but I'm not sure if it is worth the risk.
I went a full 9 yards with mine. I'm a MacGregor so am alright with using the Rob Roy tartan as it's super easy to find. It's very time consuming but the after effect is pretty impressive. With the 9 yards my pleats are much deeper and I can opt to not wear in over the shoulder when the weather in inclement and instead opt to wear it as a hood. Oh, and it makes for a great blanket at events. LOL
really informative, some videos have some harder angles to see from, thanks for going through it all. How do you determine the width? I'm 6' 4" would I need to go any higher than 60" or is that perfectly fine?
Hi great video, I was just wondering if your sword is wooden or non metal,I'm looking for one that I can basically bring into bars on Halloween,if yours fits the bill could you please let me no where you got it.A Celt shouldn't go drinking without his sword!!!
Sorry it took forever to reply, but that is a wooden sword. I got it at a Renaissance fair from Hollow Earth Swordworks. I now have a metal sword but have never strapped it on to this kilt.
I believe I state at the beginning, and in a few other comments, it is 5 yards/meters long. A yard is slightly less than a meter. Therefor it is 1.5 m wide.
Thanks you , i have one piece of tartan of 4 x 1.5 meter , i try and the result was good for me. I enjoy to dress the kilt like that , i feel more confortable that the commercials ones that i have and it looks more authentic .
Awesome you look.. So is that a 9 yard length of the tartan? May I also ask the width of what would the width be for a great kilt?..its been awhile since this video.. so I hope you can help me ...Angie
Thank you. I enjoyed this video. And I love that you never cut. Dog, phone, whatever you just kept going. Good job. Being honest and positive. Thank you. You look very nice in your kilt. I need to find out how to dress as a woman in a tartan. I want to join in the fun during the Scottish games etc. Any hints for me?
+Alexzandra Broyles You might want to find a book by Herbert Norris called "Ancient European Costume and Fashion." Maybe if I find the material and a model I'll do a female versions belted plaid. Click here to see something like a womans tartan: theweebsite.com/garb/norris1/n1_040_b.gif
Not really, I just brought this on Ebay. Look for a Wool-Cotton blend, no poly or rayon blends. Check also your Sunday paper for discount coupons to local fabric stores.
Thank you for such a good demonstration. I can follow well, but I was a bit confused about where on the lines you were leasing your "lines" for the pleats? Any way it's a great video, thank you!
+Edith Ann It depends on what kind of pleat you are using, I prefer the military version in which you let the bolded stripe on the plaid show outward, so gather up the pleat in the middle of the blank area.
The fabric for a great-kilt is usually 4-6 yards in total length. Once upon a time, the looms used to weave the fabric only made 20-30 inch widths. Because of this limitation, the weaver typically wove 8-12 yards of fabric, cut that length in half, then stitched the two pieces together to make a plaid 4-6 yards in length and 50-60 inches in width.
Mr. Locksly I have a question and I am hoping you will help me. I am in the SCA and I ordered a great kilt to create a very late Scottish persona. I liked your instructions the best and I followed them on how to pleat my great kilt unfortunately I started with 9 yards because that is what the company that I ordered from sent me. I am a 44 inch waist so I figured the extra yardage would be fine and every source online seemed to indicate 9 yards was standard for a great kilt like the look of the pleats the way you did them and need to know what you think. This thing wraps around me twice. should I measure off 4 yards or maybe two and lop them off or should I just deepen the pleats by an entire column? I anxiously await your suggestion. I have a party I plan to wear this to next week and really need to know something this week. Thanks for your time and attention to this query.
+Randall J You probably will have to crop about 3-4 yds from your plaid, even if you do try deeper pleats. I am also a 42" waist and you see what 5 yds does for me. If your plaid is 60" wide it will work too. Otherewise you can reuse the discarded portion to make it wider. Nine yds is only needed if the material is 30" wide. In which case you should cut it length wise and make it 4 yds by 60". If you have any more questions feel free to ask.
You're so right about not needing 7 yards. I have around seven and I get a huge butt and have no clue what to do with it. I'm a LARPer who wears a kilt so I can't have a giant bum.
Hi their the material is called a plaid gealic for blanket the patern is tartan the pleats are called kilts and the first 1 you did was pleating to sett and the second is pleatinhg to stripe
I have three kilts. the Campbell. the Buchanan and the Hunter...my goal is 35 of them... Do tell how many different kinds of kilts? and what's your favorite?
+Archer Montgomery I'm afraid I don't know anything at all about clan tartans or colors. This is the only kilt I have and the only pleat methods that I know. As stated in the video, I like the military pleats better. Sometimes I wonder if one pleat method works better for how to drape the upper half of the kilt.
There are other a lot of Tartan kilts which are present and they also have their family names. I recommend you a website where you can all kilt companies selling tartan kilts. kiltguide.com/ If you want more kilts ,do check this website.
It is a wooden sword. I got at Hollow Earth Sword works in a Renaissance Festival a while ago. Wooden swords are also called "wasters" which you might find on By-the-sword or Ebay.
You need the whole 9 yards when the cloth is traditionally woven only 25-27 inches wide. You cut it in half and sew the panels together to give you 4.5 yards @ about 50-57 inches or so wide. :)
Hello! I'm a LARPer and i need a kilt for the next season... Knowing that LARPs are mostly in summer and that i'm 5 ft 5 tall and quite heavy (maybe a bit less than you are), what size fabric should i pick? Thanks!
As I have stated in other comments, a cotton-wool blend is best. Wool pleats and drapes best. I think I also state in the video that this is 60" wide and 3-5 yards long, which should work for any body size or shape. What ever you do, stay away from poly or rayon blend; it will cook you in the summer and freeze you in the winter.
Thanks for the video. So, it is allowed to spread the belt under the tartan? You're the first I saw do that. The previous ones always slip the belt under the freshly pleated tartan. Do you have any idea why? I thought it was a compulsory procedure. Thank you 😀
The traditional tartan 8 yard kilt nowadays is price wise beyond the reach of the average Joe on Main Street. Therefore there may be a resurgence of THE BELTED PLAID being worn more and more by men at Scottish gatherings in place of the traditional 8 yard tartan kilt. These mills seem to want to price themselves out the kilt building business.
I'm not sure if you can even find material wider than 60." Notice this 60" wide material is rather bulky on me at 5'7". What ever size you are it may take some practice and adjusting. There are more ways to drape your kilt once it is belted.
With through the roof prices attached to 8 yard traditional kilts. There may be a resurgence of THE BELTED PLAID being worn more and more by men at highland gatherings and Scottish Highland Games. The average Joe on Main Street cannot comfortably afford traditional 8 yard tartan kilt.
So I was going to tell you that the first time you pleated to the set. OK question I just bought 9 yards of tartan for my Great Kilt, you are saying I only need 5 yards?
Sorry it took me a while, I got it at a renaissance faire. You can find a similar muslin shirt on Ebay or By-the-sword. This is actually not a Jacobite shirt or Leina.
Do they just sell your clans weave pattern? I mean, I'm thinking that I have to order the tartan online. If someone could comment back to me that would be amazing! I'd like to buy the material and sew one for my boyfriend instead of ordering one. Thanks!
SOrry it took forever to reply, I live in TX too. You will have to find a book on Clan Tartan patterns and that will tell you which kind you need. I didn't really have anything in mind when I got this one. I just liked red with the bold black stripe.
Sorry, but I'm really not sure about clan tartans or sewing a tailored kilt. There are a few other videos here that talk about sewing a kilt. Maybe you can do the pleats like in this video and sew the. BTW I'm in Texas too. I got this material on Ebay, it is a plaid wool-cotton blend.
How on earth do you pleat and wrap 8 yards of wool? Like I also say in the video 5 yards of wool is difficult enough. Maybe if it were a wool-poly blend you could do it comfortably.
The plaid has been far too long.. It was usually about 4 / 5 inches above the knee. This then made sure the bottom edge could not get wet and chafe the backs of the legs.
anything more than 6 yards is just over kill!!! since doublewide woll is less than 100 years old , the amount of woll was doubled ,cut in half and bookmatched this was done to get the plaide useing the acient measuring system of I suspect the finished amount of wool was about 5 yards
I don't drink at all. I'm just not very good at cinematography. If you were sober and read the description you would see that the dog died about 2 yrs ago. Likewise I have since edited and re-posted a new version of this video.
Are you insane?!! What do you mean you certainly don't need 8 yards! You only need 5?! A kilt is not a kilt unless it is 8 yards! That is how it was traditionally in scotland.
This has to be the best video with both kinds of pleats and since he puts the belt down first he can roll right into the kilt when it's pleated.
How lovely to actually see the kilt come together. Great!
Beautiful tartan, the only suggestion I would make is you should be wearing the kilt above your knee. Fun video.

Wyatt Berry A lot of the Hebrides Highlanders in Scotland have mixed Viking ancestry as well you know, but no, they didn't wear kilts in Scandinavia.
thank you for that vid ^^ the kilt looked great, and you, sir, look really cute
Looks absolutely awesome. I have two tips for you;

There is no man's garment that is more comfortable than a well fitted 8 yard all wool Scottish kilt.

That is an interesting fact that may need some more research to see how true it may be. Thanks for sharing with us however.
scalp too maybe.
Definitely a possibility as many immigrants settled on lands near, or on, Cherokee lands.
rodnrach I am from NC. I was descended from the Scots- Irish who migrated south down the Watauga trail, Same people that settled in Waxhaw NC. Waxhaw was the birthplace of Andrew Jackson. My grandma made my brother a kilt, no pattern, by memory.
More likely it was highlanders killing and capturing natives as the natives were crushed by the Europeans.
Well done sir!

Thank you! This is exactly what I needed. I really appreciate you providing the measurements too. :-)
Fabulous, thank you so much. This is perfect, not sure how much plaid to buy for a 7 year old but I'll figure it out :) Thank you for posting this brilliant video.
+Karra Reilly For a 7 yr old I think you only need 45" wide and 3 yds long. Authentic wool might be to much, trigger-flannel should also work.
Thank you. You are a pleasure to watch.
Great Video/instruction. A Million Thanks.
damn!! thats a dapper attire!! changes my perspective!!
That's a beautiful plaid.
that's so awesome! thank you so much for the demonstration!
Very good video :-) I didn't even mind the phone at the end haha.
I made this video before I had a computer with a video-editor. I have been tempted to take it down and remove those distractions, but I'm not sure if it is worth the risk.
Thank you for the information! Now I just have to find a tartan seller to by my fabric.
MrGWHLevy Try Rougish Highlander in Dayton, OH for your material. Great prices!
to do what by your fabric ?
Most educational; many thanks for posting this. Aye.
Pazhalooshta
The first demonstration was "pleated to the sett." The second was "pleated to the stripe or line", which is the military pleat.

This is so great! Thank you for posting!
Consolation; That old floor loom sure does look more inviting now , more than ever. HOW MUCH DO YOU WANT IT? That there Belted Plaid?
`-the looms of that era were half as wide so 9 yards was sewn together to create a 5' wide by 4.5-5 yard long plaid.
Thank you so much for your video! very informative!
Very nice.

I like how your pantless during the entire video until you actually put on the kilt. Keeping things original! LOL
Not all plaids are tartan but all tartan are plaids. What makes it a tartan is the symmetrical repeated pattern or "sett".
awesome...thank you for sharing
Mr. Locksly I have a question and I am hoping you will help me. I am in the SCA and I ordered a great kilt to create a very late Scottish persona. Particularly for some of us smaller guys, 8 yards is total overkill, especially if it's a warm day.

I just ordered for my tartan from a URL contains the words Scot and web, since I can post the URL here.

Thanks for the video. So, it is allowed to spread the belt under the tartan? You're the first I saw do that. The previous ones always slip the belt under the freshly pleated tartan. Do you have any idea why? I thought it was a compulsory procedure. Thank you 😀
It's all personal preference. Some people find it easier to start with the belt underneath, some think it's easier to put the nettle under afterwards.
A couple of times I forgot to put the belt down first and it was rather difficult to slide it underneath after I pleated the plaid.
Yes exactly! A kilt is not a bloody skirt
Who on earth called it a SKIRT!..ye Gods.
Oakleaf700 Scottish pride lad, Scottish pride.
An Englishman had a separate "skirt" from the rest of the fly plaid.
Where do you get the fabric?
I broght it on Ebay, it is a wool cotton blend. you can try local stores too, but it might be more expensive.
what kind of material did you use for your kilt?
a wool cotton blend. you can buy it online, just no Poly- blend.

you can go to any tartan seller order his clan colour's and make the kilt

Sorry it took forever to reply, I just now found this. I got it from a catalogue, you can try Ebay or By the sword. Look for a muslin peasant shirt.
@@YeomanLocksly wow, you remember after all this time! All is forgiven. Thank you!
is there a website where I can order fabric exactly like the kind you're using?

That's 1.5 x 3.5 m?
I believe so. Yards are close to meters so I don't think there is much of a difference.
you know he's doing it right when his pants are off
So I was going to tell you that the first time you pleated to the set. OK question I just bought 9 yards of tartan for my Great Kilt, you are saying I only need 5 yards?
clasicradiolover On second thought, try making deeper pleats with the 9 yards.
YeomanLocksly Why is that?

Do they just sell your clans weave pattern? I mean, I'm thinking that I have to order the tartan online. If someone could comment back to me that would be amazing! I'd like to buy the material and sew one for my boyfriend instead of ordering one. Thanks!
SOrry it took forever to reply, I live in TX too. You will have to find a book on Clan Tartan patterns and that will tell you which kind you need. I didn't really have anything in mind when I got this one. I just liked red with the bold black stripe.
kneel on the kilt and pull the pleat toward you.
ACTUALLY it was 9 yards long. The Great Highland Kilts were like a blanket, bedroll, overcoat, and rainshell all woven together.
How on earth do you pleat and wrap 8 yards of wool? Like I also say in the video 5 yards of wool is difficult enough. Maybe if it were a wool-poly blend you could do it comfortably.
Also it was a death shroud.
And the type of loose (pleat) ur doing is a knive pleat left or right you get box pleats and a mixture of the is a kingussie
I brought mine off Ebay, look under plaid wool. This is actually a wool cotton blend. I do Not recommend a wool poly, nylon or rayon blend.
The plaid has been far too long.. It was usually about 4 / 5 inches above the knee. This then made sure the bottom edge could not get wet and chafe the backs of the legs.
anything more than 6 yards is just over kill!!!
since doublewide woll is less than 100 years old , the amount of woll was doubled ,cut in half and bookmatched this was done to get the plaide useing the acient measuring system of I suspect the finished amount of wool was about 5 yards
eu não evolui e criei roupas térmicas pra andar por ai com um cobertor
are you drunk, guy? haha, take care of your dog! but funny.....really funny
I don't drink at all. I'm just not very good at cinematography. If you were sober and read the description you would see that the dog died about 2 yrs ago. Likewise I have since edited and re-posted a new version of this video.
This is 60" wide and 5 yds long. 45" wide will probably not work. It might take a few tries before you finally get it right.
To low below the knees
Yer kilt is too long. It never covers the knees.
make one from wood its easy
Answer the phone!
The Caller ID said "unknown" and I could not find the "mute" button.
Are you insane?!! What do you mean you certainly don't need 8 yards! You only need 5?! A kilt is not a kilt unless it is 8 yards! That is how it was traditionally in scotland.
The video would have been more enjoyable, if your dog was not yapping in the background.
audio needs work
why are you not wearing pants??!?!?! ew
One time I was wearing shorts under this kilt and an old woman told me to take them off (God rest her soul).
Because you're not supposed to?
Simply because a true Scotsman NEVER wears anything under the kilt.
@@Oakleaf700 a true acottsman wears whatever they bloody want and damn the devil
@@@whatstdiggn ..but no Scotsman I have ever known wears pants under the kilt...it is bollocko or wear trousers :)
This is a robe not a skirt
well no, its a kilt if you want to be picky
It looks like a skirt
