This is by far the best review for this model on UA-cam. Thanks for being up to the point, compressing a lot of essential information in just 5 minutes!
Do it. I just bought the SQ-B with the 80mm f/2.8 PS and 50mm f/3.5 PS lens. I've only put two rolls through it, but I like carrying this kit and love shooting it. Much fun. Check EBay's listings from Japan. Ribs is correct, the prices have escalated in the past few months. I got the kit consisting of the body, the 80mm, a waist level view and a 220 6x4.5 film back for $850US, I know I over paid. But the camera is in beautiful condition, MINT. I will develop the two rolls this weekend using CineStill chemistry DF96 for the B&W and their Cs41 powder kit. Back in the 90s I shot hundreds of weddings with this camera, I never had a mechanical or electrical problem with it. However unfortunately I sold everything in early 2000s. Now I’ve caught the bug and purchased it all again and am back shooting, Luv it. By the way your video was great man enjoyed it a lot.
I'm using the ETR system with an ETR-C, 150mm f/3.5 and the 75mm kit lens and I've found an overall lack of content covering this system! I appreciate the video Some things I've learned: -The speed grip is super worth it, still nice and compact -eBay has dirt cheap batteries for it -AE-ii finder is pretty handy but you'll always want the AE-iii -The ETR-C doesn't have interchangeable backs, but I've 3D printed some 120 to 135 spool adaptors which seem to work
Thanks for sharing! Yea there can be some meaningful differences between the different versions. I may invest in the more expensive finder since I find myself wanting the auto-exposure. 💪🏽
Thanks for the intro and review! Own and still shooting my Canon Elan II 35mm film camera. I’ve just picked up one Bronica ETRS 75mm EII F2.8 from eBay Japan. Can’t wait!!
I have mostly shot MF with a Pentax 67 for its larger format. Even though there can be a lot of crossover if I were to adopt a Pentax 645 camera, were I to acquire a 645 system, I would definitely go for the Bronica ETRSi, for its diverse collection of accessories and its modular capacity, something the Pentax 645 sorely lacks.
Dope review! I have an ETR with a speed grip and just love that thing. So far it’s been the perfect medium format camera for me. Sometimes all those bigger names tempt me (Hasselblad, Mamiya, Rollie etc.) but this thing is underrated and over performs. May look into a GS1 next!
Yes, I have just got an etrsi version, it has M-up as well, but the great and probbably least talked about feature is that the winder grip has a hot shoe, to mount a flash directly, NO other pc-cords needed, however you can add one to use with a radio trigger, or even a TTL (off the film plane OTF) metering for flash, with the Metz 45-CL-4, etc hammerhead flash with an adaptor box (plugs into the trailer plug socket on the left side); This is for NON ttl flashes, so NOT the Cannon/Nikon speedlights, I mean this uses the National, etc basic flashguns (they have the coloured scale sliders, NO digital lcd display!); like those used on 35 mm film slr's eg: the one used on the Nikon F2/F3 cameras.
I bought a Bronica ETRSi some years ago and it is a big all manual slow to use wonder of a thing. Any awkwardness just vanishes when i look through the viewfinder and it says back to me ......"Hi big boy". I have recently bought a new eye level viewfinder with light meter and i am looking fwd to getting that and using it. It is not a camera for 'happy snaps' and I use it just for serious shots and I use only B&W film. I am moving toward getting my dark room running and see what i can produce. I would like to see a review of the viewfinder withlight meter. Great review many thanks.
yea the ETR system is awesome. the waist-level viewfinder is epic but it simply isn't for me. a viewfinder with metering is a great move - i may do that eventually
we had these in the Air Force along with the Nikon F3. i sold cameras before enlisting and always thought the SQ-A was a better build. when i was in the service, i used the ETR-S a few times and we shot our official portraits on it. i was always a Canon guy so i never used their Nikons but my own F-1Ns... nice review
yeah the ETR rocks! Ive got an ETRSi with the mirror lockup function. Also got the wlf and the metered prism, but never use the metered prism. I built a small lightmeter for it with only covers times and aperture values possible on the etrsi. Its on my channel :)
@@ribsy mine had the AE prism and i wasnt happy with it so i bought the wlf haha. It just made it too bulky with the finder and i wanted it to be as small as possible

Should have a look into the GS-1... its essentially the same price but its a 6x7 thats just a bit bigger than the ETRS, but much smaller and lighter than the RB & RZ.
@@ribsy yeah the Bronica is a solid little work horse, currently run it with 75mm and 150mm. But going to sell it on and get a GS-1 as its mad they're the same price. but if you're just flat bed scanning then the 6x4.5 to 6x7 difference isn't really a thing.
I have the ETRC since it's a little cheaper due to it not having an interchangeable film back. Haven't shot with it yet, but I love how it feels in the hands
@@donaldcrawford5577 After having used the ETRC for a year now, I actually really enjoy it. Just scooped one of these on ebay for $175. Comes with the 75mm, AE ii view finder, film back and two rolls of Ektar. The body has some issues...but for $60 I can get a new body that should work fine. That's what makes these modular cameras so good. I got into film again after my film camera broke on me. Was a St605 wanted to get back in and bought a XG-1 and am pretty happy with it. Shooting mostly black and white. Do you know if they have a L grip for this beauty? I looked at the Mamiya 645 but this option of shooting 35 and 120mm sounds compelling. Plus it's a Bronica
@@ribsy That'd be perfect. Got quite large hands so I might be fine with the viewfinder and without the grip. Will be looking into this beauty! Awesome vids by the way!
Found your channel through Reddit and subscribed, man. Love my ETRSI, definitely underappreciated. Considering picking up the 50mm lens for mine, how is it compared to the 75mm?
hey! thanks for watching. i love the 50mm lens - it really makes medium format shine since you get serious bokeh even on wide images. if you compare a 35 lens for a 35mm camera, and this 50 lens for the medium format, you will see similar compositions but the bokeh is unmatched. medium format wins. i really like mine and don't regret it. I am putting out a new video shortly using that lens. check it out!

Hello Ribsy i would like you to tell me wish film is compatible with the polaroid back. ? They talk about 665 668 and a lot more options but its that the 600 film box from polaroid?.
great cameras, but a couple of tips about some quirks they have, One: they are electric, with a 1/500th sec. mechanical override, if the battery or internal electics die, Two: the Metered prism has CONTROL over shutter speed when on A mode, so don't turn the dial and expect the speed to change! Three: the knob winds the BACK first, then the shutter, so on winder grip, you need TWO crank cycles, not one! (the return is NOT a return 'home', but a ratchet, a continuation of the wind_on); Four: from point three, to test the camera without a film in, use the double exposure lever, AND RETURN IT TO NORMAL afterwards!! ( this skirts around the winding interlocks to allow a shutter cocking cycle to occur); five/six: the meter is powered by the CAMERA battery, so when not in use, LOCK the shutter button, or fit the waist level, to conserve battery (like a dslr a half press arms the metering circuitry); the meter can be fooled by the dof preview button, or an eye off the eye-cup so press the ETRS logo on the lens side (it is a 'meter hold' function- 15-30 sec. to meter, recompose, shoot)- for the auto mode, as if it 'has a change of mind' the shutter speed changes instantly!! seven: if you hit the M_up switch by MISTAKE, DON'T return the switch!- it releases the shutter!, so read the manual for the specific actions to take, OR do the hasselblad way, darkslide in, back off, FIRE a shot, re-cock ( for Bronica's also do the double exposure switch to), then back returned, slide OUT.
hey! i actually haven't used either. I have only owned the ones that don't have any auto-metering. from what i've read, the aeii and aeiii work similarly to each other - thus, i'd go for the less expensive option.
I've seen the AE-iii but haven't shot with it, AE-ii gives you a nice display for which shutter speed you should use (though you have to be careful and only press the metering button with the aperture preview on the lens, which can be a bit of finger yoga with longer lenses) Edit: I should clarify this applies to my model, the ETR-C and I believe also the original ETR and ETRC
@@PeteNaish Unfortunately this is not the case for the ETR-C model, as far as I'm aware just the ETRS and ETRSi? I found a copy of the manual which explains this here www.cameramanuals.org/bronica/bronica_etr_ae-ii_finder_e.pdf It's also worth noting there are other modes on the finder which apply/don't apply the need to use aperture preview,, however they take up more battery and/or make you lose control over your shot (Auto mode) which I'd rather not do ;) I've found using the finder on Manual with aperture preview shows very consistently similar levels of exposure as my 1D Mark iv, so for the type of intentional, manual shooting I do this method works a treat!

Come a bit late in the video but I'm having some doubts about including this model in my collection or get into a phase one 645af or hasselblad h1, something that is triggering me is a want an hybrid something I can put a film back and a digital one, been trying to see if that's able with this model but can find info so is stepping me away for that reason a find a kit for about 400 the bronica, phase one just the body and back are 500 and the hassy full kit with 3 lens plus phase one p40+ back 2000 is a bit odd the different prices
The Blad feels more substantial in the hand ( shinier and heavier) But in all honesty there is no difference in results. And the Zenzanon lenses are 1/4 to 1/3 of the price of the Blad equivalent
@@ribsy it came with a speed grip, two prism viewfinders, waist level, three lenses (50mm, 75mm, and 150mm), two 120 backs, and macro bellows. I have lots of learning to do. Keep up the great videos man.
great review except if it breaks it's not really easy to get them fixed or cheap these days. there are only a few people left that are competent at repairing Bronica cameras. Historically we Bronica shooters have just bought a second body or lens if there were problems because they have been so cheap but like you said the prices are creeping up lately. luckily the ETRS/SQA/GS-1 are the most modern offering from Bronica and some of them were still being produced in the early 2000's so they still have a lot of life in them.
I've got the ETRSi version, great camera. Bronica are very underrated. I used to have a Mamiya 645 Pro but sold it as I preferred the Bronica. Nice review.
ETRS is a great system, the only dig I'll give them is the motor drive unit. Very heavy and clunky and prone to jamming. The manual winder grip is a much better option. The motor drive is the only part of the system I wish I'd never bought.

It’s no hassy but it’s legit
You my Bronica
haha what you mean?
The conversion from 645 to 35mm is .625.
yup!
The AE3 prism has spot metering.
yup 😊
I’ve shot with Bronica since early 80’s......used Blads and Mamiya.....you can’t beat the Etrsi.....
awesome! yea i've never use a blad so im really curious how it compares
The Blad feels more substantial in the hand ( shinier and heavier) But in all honesty there is no difference in results. And the Zenzanon lenses are 1/4 to 1/3 of the price of the Blad equivalent
Nice video, thank you.
Glad you liked it!
Just picked up an ETRSi from a colleague.
dopeee you'll enjoy it
@@ribsy it came with a speed grip, two prism viewfinders, waist level, three lenses (50mm, 75mm, and 150mm), two 120 backs, and macro bellows.
I have lots of learning to do. Keep up the great videos man.
super review !
Hope it was useful
Bronica is a best and intelligent camera. I prefer the square format... but for this camera there are Schneider Lenses at good price too.
Yea I wanna get the sq model
great review except if it breaks it's not really easy to get them fixed or cheap these days. there are only a few people left that are competent at repairing Bronica cameras.
Good point! I hope mine lives forever 😃
I've got the ETRSi version, great camera. Bronica are very underrated. I used to have a Mamiya 645 Pro but sold it as I preferred the Bronica. Nice review.
Thanks! Yea the Bronica is a champ. Such a joy to use. I also prefer the 6x4.5 - those extra few shots are worth it
ETRS is a great system, the only dig I'll give them is the motor drive unit. Very heavy and clunky and prone to jamming. The manual winder grip is a much better option. The motor drive is the only part of the system I wish I'd never bought.
yea! etrs is pretty awesome
Good review :)
Thanks for watching 😊
This or the mamiya m645?
This
@@ribsy found one for 320€ without the winding crank, is that a good deal?
I just got one with a 135W back for less than half of what it's worth right now
Word!
@@ribsy but...I just got a mint kit with a meter prism a 120 back and a 135W and 75mm lens for $1k 😎
Saving for one at this time can’t wait to get hold of it and enjoy it and shoot the crap out of it lol 😂
Haha hell yea!
You look like a American street fighter.
haha haven't heard that before 😊
Doing Film Things yeah. Kimbo Slice. Lol
