I must say that since I decluttered I leaned 2 things
It’s much easier to keep the house clean and therefore less stressful when guests come over as the house is always ready ( thanksgiving was only decor and food ) no additional cleaning
    2) I deal with things immediately or try to do weekly clean outs

The biggest tip as a mother of 4 children. It is always best to go through your children's things with them present, It helps them to let go and have freedom with the choices they make. Great Lrssons

Great video! I spent a chunk of my day off today cleaning up my messes in the garage, carport, and my vehicle. I've been getting limited hours this month and I want to take advantage of it, especially with these earlier winter sunsets.
    1. It's not my house (but fortunately it's family and not a landlord situation) and I shouldn't have had things messy in the first place 2. I kept having issues knowing where my tools are/missing sockets.
My goal is to have everything cleaned up, rebound from my hoarding habits, and have most of my tools all in my roll-around. I plan on living out of my car for a period of time, so I need to work on downsizing and making it to where it'll be easy as pie to load all my stuff up into my vehicle when the time comes.

I started decluttering yesterday, I have gotten rid of at least 7 garbage bags full of stuff and i am nowhere near done! I started in my daughters room and just ran thru the entire upstairs. I cant wait to start downstairs. It feels amazing and my house feels lighter!

  • @yvonnerahmes9618

You take the chaos/crazy out of the thought of decluttering, it is a relief rather than another boulder of stress/anxiety. Like a lot of things for me, breaking down a seemingly enormous endless job into small bite size time managed sessions makes it "do-able" rather than simply IMPOSSIBLE... My addition is that after you work, spend time being nice to yourself instead of getting that "it's not good enough" thinking if it isn't "all done." Thanks for the great suggestions of where to take your decluttered items! Happy Holidays to all!

This was actually a "calming" video, ie, since we just purged house (mostly not entirely) for grandchild, and we wont be having guests here at christmas, i found this a "done that" video...calming!

We do this with our daughter if she wants to use stickers or stamps we make cards and given to family and friends. Thank you, birthday, Christmas, miss you, thinking of you cards. It shows gratitude, thoughtfulness, an activity that keeps her busy but also gives others her handy work without being in the house.

Finally after benefitting all these years from your videos(and they get better every year), I have a tip for you. You toss your daughters crafts after she goes to bed, instead once a week have a make room for more event, maybe Saturday morning clear the refrigerator or display area and throw them away with her, this way she gets used to the fact that the fun is in the making not the keeping and when she is older you don't have to lie and say "Oh gee, I don't know where your drawing went.." Whatever you do now is what she will accept as normal in the future-like eating vegetables.

My mother got rid of some of my things when I was at school. That caused me distress. It felt so sneaky. I would rather have been involved in the deciding what needed to go. And yes, my mother lied when I asked where such & such was. That is not the way to go, believe me. So, Karla, I agree w/you !!

A friend of mine had a couple of totes for her kids toys and the toys that the kids didn't play with for a while got put in the totes and put in the back of closet. After about a month she will pull the tote back out and the kids thought they had brand new toys again since they hadn't seen them in a while. She would watch and see which toys the kids liked to play with and which ones they didn't. She would then put the toys that weren't played with in a box to donate or sell at a garage sale or take to a kid's reconsignment shop. She actually saved a lot of money on toys doing it this way and the kids had less clutter in their rooms when only half of the toys were out at a time, hope this helps some folks.
This also works with dog toys.

At either Thanksgiving or Christmas I always look forward to real mashed potatoes, stuffing, and green bean casserole. That trio has always been my favorite combo. And I have a small apt. and just finished downsizing and/or decluttering, and all that's left is all my papers, and then the storage unit. Already I'm happier and feeling lighter.

Awesome tips! My favorite holiday food is tourtiere. It is a French Canadian ground meat pie in a flaky crust. My family has always omitted the shredded potato or bread crumb filler and just used ground beef, pork and veal. We serve ours with home canned sweet chili sauce. I actually just ate a piece left from yesterday's feast.

I’m pretty proud, and excited, that I decluttered our office area upstairs over the weekend. It’s one of those spaces that is sort of a catch all, and I have been embarrassed for anyone to see it since my last child was born, so about a year. I feel so good about the space now and love being there. Now I want to tackle other areas of the house.

You are so right about these boxes to put things away in. I joyously found these red totes with green lids, and it perfectly lets me know what totes in my garage are Christmas gear. I don't have very much, but the lights, the way I store them to keep them from getting tangled does take a little space.

I love the Green Bean Casserole with the fried onions on top. I wonder why we only have that for holiday dinners because it is so good. Our family used to get our paternal side together on Christmas Eve and the main dish was always chili. I don't know when that started but it was always chili every year as long as I can remember and I'm 63.

To those gifting: think of experiences to gift instead of material things. Passes to a museum, classes, or a consumable like tea, coffee, chocolates, etc. fun and nothing to store.

Yes, but make sure you're not gifting an obligation of time and energy that would similarly be seen as a burden. A great bottle of wine you'll know a friend will enjoy may be a better gift that a ticket to a wine tasting.

When I started clearing my home clutter, I became so aware that in developed nations where abundance is common, that our society promotes frivolty and fanciness because it is all about consumerism and companies making profits, thus consumers are bombarded with ads everywhere thereby brainwashed into believing we need 'this, that, and the other'. I just donated alot of shoes to a thrift shop because all I really need are the basics--a good pair of hiking sneakers, winter boots, and a pair of light loafers. I wish I were more enlightened & practical about such matters when I was a youngster.

When our 3 kids were young, I was in our church choir. Call time on Christmas Eve was 7:00 pm. Our traditional dinner became: homemade Caesar salad, a mountain of peel and eat shrimp cocktail, crusty sourdough baguette and butter it was perfect. We all ate in our church clothes (for a quick scoot out of the house), so it was even more special. I had a timeline that actually worked. The kids, now in their mid-30’s, still want that. We have three grands too. We’ve moved the festivities to my daughter’s house because there is more room, and we all bring a segment of that dinner. Tradition!

Love your outlook, with kid toys though, I want to add that my son was hardcore about lightening McQueen. He got worn out from it for 6 months to a year (we saw it as over it) then he was hardcore and revamped about it again and I was glad I didn’t declutter that stuff like I wanted to. So I think if there’s anything they really loved might want to hang on longer than you’d like because they might come back to it lol And I feel that way about the hobbies I have that I do go back to the same things years later. I like your toy exchange deal for that. I am totally with you on junk toys

In the US, Goodwill accepts textile items that are no longer useful for their original purpose. Clothing, linens, etc are accepted and turned over to companies that recycle textiles. It's sold to the recyclers by the pound, which still provides some cash back to Goodwill's charity work, and it still keeps these things out of landfills.

For bathrooms when you're expecting several guests, a local spa has little basket of washcloths / small guest towels in a basket on the counter, and a basket on the floor to drop them in! Easy peasy individual towels! I was recently at the home of a friend who is much neater than me. She was just getting over a bug ... Her bathroom was nice and clean, but only one hand towel out, and it was damp!
We had several rods in our bathroom when I was growing up, and my mom always put out clean towels when someone was coming over, and our personal towels in the laundry.

4:00 you can also scan them to have on a thumb drive or use something like Plumprint if you can afford it. It's a nice way to keep the memories/visualization-of-artistic-progress without having to keep the actual items themselves 😊

My favourite Christmas food is the gravy that my brother makes. I spend Christmas Day on my own & my sister-in-law always brings me over a Christmas dinner on Boxing Day. My brother is a great cook.
With me, it’s not “Would you like some gravy with your meal”, it’s “Would like a meal with your gravy?” I like it swimming in it.😀
By the way, what exactly is a powder room? Is it like a loo?

I really appreciate your advise on how to manage holiday decor: a method we have in our home for decor is to have universal season decor: fall, spring, winter, summer! So like winter: I will have a lot of green, red, silver and gold decorations out. some of it is Christmasy(like santa and snowmen) but at the same time they're not all in your face to where i can keep them up Late Nov/Dec/January. And same with consecutive holidays thereafter... fall, some halloween, but mostly leaves, pumpkins, orange/beige/brown colors, nuts etc. Spring: flowers, pastel colors, eggs... summer: flipflops, suns, teal/amber/neon colors, sea shells. All items are so universal that your not going to insult someone with any specific decoration.

A year ago I think I would have said sugar cookies were my favorite holiday treat, but I removed cane sugar from my diet so I'll have to find a new favorite treat. I really like corn casserole, we usually have that with our Thanksgiving meal.

Donna S. L. I had/have the same situation...finally after 12 yrs I have a handful of things (literally a couple of things) I’m going through any old boxes and keeping the photos, the rest to donation or dump and I will continue to go through the pictures .....started by ditching pictures of people I didn’t know ...I still have a lot but it’s getting easier ... it’s hard and lengthy process but you’ll be great..hang in there

I really like your tips on kids! We have a 1 1/2 year old and it sounds like we are in the same boat. My question, how do you feel about saving items for subsequent children. We are having a baby boy and we saved all of our daughter's clothes we would use again but now that doesn't really apply. We don't know if we will ever have 3 kids but I don't want to save BOTH of their stuff but I also don't want to be wasteful (for environmental and financial reasons) and have to repurchase clothes down the road. We don't have much storage and we want to keep things minimal, should we donate it all and then just re-buy as needed?

    • @cheekykitten25
      @cheekykitten25 5 років тому

I did this and ended up having a baby boy so gave my baby girls stuff to other people. I knew I was done or else I’d have saved the very best pieces of each set of size. Things that are more memorable and sentimental. Hope that helps. Everything else you have u can give to others, put in the charity or make a quilt with the pieces. I’ve seen videos of this and it looks like a sweet idea.
