Best football game in history still. Best commentary, best gameplay, great music, super fun matches, player creation, etc. Just the most fun I've ever had with a football game.

I had this and after playing FIFA 98 so much I Really struggled to score goals, it always got saved. But the gameplay was miles ahead of FIFA, at the time I was blown away, I truly was.
My friends didn't like it tho because "it didn't have the proper licences" All football fans that should of appreciated it for it's realism.

Ryan is stuck in 93 Agree one of the best football game honestly my three or 4 fav football game in order 1. FIFA 12 that’s the last great great FIFA in my opinion the defending system and all my fav football game 2. ISS 98 what a game and when u compare this to the crap that whas FIFA road to World Cup its a world difference graphics and everything just unfortunate no liecense 3. Whas the old MLS game game whit Valderamma on the cover that game too I played it so much it whas a great great game and 4.Pes 6 that whas a great great game also but anyway i feel football game didn’t yet came whit the ultimate perfect game i feel pes and FIFA should join force and why not let’s even add football manager in it to come whit something incredible that would be epic for the next generation of consoles but that’s juste me dreaming it won’t happen

The Original Japanese version of the game titled Jikkyou World Soccer World Cup France 98 I think, actually had the 1998 FIFA World Cup license plus the FIFPro license in it.

ISS series on N64 are the BEST. WHY? 1: Always play with keeper on LEVEL 5; work for your goals! 2: Create own player, you can't copy memory card so UNIQUE TEAMS! 3: Formation and A.I. programmed to set how YOU want and do what YOU want. (not like modern PES & FIFA) You could place attackers at the corner flag if you wanted. You could place defenders next to the keeper and they would STAY.
4: Skill points for created players are awarded RANDOMLY. So if you had the time.... (it was exciting to build your army, I felt like Saruman lol)
5: CLICK-CLACK! All you had to do when visiting friends is bring your memory card and your ready. Team, formation, tactics...click-clack. (a bit more awkward on modern "hi-tech" consoles like PS3 &4, Xbox 360 & ONE) The memory cards of the N64 and PS2 were PERFECT.
5: I'll say it again, if you did not play this with the keeper on level 5....you did not know this game. And overal...the level of control over the team and A.I. made this feel very realistic. We had a lot of home tournaments. (put some money in the jar on the TV)
I only started liking PES from 2007 & 2008. But after that, Konami ruined PES again to earn money like EA. So ISS 98 and PES 2008 for me I guess. And I regret not having played ISS 2000 as much as I should.

arguably the best football game ever made. not sure if we all played it a lot because a lot of us were younger (i'm 33 now) but out of all football games this game took most of my time...esp multiplayer..there were so many learning curves that even today 2018, you could discover something else. There are so many good football games, SWOS 96/97 and Kick Off 2 on Amiga, PES 5 was also considered one of the best football games Konami ever made, and many can also argue that Winning Eleven 9 Liveware Evolution (was released in Korea 6 months after PES 5) had best offense/defense of all times... and also in mind comes PES 2013. But this ISS98 is a special , pound for pound champion of all of them. I just bought it on ebay in MINT condition along with N64 ...looking forward playing it as much as I did in my late teens.

I had both ISS 64 and Fifa 98, and both of them were quite enjoyable. ISS 64 was more about arcade and Fifa 98 more about simulation. So depending on was you were looking for, each game had its chance to fulfill you needs. Well, I talk about ISS 64 because according to me, ISS 98 was more an upgrade/patch than a really new game.

ISS 98 for me is the greatest football game of all time. ISS 2000 was more polished and realistic but was also a much slower game. 98 was frantic and whilst 2000 is a very good game, 98 is much more fun to play.
I miss football games like this - it took real skill to play the game well, the manual passing was superb - and the game punishes you if you rely on auto passes. Football games these days look great but rely on the auto pass: the computer basically does the work and because of this both FIFA and Pro Evo tend to fall into a generic Barca style of play. ISS 98 made you do the work yourself but in return allowed you to play whatever style of football you liked, and everyone had their own way of playing. Great contrast of styles with some people playing intricate passing, some dribbling at every opportunity, others pumping long balls and kicking lumps out of the opposition... probably the dirtiest football game of all time!
It has its flaws - it's far too easy to go round the goalkeeper and to retain the ball when dribbling. Injury time lasts almost as long as the half itself - it's not uncommon to score 3 goals in injury time at the end of the match - and a lot of goals are scrappy rebounds. None of that really matters though. The game engine is so good and it's so fast and so much fun, it all adds to the experience. I've never seen a game that has a similar effect on people emotionally, it's pretty much impossible not to get carried away playing it!

I was a fan of the ISS, and while i didn't own the ISS 98, i did own the Snes version (ISS deluxe) and after, the ISS 2000. But i did play ISS 98, as my cousin did bought it. It was fun, and we sometimes played games againts each other, but certainly 98 was less refined and some mechanics were different, so most of the time i loss agains him in 98 but easily beat him in 2000. Still both games were fantastic, specially fun, i think that was kept me playing ISS for so many years, i always felt it was much more fun than Fifa series, even considering the lacking of licenses. I know is not the same game, but in ISS 2000 the american version, which i owned, lacked the career mode, the semi role playing aspect of the game. I think it was the first football game with that mode. Nowdays is quite common, but also i think you only play as your character, do not train him, like it was in the european version of ISS 2000. It was a great video, thanks for sharing it with us, it does bring some memories back.

This series is the second best 3d football games of the 1990s. Only ISS Pro 98 on the PS1 can eclipse it. Still playable today. ISS Pro Evolution 1/2 are my favourite football games of that generation and arguably of all time. Konami know how to put together a footy game.

Love the game thanks for the review. Can anyone confirm that you can save the correct names to the teams if you use a memory card? I have heard that you can only change & save European player names etc. I am about to buy a memory card but dont want to waste money if the game won't let me save the correct player names.

Nah, it probably has to do with EA owning the rights to publish FIFA games. It's still evident today with the ISS (or PES) series.

I played ISS 64, but Fifa 98 (PC) afterwards.
Those are the only FOOTBALL games I've ever really played. I think football games lost their touch over the years and became pretty generic. But that might have to do with becoming realistic.

    • @n64glennplant
      @n64glennplant  9 років тому

This game is one of my favorite soccer games of all time (along with Winning Eleven 8 and 9). The Playstation version of ISS 98 is better, but I have more nostalgia for the N64 version. Oh, and FIFA 64 did suck.
