    Yep, that's the _Confiteor_ all right--what a treat to find a reactor who not only recognizes the Latin, but also the specific prayer it was taken from! Of course Frollo's claim that none of it was his fault stands in direct contradiction to the sentiment expressed in the prayer: "that I have sinned through my own fault, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do," and he's well aware of the fact and literally being haunted by it. I highly recommend you check out Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame, or if not the whole movie, at least the scene which included this song; it's a masterful piece of musical animation. (IIRC, the film includes at least one other lovely musical prayer sequence that takes place in the cathedral, too.)

    This song actually is the villain song from Walt Disney's "Hunchback of Notre Dame" 1996 cartoon movie... The main character is Minister Frollo, probably the most evil and heinous villain in Disney's history (at least in animation). He is the deacon of the Cathedral of Notre Dame, and he falls in love for Esmeralda, a beautiful Gypsy who doesn't cede to his lust. After she escapes from the Cathedral where Frollo was keeping her imprisoned, Frollo literally gets mad and "burns down all of Paris" until he gets Esmeralda and is on the verge of burning her on a pyre... Well, watch that movie if you haven't. Old school cartoons, yes, but a heck of a movie. 🙂
    Geoff didn't want to do this one. Frollo was too evil for him. And he tried to save as much humanity in him as he could... Until that scene with fire in his eyes.
    See you next time!

      Frollo isn't disturbing because he's more evil so much as because he's more similar to real-world villains, and thus somehow more relatable, despite being evil. He doesn't want to lure children away from home and turn them into donkeys just for laughs, or skin puppies just because children love them, or swallow children whole and digest them. He sees a beautiful girl and wants to "get to know her better", which is something people actually do in the real world. Also, he doesn't pursue his goals by casting magic spells or by magically transforming himself or his victims or by ensorceling the sultan or by employing trained guard crocodiles, but by abusing his position in society, misleading people, and exceeding the limits of his authority, which, again, are things real people actually do in the real world. Frollo is evil, yes; but he's not _more_ evil than other Disney villains. He's more _realistic_ than other Disney villains, and THAT is why he's disturbing.

    • @DavideBaroni
      @DavideBaroni 5 місяців тому +3

      @@jonadabtheunsightly All true, BUT. There's one more thing that makes him SO disturbing (to me, at least). He "sells" himself (even to... himself) as the GOOD guy, so virtuous, so MUCH MORE virtuous and pure than the "vulgar, licentious crowd", and he is so quick to blame someone else (Esmeralda, the Devil, God himself) for HIS faults. Also, while appealing to "purity and virtue", he doesn't hesitate to "burn down all of Paris" to satisfy his lust. The other villains, usually, are just that, villains. EVERYBODY knows they're evil. This guy is a narcissist AND a psychopath, and disguises himself as a virtuous "man of God". Yes, there are people like him in real life, and the fact that he is so relatable makes him even MORE disturbing because he's "realistic", yes. But these people disturb me in real life as well... 😅

    • @jonadabtheunsightly
      @jonadabtheunsightly 5 місяців тому +2

      @@DavideBaroni Again, blaming everyone else and considering himself righteous, just makes him more realistic. People do that all the time. Pretty much everyone you've ever met does that.
      Burning down all of Paris is, ok, yes, a little over the top. But he doesn't start out with that as a goal in cartoon-villain fashion. He's pushed to it because people keep *thwarting* him and refusing to let him have want he wants and, in his mind, deserves. And it is worth noting that there have been real-world villains who have committed mass arson (and blamed it on others) in pursuit of their goals. The most famous real-world example is probably Nero, who burned down a large chunk of Rome and blamed it on the Christians, because the stupid mean obstructionist senate wouldn't approve his perfectly reasonable plan to tear down the slums (making a lot of people homeless) and build nicer buildings, at great public expense, mostly for his personal aggrandizement. They basically *forced* him to resort to arson. What else was he going to do, give up on his radical renovation plan for the city?
      People who think American politics is the worst, haven't studied history. It gets *much* worse. Historically, *most* of the heads of state who have ever existed, have had members of their own immediate family killed in order to consolidate power.

    • @DavideBaroni
      @DavideBaroni 5 місяців тому +2

      @@jonadabtheunsightly Nero burning Rome is, according to the most recent research, just a myth. Which doesn't mean he was a good guy, but that seems to not have been one of his deeds 🙂.
      Anyway, yes, I know that such people exist. And everybody is somehow hypocritical, to some extent. It's a matter of quantity, if you want. Also, let's put Frollo in context. This is an ANIMATED movie, from before they became the best all age movies on the market 😁. The target audience was CHILDREN. Now, we can discuss for ages whether it's a "right" message for such audience... But put yourself in a child's shoes, and tell me how you feel about THIS villain.
      Yes, you're right. The fact that he's realistic and relatable amplifies his villainess. But doesn't MAKE it. People like Frollo, to such extent, sure exist. But they're pathologically evil. They have a whole chapter in DSM (and elsewhere...), and IMHO they're just the worst. If this is what you meant, that the fact that one can recognise Frollo-like persons all around her/him, is what makes him so deeply disturbing, then I agree. But it wouldn't be so if that kind of villainy wasn't so heinous. 🙂

    This is from the hunchback of Notre Dame, a Disney film. This brilliant arrangement is by VoicePlay’s beatboxer, who was ingenious enough to include the Catholic Latin liturgy references, even though he is Jewish.

    As has been mentioned, this is the villain's song from "Hunchback of Notre Dame". Not sure if it was written by a catholic, but it was certainly meant to evoke liturgy. One comment I've read even posted a great thought, that Mary really DID deliver Frollo from the temptation of Esmeralda by having her escape, for Frollo to then waste the deliverance by recapturing her to burn her at the stake. And while this was probably the darkest of all Disney animations and musicals, it pales in comparison to the actual book. I love animation and this is one Disney movie I refused to go see when it came out simply because I found the book so terribly depressing when I had read it. I STILL have not watched this movie, although I did google the video of this part of the film to watch.

      It did have a very dark theme in Frollo and this song. But the overall from Frollo is that he absolutely cannot be held accountable for hisself and always blames Esmerelda and Quasimodo. Hence why he wants to burn down the city so he can blame her for him having a physical interest in her

    The song was written by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz. No idea what religion either of them might be. But since the character in The Hunchback of Notre Dame who is singing the song is a high official in the Catholic Church in late 15th century France, it just makes sense that there might be some Catholic references in the song - it would actually be a lot more surprising if there weren't any such references.

    Coffee IS breakfast sometimes, haha!
    "Hunchback of Notre Dame" is a Disney animated film. Although Disney drastically toned down the original book's Catholic elements so as to not offend anyone, "Hellfire" was still controversial... WITH BAPTISTS! Hahaha! I dunno, Baptists were feeling cranky in the 90s and boycotting lots of stuff. I kinda understand, though. Minister Frollo is often deemed the most evil Disney villain because he's so REAL, a man who uses his position and power to try to force a woman to be his. It's that "real world evil" that makes him so heinous. He isn't an over-the-top villain or nobility seeking power, he isn't resorting to black magic or voodoo... he's so full of sin, he can't even recognize the darkness anymore.
    Composer Alan Menken (he's worked on everything from Little Mermaid to Frozen) was asked by the Disney Company to pick from a list which would be the next animated film, and he choose "Hunchback" so he could write a super dark villain's song, not a whimsical song sung by the villain like Beauty and the Beast's "Gaston", or a villain-exposition song like "Be Prepared", but something to show that the villain is totally evil... and that was "Hellfire." Alan Menken liked to use native lyrics when he could, like the opening song for Lion King ("Circle of Life"). Here, he drew upon traditional Catholic hymns and recitations to show a juxtaposition between what a real Catholic SHOULD be like, with the Latin voices singing at Frollo to coax him away from temptation, and how this man who claims to be so faithful falls into sin anyway.
    (Can you believe I managed to use the word "juxtaposition" in a UA-cam comment?)
    When Frollo's voice actor couldn't sing the final high note and asked for the song to be transposed down, Menken refused to change a single thing with his masterpiece, a song many in the Disney Company called "the reason Hunchback exists," and so he sent the actor to voice classes until he could hit the note.
    And here, Geoff sings the high note, then takes it up HIGHER, only to bring it back down into the dungeon.

    It took us on the Patreon about 2 years to finally get Layne to do this. We are still hoping to get Geoff to do Gaston's Song from Beauty & the Beast, but he really does not enjoy villians who are straight bad.
    Yes, both in the movie and here, the main song is overlaid the traditional call to mass (in the movie it literally fads from one to the other) and it is particularly effective because at the same time Frollo is singing about it not being his fault, the choir behind him is echoing the part where we admit that it is ONLY our fault, not something we can pass off to anyone else.
    And I love seeing new reactions to that absolute airstrike from Geoff the last three lines... up, and everyone who knows him expecting the drop... but instead he goes higher... and then in a half a line he drops more octaves than most of us can sing at all.

    I once attended a master class with John Rutter. When asked why he wrote so many pieces with Latin text, he said that although it was technically a dead language that no culture used as a primary language, it was one that almost all musicians had some familiarity. Almost all singers could pronounce the words and most had some understanding of the text.

    The book was written in 1831 (by Victor Hugo) but was set in an even earlier time, hence the witch burning and torture references to the Inquisition. So of course Latin phrases and Catholic themes are basic to the story, and in this song. Btw, it's "no-ter-dame" for the US university but "no-treh-dahm" for the Paris cathedral.

    Dunno about the song; but the _book_ on which the story is based, was written by Victor Hugo, the same guy who also wrote Les Mis. I don't know how religious he was personally, but France still treated Catholicism as an official state religion at the time, so he would certainly have been familiar with it. However, the inclusion of Roman Catholic liturgical phrases in the song may be more a reflection of the villain character Frollo, who is an official in the Catholic church in Paris, and the point of view character for this song. Substantial parts of the story, including the scene wherein this song is sung, take place in the Cathedral, Notre Dame de Paris, which is about as Catholic as a setting can get without being in Rome.
    Notre Dame, the school in Indiana known mostly for football, is pronounced /NOTE-urr DAME/. The cathedral in Paris is /note-ruh DOMM/. And yes, both were named by Roman Catholics, after Mary, mother of Jesus. There are also a whole bunch of other things and places all over the world named "Notre Dame" for similar reasons, including dozens of cathedrals and colleges and towns, but these are the two most famous by a wide margin.

    As for the composers of the original song: I think they both come from Jewish families, but as the person singing /narrating the song is a high rank catholic priest, I think it makes sense to include part of the catholic liturgy in the song to illustrate that. :)

But it made me wonder what they'd do with Phantom of The Opera, and make me pray they never get their hands on it! Just the thought is cringe-inducing. Oh, and side note, an earlier version of Voiceplay, with former baritone Tony Wakim, and former high tenor Earl Jenkins, does a cover of the title song from Phantom.
