Casual day to day I use the uniform method- i order basic shirts from amazon and spend time looking through customer photos for anyone with a similar body shape to mine to see if the fit is how I like (I haven’t had to return anything yet thanks to this). Anytime I need to replace one or find I need to add another piece to my cycle for whatever reason- I can just go back and select a new color of whichever shirt I’m grabbing for more often, so all my casual stuff just keeps gradually improving more and more. I shop a lot less this way and if I do- it’s for pieces I know I’ll love for years and can wear in more social outings when I don’t want to look ‘ultra-mom’. It’s also nice having a color pallet for the nicer pieces. It’s easier to mix and match this way and I know I’ll wear it more because I have pieces already that will work with each other. I don’t have to go buy more clothes just to match with some random red cardigan I thought was cute.
I already sort of wear a 'work uniform' (jeans, boots, polo shirt or long-sleeve polo and fleece), because I work in the field as an environmental scientist. It's comfortable and safe for the conditions, but also easier to grab (as you said). It's just that on non-work days, I'd rather wear something else. So that's something dressier or even more casual (sweats, etc.). I generally consider myself a minimalist, so I don't have a ton of clothes either.
I was so glad to hear this message today. I used to be the girl who bought every scent at Bath and Body works, every candle which smelled yummy, and loads of seasonal decor throughout the year. It got to the point that I had more bath and body products than I could use, more candles than I could burn, and more decor than I had room to store. I recently gave most of this stuff to friends and family and haven't looked back. I can appreciate the fall hauls on you tube right now, but I feel no pressure to go out and buy a bunch of things that I'll just have to find places to store. Does anyone else feel this way?
Same here! I bought every seasonal candle, loation, scent. It just got to be too much. I threw them out. I dont decorate anymore. Just the Christmas tree for the kid and that's it.
Right here with you. But I still have a lot stored that I don't use anymore and have not cleared out. I think it has something to do with whether or not you have young children. Mine are now grown and I don't love decorating now.
I completely understand. It’s like you buy more than you can actually keep up with. I don’t buy seasonal decorative items anymore because I ask myself, are you really going to store all this for 10-11 months? Is it worth the clutter and stress? Nope.
Excellent tips. I really downsized my wardrobe by having a uniform. I shake things up with scarfs and jewelry but tend to wear the same type of outfits. I also buy higher quality pieces that last longer. The last thing I did was stop buying patterns. I find that solid colors tend to mix and match easier. My scarfs have patterns but almost all of my core pieces are solids.
I love wearing a uniform to work. I am in the medical field so I wear a scrub uniform Monday through Friday. It makes getting ready in the morning so much faster. And I would absolutely rent clothes. Especially if it is a fancy dress for a event, etc. I don’t want to waste money on buying clothes that I will only wear once or twice and then be done with it.
Emmadoo1975 genuine question for you! I live in the states and am originally from Europe. I see people in the states traveling already in their nursing uniform, scrubs whatever the proper name is. Is that not un-hygienic ? I imagine the intention of those are to be sterile but if you are wearing those out they arrive contaminated... always wondered about that...
@@klimtkahlo it doesn't necessarily need to be sterile. If I'm going into a room which needs to be sterile I'm going to be wearing a sterile gown, gloves and mask before entering that room and removing it immediately after.
My scrubs collection got to be overwhelming, I collected so many cute prints, and different colors. I realized finally that the purpose of a "uniform" had been defeated, and I found myself having difficulty deciding what to wear to work! I now work for a company that has one color, inscribed with their logo. I'm not wild about the color, but I'm happy deep down inside that I no longer have to decide what to wear. I'm going to donate all my old scrubs.
Scrubs have pretty much become the uniform of nursing, replacing the all white uniform. I don't know if there are still some specialized units that require you to change into provided scrubs at the beginning of your shift. The main concern should be, what are you taking home with you?
My husband and I are trying to put these things into action in our house. We are tackling debt right now and it feels amazing. Plus, we are slowly getting rid of everything that we do not need in our house. :)
I work two jobs, i have 5 shirts that are office appropriate and office pants to match. I also have 5 plain t shirts and 5 jeans for my night job. I have 2 pair of quality flats for the office and two pair of quality sneakers for the night time job. I run a home health agency by day and do night time stock for Michaels. This clothing separation works wonders. Honestly, I've your videos where you to home shows. It seems that you have a uniform for that part of your work. Thumbs up on your amazingness!🤗🤗
I’m so with “uniforms” - while working I had office wear, Sunday morning wear, as well as youth / children’s ministries wear - when I had me time I had “beyond casual wear” - am almost retired with limited income and physical disabilities so “uniform” dressing is more important now than ever before - I’m even to the point of looking for a seamstress / tailor who will create a couple patterns to fit my messed up body - in the meantime - I know what works (and looks good on me) so don’t even look at clothes that don’t have x, y or z -when I know what works and stick with it - I really do save money and have an uncluttered closet in which everything fits and works for me - if it doesn’t work it’s gone no matter how much I loved it - Thnx for this Melissa - lots of great inspiring information 😁🤗
I'm already quite the uniform person. My tea is athleisure. I love the idea of clothing rental. Such a hassle free management of the wardrobe. Thanks for a great video Mel xo
Great tips. I’ve recently realized that I do have a uniform. I teach preschool so I don’t want to spend a lot on clothes that will be covered in paint, play dough etc. most days I wear jeans and Target v neck T-shirts. I have them in every color.
Rebecca Stewart I teach a 10:1 autistic pre-k class and all things children are washable now a days. While I COULD wear “jeans and target clothes” to work, I esteem too highly to wear jeans at my profession. I wash my clothes and never had a stain last. Ever and its been 13 years. You know play dough doesn’t stain and neither does paint. Xo
I was just at Costco and went in for two items. Amazingly I only got two items. But as I was standing in line to pay, I was amazed at those around me with carts full of impulse buys...who needs jumbo sized chips, large quantities of snack foods and garbage snack stuff. I almost didn't renew my membership this year as I only visit Costco very really. I am now a minimalist shopper and love it. I hate wasting food. I often buy marked down items as well and save so much money. Thanks for your video. I couldn't agree more.
This is perfect timing because ive been into minimalism for the past couple of months and it has really opened my eyes how much I used to buy. Thanks for sharing 😊😊
I love your channel! I’m slowly starting my minimalist lifestyle... I’ve started by putting items in a container everyday that I don’t use, then at the end of the month if I haven’t used or reached for it , then I will be donating or selling them....I like the uniform concept
I cannot even start to say how much of a help you have been! I have been following you for a little over a yr. Right before your pregnancy actually. I watch your decluttering closet video. I got rid of so many clothes that I had from early 20's. I was hoping one day I could fit into them. It was a challenge, especially for the hubby cause he had the hardiest time giving up his old expensive clubbing clothing. I simplify everything now. My husband is still in the works. He has a problem in collecting papers and receipts. I got a Google wallet and it keeps details of how much I waste. I now take pictures of receipts and throw the receipts out at the moment. Or if there is an option I usually have it emailed. I have decided to buy my own "uniform set". 1 pair is a pair of sweet pants and over size t shirt. I only have one pair of Jean's that rarely I wear Jean's anymore. And 3 business casual shirts and pair of dressing pants. THATS IT! It was the biggest relief. I got rid of dress clothes for partys. Can you please give us a link where we can rent dresses?
I like the idea of a uniform but in the form of a capsule wardrobe. I like this because you have a handful of each article (pants, tops, jackets, shoes etc) and you know everything "goes together" so it makes making outfits super easy and versatile.
Prior soldier found dressing each day was a hassle. So, yes, I had my daily outfits. Theses were not “uniforms,” but I did have Mon, Tues, etc outfits. Love your posts. Congrats on new home.
I have been doing this “uniform” thing for years my family always have I have a different set of clothes for work, shopping, going out to dinner ect, gardening/paint or home maintenance, and exercise and I lay them out in the morning so as I need to change during the day their all there ready so it’s quick ( I always wear tidy clothes out so if I’m painting and have to pop out get something I just make a quick change and go) it makes life easier and I circumstances when I have double up for the same clothes but use them for different things I just pop a little label on them so my “good” clothes stay nice I also cycle my clothes down the line so “good” clothes that get worn, become workout get or gardening/painting clothes then from there they become rags, gardening ties, or knotted dog toys.
"Uniform" dressing is the thing for me. I never felt able to put together "outfits", and I always felt schlubby in whatever I wore, but having just a few nice monotone pieces has really made my life simpler and made me feel pulled together. Thanks for your great videos!
Thanks for the video Melissa! I don't have a uniform but I do have a system. I have only little amount of clothes that all fit together and I rotate them in hangers by putting them in the back when they come out of the laundry and using what's in the front. Never having to think about what to wear and if there's something don't fit or I don't like anymore, I just simply declutter as it comes in front. That way I don't get bored and have to buy something I don't need. And the real need to buy clothes... A simple new top or jeans just seems to multiply my clothes instantly.
You’re almost at 1 million subs! Whoo ! That’s great! Your channel really helped me get my little oilfield room cleaned up for my tiny UA-cam channel. Thanks!
I love having a uniform. I'm a nurse, so when I worked in a facility that required me to wear a uniform I was happy about that. When I work in a place where it's "business casual" it's such an annoyance having to figure out what to wear all the time. So I made a "uniform" I have a pair of comfortable yet office friendly shoes, 2-3 pairs of black pants and 5 tops, 1 dark wash jeans for casual Friday and that is what I wear every single week. I have a couple of occasional tops if I ever feel bored or there's a special event, I wear those. Sometimes I miss the days I was a student. my uniform used to be dark blue jeans, a black v-neck t-shirt, and a zip-up hoodie and running shoes. I had a couple other colored t-shirts in my closet on days I was bored with the black. I think for women especially wearing the exact same thing every day won't work but having a capsule wardrobe really helps! I don't like the renting outfits idea, because I'm plus size and dress very simply/don't attend many events, finding something I like and that fits is a pain. So having to do that will be more of a time-consuming inconvenience. If I was someone who was slim and needs to attend formal events, I would be renting all those evening dresses, not buying them...because they are expensive and most only get worn once.
I have done the uniform style for decades. Its so easy and convient. When I decluttered I discovered I am a collector of all kinds of things and was shocked at the extent of what I have. I organized it all and stayed away from stores for a long time until I used up most of my consumable stash and donated what I wasn't using. Thanks for your constant tips that help me keep on track ;)
I like the 'Uniform' concept. Since gallbladder surgery I went to a black pant with various color tops. Laundry's a breeze. For fun I change up my sandal or my shoe, add a jewelry piece or a sweater cover-up. It's simple & amazing, practical and a time-saver, also a real comfort. I feel ready for anything.
I love the whole uniform idea. It saves you money that you’re not wasting on fast fashion that might not even flatter/look good on you anyway. The uniform gives you character and will make you feel confident and ready for the day. For me, my “uniform” is yoga pants, a tank top, running shoes (jacket optional). I’m a student at university, so I’m always in class, or studying. Plus I like to maintain a healthy lifestyle as best as I can, so after class and studying, I can just head straight to the gym. Perfect “uniform” 👌🏼 Edit: plus, when you DO dress up for a special occasion, etc. you really stand out and it looks like you really out did yourself 👍🏼 (since everyone is used to seeing you wear your uniform on the daily)
I wear the same white T shirt and black jogging pants 7 days a week, so I fell into the uniform trend before it was even a thing. good luck with the move, Melissa, love you guys
I love this so much! I wear a white t-shirt and black leggings all day everyday while working from home as an organizer 😄 It's all about 1. #declutter 2. #getorganized 3. #simplify 😊 I love everything you shared especially near the end because organizing and finances sure go hand in hand. BTW, my running errands uniform is to throw a chambray shirt overtop and some tan leather sandals or black loafers to look a little more "dressed up" 😄
My sister rented a wedding gown, I loved it. My daughter and I bought consignment garments for her wedding, both brand new at 25% cost, I would have rented mine at least so it wouldn't still be in my closet 20 years later. I want to trim down. I find the older I get the more uniform like my clothing becomes. Denim bottoms, no print tops in basic colors and I'm retired. Daughter also rented both of her prom gowns.
I love this! I am fairly close to having a uniform and it does make my life so much easier. When I get up I just shower and put something on and I look good every day. Also, I love the idea of clothing rental. On the occasions that I would need to rent clothes, it just makes so much sense since those days are not a regular occurrence.
Oh I love the idea of the uniform! Every summer I pick up 3 dresses and 2 jumpsuits from Target and the entire summer that’s what you are gonna see me in. Parties, brunches, errands, everywhere. I hate to think about what I need to wear. A denim jacket ties the look every time. I am yet to find my winter uniform. But yes uniform all the way. Btw, molly ( I think that’s molly) jumping on your lap was so adorable!
Being self employed, my "uniform" is the classic t-shirt and jeans variations (with a selection of sweaters for Autumn and Winter) in various colours. I have black, dark and light blue jeans, a good mix of colours for my t-shirts (some stripy or patterned) and a good mix of colours and thickness of sweaters and I'm good to go. I like the idea of renting clothing for special occasions rather than spending loads to wear something just the once. Great tips as always. Thanks!
When I first had my first child I worked in the health care field & I always just wanted to slap on a pair of patterned clean scrubs on my days off when I had to go somewhere. My husband said no way I couldn't just wear only scrubs all the time. It was weird. But I said they should be called life uniforms b/c it's so easy not to have to worry a out what fits & what matches blablabla That was 11yrs ago. I guess I was ahead of my time!
Years ago we tried uniforms for work. We had a dressmaker come and measure everyone for a blazer, a straight skirt & a sleeveless dress type jumper. It was phenomenal, knowing what you would wear ahead of time. Now that I think of it a pair of trousers would have worked with it also. You had so many options & life in the mornings was so easy (I'm not a morning person) but best of all we looked so professional. My thoughts on rental anything? Go for it. I use my library a lot & when I finish the book back it goes & best of all I don't have to find room for it or dust it. If I got a book elsewhere, when it's finished I donate it to the library which holds a book sale once a year .
I like the 'uniform' idea. I've already practiced it for a while: I have a few pairs of my favorite jeans/capris in a cut that fits me well, is stylish and comfortable. I have a variety of cute tops to pair with them, and for daily life, it is SO much simpler. If I have an occasion or event, then I put an outfit together and spend more time on it.
Love the uniform idea and the clothes rental. I hate cleaning and do it as least as possible. I keep the house presentable by having only what we need. I have certain things to do on a daily, weekly and "season-ly" (if that's even a word) This way of cleaning is life changing .
I just realized that I have a uniform (T shirt and shorts) all year round. I live in a tropical climate and I like to think of myself as a beach bum. Renting is the way to go; I was invited to a wedding which requited a tuxedo; the renting was the best thing; I don't have to worry about anything, begging from the finding the right size ending with socks and shoes. By the way, I love the way you move your hands while you're talking.
Since I got married I've been so busy that I ended up adopting the uniform concept without even realizing it. I started buying long cotton casual dresses and ended up with nine of them. Exact same style but different colors and patterns. I wear them with simple white sneakers and white Bobby Sox. I get compliments on them from strangers. They are very pretty and incredibly comfortable. Now I never have to wonder what I'm going to wear or if it will look halfway decent on me. It has simplified my life immensely.
love the uniform idea, I am totally going to adopt this! Rental of just about all the short term or 1 time items is the way to go. I think of this as living simply, not just minimally.
When you brought up the uniform, at first I thought you were going to say that in order to get onto the cleaning or decluttering mode, a uniform can help one get into that mode... but that made me think... it could work to set that mood since a lot of us have a sort of uniform to wear to work.
ALWAYS had a capsule wardrobe and have been wearing the same classic clothing for years... Just different colors and I change it up with accessories... that makes it fun AND easy.... clothing rental is AMAZING and I would say for EVERYONE to at least try it...Well done vid
Melissa, since I read the two fabulous books of marrie Kondo, I live according to what you are saying here: a better buyer, my kitchen panty contains ONLY what I need for the coming TWO weeks and more other good habits. I love these videos of minimalism and agree with each word ur saying! Xx naama
Thank you for the uniform tip! I have been trying to figure out how to go minimalist with my wardrobe and you just gave me the answer. I have a decently sized mix of things for all occasions but usually just wear jeans and tees (I'm a writer and a mom, no dating life, no professional appearances, so there's really no need to wear anything else). I think if I created a "uniform" tailored to my lifestyle I'd be a lot happier - and have less anxiety - when I look in my closet.
I wore jeans with navy or black t-shirts every day for several years. It was great when I was running around after tiny beasts. I'm still doing that but my beasts are bigger so I'm beginning to add different tops and less frumpy jeans. Still based around black and navy for the most part because I enjoy those colors.
Great video and your presentation of the topic makes it easy for people to understand. I LOVE the idea of having a “uniform.” It makes shopping so much better and I love what I wear. I found in midlife I was returning to same things I liked over and over. My wardrobe now stays timeless and I love the things I have!
I need to change things up for my wardrobe, as I'm disabled and wearing the same thing, day after day, would be as depressing as some of my harder days are! I really like your videos, as they have helped me to put things into perspective! I'm definitely going to start a minimalist challenge, as I believe it will continue to help me realize whether or not I NEED items, or if I just WANT them because they are pretty to look at! Lol
Uniform: Yes! I am a pet sitter and dog walker, and I grab a pair of jeans and a company t-shirt (and fresh undergarments) 7 days a week. It makes life easy! Renting clothes: Yes! 26 years ago I rented my wedding dress. Something I would never wear again and would just sit in a box and yellow anyways.
Retired about two years ago and have finally realized I don’t need 90% of the career clothes that I have hanging in my closet. I also have a lot of casual clothes that I don’t wear. I’ve made it a goal to get rid of - give away - 50% of the clothes in my closet by the end of the year. I don’t have the stamina for a full-blown clean out where I take everything out and only put back what I want to keep so I’m doing it one rack, box, shelf at a time. I’m only half done but astounded at how many clothes I have that I haven’t worn in ages. I’m giving most of my clothes (gently used) to a local women’s shelter. I’ve already set a follow-up goal for next year - I’m going to go through everything that’s left in my closet and get down to a minimalist wardrobe. Uniforms - never called it a uniform but, yes, I guess it was! In the last few years while I was working, I started doing a uniform system - a specific outfit on a two week rotation- changing it up with scarves and accessories, but after awhile, I settled on the perfect accessories for each suit or outfit. Since I retired, I’ve done a uniform system too - jeans with a tee. I keep it fun by assigning a color to each day. Renting clothes - never done it but what a brilliant idea! Where do you find such a place?
Your Ego Rachel herself said that for her it was like playing dress up. Yes she wore to a party but the concept of choosing what to 'dress up in' was like playing dress up
I don't have a uniform per say but 95% of my wardrobe is dresses as I feel comfortable in them and they look professional. So I rarely have to think about what to wear, I can just grab a dress and a basic cardigan and I have some fancier cardigans that I can use for wearing the same outfit out in the evening.
I work at a nursing home so I have to wear scrubs and that is really easy, and when I am at home or going to town I usually wear the same items of clothing. I have been working on downsizing by getting rid of alot of my knick knacks that I have collected over the years, it is not easy but I'm trying my best to get rid of things I no longer need. Thanks for your video it really helped.
I love the uniform - I have one uniform for each area of my life (aka the different hats that I wear). Makes shopping so much easier. My closet is organized somewhat to reflect those uniforms which translates into the chance of getting ready quickly.
Love the idea of renting or borrowing for an event. The cost per wear is likely less than buying. No worries about weight gain or loss etc. I do wear a uniform to work but still aren’t monoton. I wear a dress, sandals or boots , add a belt and a bag and done. I only buy dresses that go with shoes and boots that I have. I order from eShakti so I control all the measurement plus neckline sleeve length and hem - I get exactly what I want fit exactly to my size
Love the rental idea for occasion wear. Love uniforms for school. For everyday life I would struggle with too strict a uniform concept but definitely onboard with having a uniform type concept involving 5 or 6 typical uniform styles in limited color palette. For example I tend to go for button downs and straight pants for work. Jeans and t- shirts for weekends. I like to wear blazer jeans with riding boots for winter wear. Wool pencil skirt riding boots and sweater for winter work wear so I sort of have a style uniform of sorts. I stick to neutrals peppered with seasonal colors that suit me. I do think uniform dressing makes life simpler.
Melissa, in the past year I have sort of adopted a uniform. It consists of black pants (the style and fiber content depend on what I will be doing) and a knit shirt. Now, being in love with color those shirts are different colors, but when you look in my closet you mostly see blue and aqua. Same thing on purpose with the shirts. I really don't know how that happened, but I am happy with it. As for renting clothing, I think it is a grand idea for normal size people. Not so much for anyone out of the norm. I found this video informative and inspiring. Thanks.
Thanks! You made me realize that I have unconsciously created a "uniform" of outfits that suit my life style and body type. What I haven't done is get rid of the clothes and shoes that I don't feel good and comfortable in. That is going to start right now.
I learned about uniform dressing last year and I haven’t looked back. My wardrobe is black and white. Usually black on the bottom and black or white on top. I always look nice, get a lot of compliments and never stress about what to wear or if something goes with something else. I do, however, agree that quality and simplicity is key.
A personal uniform makes so much sense! I can't believe I didn't think about it while at the same time also kind of doing it with my internet bought t-shirts and my cheap walmart pants. I guess I should improve upon my every day outfits if I want to make it easier to just put a shirt and some pants in the morning without looking like a crazy person.
Yes, I can wear the same uniform everyday to work. I recently met someone who did that and I was considering doing it myself. Now that I see this I just need to find what I like and I will for sure do it.
Yup, I have 3 large drawers of clothes and I've noticed I go for the same 5-6 shirts and shorts over and over LOL.. so I purged everything else. Another thing I've noticed is that now that I'm 35 I really know what I like and need. In my 20's I never really knew about quality and how cool cotton was and how awfully hot polyester was.. hahaha. Also after pregnancy shorts with pockets is a BIG thing now. I find myself carrying a baby, cell phone, bottles, toys, and pockets are just a must to simplify your life.
After a long time working, I semi retired last year. I have worn (and still wear when I do relief work) a uniform and scrubs for my entire work life. I found myself quite lost with regards to my style, so engaged the use of a stylist to help find my mojo. After a wardrobe edit and shopping trip to find some key pieces, she set me loose to shop for myself and then came back to review with me. It turns out the pieces that I had bought where similar to the things I had bought with her and it turns out I have subconsciously developed my own “non work” uniform. Solid colours for the top and mild patterns for the bottom. They have ended up all being able to mix and match and I accessorise with bold necklaces (as I can’t stand scarves) so I have umpteen variations from 10 - 12 pieces of clothing which can be dressed up or down as required. My wardrobe is only 3/4 full and I rarely have trouble deciding what to wear for the everyday. It has been so helpful for me, I highly recommend it.
I've definitely embraced the "uniform". Mine is knee-length dresses. Always business appropriate, comfortable; plain in summer, add a cardigan and tights in the winter.
Great video with great information! As far as a uniform for me personally, I guess I kind of already have that - especially in the warm months. I wear tank tops (or t-shirts) and shorts. In the cooler months I like to wear a variety of styles. I think just renting an outfit for special occasions is an excellent idea! Men already do that by renting tuxedos for proms, weddings, etc., because most men do not own a tux. I love your cat, by the way! What a beauty!
A couple things. I have found meal planning is great way to waste less. It helps save money too since your aren't running to the store for that one ingredient and then grabbing other things too. I don't know if I would do a uniform but I really like the capsule wardrobe concept.
Yes, yes, Yes! I totally recommend and love the feeling of always having something to wear or that it fits me and my needs for work or play. I totally feel blessed and NOT stressed and use conscious shopping using these skills from Dressing Your Truth. Minimalist doesn't mean black and white (unless you are a type 4) and rotating around that.
I sort of do have a uniform for work, although I probably never thought of it like that, and for all the reasons you mentioned. I wear slim pants and jumpers during winter and slim pants and pretty blouses in the summer. Makes it so much easier to get dressed in the mornings. I am also not averse to the idea of renting outfits for special occasions, makes perfect sense if you haven't made a career out of being a wedding guest. Very informative video, Melissa! I live by minimalism and have been shopping so much less for the past three years or so. I don't even buy clothes anymore, just recycle what I have. I feel so much better for it and my chi is on point haha!
I love the idea of a uniform. Mine is a pair of jeans, T-shirt/blouse/cami, and a blazer/cardigan. Problem is my current employer only allows jeans on Fridays. I typically choose the same items but swap out the jeans for slacks. I have so much “stuff “ but do plan to start taking piece by piece and sell on a few sites to help pay off debt. If they don’t sell in 3-6 months then I’ll donate responsibly. Definitely working towards minimalism.
Well I’ve studied in a school that requires us to use uniforms and that was enough of uniforms for me in a lifetime, tbh. But I did used to enjoy not have to worry about what to wear and only pick accessories and stuff, so I did my own version of uniforms to wear to work: I have 7 blouses of different shapes and colors and 4 pants also different and shapes and material that goes with all the blouses. So I just pick which blouse or pants I want in that day and go! I have just to coats and footwear that suits the weather, most of them in the same colour, and the “different “ pieces in my wardrobe, in case I really want a change in the style. Works for me! And I love renting dresses! Also love to buy dresses for special occasions but I’ve rented dresses all my life.
I couldn't do a uniform. I'm not a super creative person; however, I creatively express myself through the outfits I wear and I really enjoy that. I was a home health nurse for a while and had to wear a uniform...I feel like it killed my soul and I'm so grateful to now have a nursing job, in an office environment, where I can dress up as myself :)
Not into a uniform (though I did grow up with one at school- so easy!!) But I love the small capsule wardrobe! Everything mixes and matches, very few items become a ton of outfits!
I do a variation of the uniform. I love the idea of getting dressed easily, but I also like variety, so I have a different uniform for each day of the week. My uniforms are basically just starting points so I don't have to think as much when I'm getting ready. For example: Monday: dress pants and a form fitting top, Tuesday: dress, Wednesday: jeans & a blouse etc.
The uniform idea is great. I also like to shop at thrift stores first before buying new clothing. Sometimes you can even find items with the store tags still attached, and spend much, much less than you would at a regular store. Plus clothing gets a longer life of use, which keeps them out of landfills for much longer. Really with clothing, if you don't love it, don't keep it. Donate it so someone else can enjoy it.
I was in the military and had uniforms everyday. It was nice not having to pick out a wardrobe for the week, but it sure was boring. Now, I'm retired and tend to stick with similar pieces. I love my jeans and I change my look with different style tops, blouses and sweaters. I still don't wear much jewelry. Most jewelry wasn't allowed, per regulations with the uniform. My problem is hanging on to clutter, but clothing not so much. 😄
Dark 3/4 length shirt and jeans in the fall. Tunics top and jeans or shorts in the summer. Done and done. Wearing a uniform has significantly lower my decision fatigue related stress.
Omg this year I rented a dress for the first time for my work holiday party!! It was THE BEST thing I’ve ever done! Instead of spending $100 or more on a mediocre dress that I’ll only wear once, I rented a gorgeous high-end dress from Rent The Runway for only $35! I got a ton of compliments, and this dress was beautiful!!! The best part is that I didn’t even have to clean it before sending it back! 😄 They do it for you!!
I think it's a good idea for people who get stressed out over picking out an outfit daily, I could do the uniform if I wanted but I don't really need to.. Love you Melissa, can't wait to see your new home 😁 😁 🤗
I sort of do the uniform thing in a way, but instead of wearing similar clothes everyday..I put together a number of outfits that I really like and that go well together, along with jewelry that works and I either take a photo of the outfit or write down what’s in it. This way I can just quickly “throw together” an outfit that always works. I do this for every season.
I have few clothes items and wear almost the same all year round. I simply use more layers in winter. It's interesting to me to see how much clothes can people acumulate. I have started buying clothes second hand because is more environmentally friendly. I don't rent fancy clothes because I have a couple dresses that I've had for 15 years. I haven't changed size so I just keep wearing them. If I would need something extra fancy or change sizes, I would definitely choose renting.
I'm downsizing my clothing a lot lately. Working on my goal to fit eventualy all of my clothes and shoes into 1 closet. What helped me out where inviting girlfriends over for clothing swap parties! Everybody brings their clothes they don't wear anymore to swap out. This way you get to enjoy the joy of someone else finding something usefull to them. And your closet gets smaller in the proces (My rule is what I bring to the party doesn't come back into my home. Left overs get donated) Ofcourse you have to restrain yourself not to take all of your girlfriends stuff😂 Fun thing is. Because we do this regularly, my wardrobe changes a lot. I don't get bored. Because it feels like you go on a shopping spree and have all new wardrobe😉
Uniform, gerat idea! Helped me a lot whennIndecided to incorporate.minimalism in my life to pay off.debts and have a more quality filled life... I think clothes has taken control of most peoples lives already! haha... btw, you are looking great Melissa, I've been a subscriber for more than three years I guess and I noticed having a child gives you a certain glow... love your vlogs and tips, helped me a lot!
For work I have a uniform that can mix and match year round. Pencil skirt or dress pants with blouse, and for fun a few dresses. I wear leggings under everything during winter and a cardigan. Summer no leggings, flats or sandals. On my off days it's Jean shorts or pants with a comfy solid t shirt. During winter I put on a fleece sweater or a long sleeve under.
COMMENT QUESTION: What are your thoughts on the "uniform" concept?
I would say YAY to rental outfits but NAY to uniforms. I love dressing! It reflects yr mood and brings so much joy
I rent my wedding dress
I already sort of wear a 'work uniform' (jeans, boots, polo shirt or long-sleeve polo and fleece), because I work in the field as an environmental scientist. It's comfortable and safe for the conditions, but also easier to grab (as you said). It's just that on non-work days, I'd rather wear something else. So that's something dressier or even more casual (sweats, etc.). I generally consider myself a minimalist, so I don't have a ton of clothes either.
Look up Jennifer Scott 10 idem wardrobe! It will change your life! I have cut down to ten items! It has been amazing!
Nope.
Yes!! Exactly!!!
This is me with the hand sanitizers. Do they expire? Because I have quite a few of them.
Great tip about the patterns!
Another reason I love scrubs: pockets galore.
I wore uniforms during elementary and middle school. I loved it! It was so easy to get ready in the morning! I definitely wear a "uniform" to my jobs.
You just reminded me I have to take my library books back. BRB!
I have been doing this “uniform” thing for years my family always have I have a different set of clothes for work, shopping, going out to dinner ect, gardening/paint or home maintenance, and exercise and I lay them out in the morning so as I need to change during the day their all there ready so it’s quick ( I always wear tidy clothes out so if I’m painting and have to pop out get something I just make a quick change and go) it makes life easier and I circumstances when I have double up for the same clothes but use them for different things I just pop a little label on them so my “good” clothes stay nice
I also cycle my clothes down the line so “good” clothes that get worn, become workout get or gardening/painting clothes then from there they become rags, gardening ties, or knotted dog toys.
Perfect “uniform” 👌🏼
Edit: plus, when you DO dress up for a special occasion, etc. you really stand out and it looks like you really out did yourself 👍🏼 (since everyone is used to seeing you wear your uniform on the daily)
Great video, you covered so much! I have been thinking about the uniform for awhile now, and I’d love to take the plunge. 🙌
I have certain things to do on a daily, weekly and "season-ly" (if that's even a word)
This way of cleaning is life changing .
I'm all in on the uniform idea. I wear one for work & I hate stressing over what to wear at other times. Something I can embrace for sure!
I started the uniform at the beginning of the year and give myself one “dress up” day if I want variety. It has made life easier, for sure!
When you brought up the uniform, at first I thought you were going to say that in order to get onto the cleaning or decluttering mode, a uniform can help one get into that mode... but that made me think... it could work to set that mood since a lot of us have a sort of uniform to wear to work.
Exactly how I feel about books, I only tend to keep books I’ll go back and reference - and that does include the Clean My Space book 😊
I apply the uniform style and love it. Great fitting pants and fav John Elliot crew neck shirt and I AM GOOD! Apply that a few days a week 👍
There's something very sad and "Mrs. Havisham" (I probably spelt that wrong) about a wedding dress in a box yellowing... 😂
I’m a minimalist and I think both of those ideas are wonderful. Jean from Arizona
Def love the clothing rental idea. Rachel Cruze talks about that in one of her vlogs how she rented ball gowns for 3 parties! Like playing dress up!
MommaIrwin it’s not really playing dress up, she wore the gowns to a party.
Great video! I definitely wear “the uniform’! It’s the easiest! Love your cat, so cute!
I’ve never thought 💭 of that uniform concept before and think it’s brilliant 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Dressing Your Truth by Carol Tuttle really helped me edit the clothing, accessories, everything.
YES
I love organization so I love watching your channel to get tips and motivation. Thanks for always posting helpful videos!
Yes, I like the idea about uniforms.... it's so much less worrying about unimportant things in life.
I have just five outfits that I wear a week. On have some special stuff for the weekend. That's it and it is great.
I look forward to seeing you Saturday mornings! Drinking my coffee! Getting ideas! Thank you!
i love your videos, thank you this is really helpful. I'll try this now
Omg this year I rented a dress for the first time for my work holiday party!!
My work clothes are practically a uniform. A few different styles and black pants and a small variety of blouses that have black in them.
Love lots of options. I wear a uniform in my second job. I never pick it to wear at my full time job.
Thank you for explaning minimalist so simply.
I re-read many, many of my books over several times.
New subscriber here. I have spent 3 Years daily cleaning out and getting out of debt. The more I do it, the more I want to do.
Left overs get donated)
Ofcourse you have to restrain yourself not to take all of your girlfriends stuff😂
Fun thing is. Because we do this regularly, my wardrobe changes a lot. I don't get bored. Because it feels like you go on a shopping spree and have all new wardrobe😉
I have a capsule wardrobe and a few “ uniform “ ideas and a few stand out pieces I love. I need to rent a dresses for events a couple times a year.
Yes, I love both ideas, renting and uniform idea. Wonderful tips. Your the lady....
