1:49 Correction: I've been informed that the RetroTINK 2X can also accept S-video input from N64, but I don't have any S-video cables on-hand to add that option to this comparison. Might eventually have to revisit the HD daisy chain down the road with more options! 😉 Cheers.

Kind of an unfair comparison, since most reviewers seem to agree that the the Retrotink with S-Video generates fairly similar results to the Eon (which is also more expensive and less versatile compared to the Retrotink). I'm also surprised you'd buy a Retrotink and not know to use the S-Video input, that seems like a huge oversight if you were interested enough to spend that much money to improve the image quality in the first place.

I wish we got a side-by-side of Slick Mode with and without the mClassic.
ALSO, IMO, the Slick Mode+mClassic combination works WONDERS for polygons and CERTAIN UI elements, but IMO for some text and textures, the smoothing algorithm might be a SMIDGE too aggressive and it can almost look like the edges were "smeared" rather than smoothed, giving an almost painted look. The best showing of this is the comparison highlight reel near the end of the video, the Nintendo copyright on the Zelda title screen, and all the text in the StarFox section.

"The Super 64 aims to provide the best possible image from an unmodified N64."
This is mostly true, but it's important to note that it has to rely on the S-Video output of the console, since that's the best (analog) signal that an unmodded N64 can provide.
If a stock N64 could output RGB, then that would definitely be the preferred analog connection of choice.
(and I'm not sure any of them do, even though most NTSC versions have an RGB-capable DAC that's not wired up to the AV port for some bizarre reason. I think all stock PAL N64s only output Composite and S-Video, with no RGB-capable DAC.)
So the Super 64 is essentially a converter from analog to digital, and not a true digital HDMI solution, like the UltraHDMI.
Sure, the UltraHDMI costs more in total if you have to hire an installer, but it offers a true pixel-perfect noise-free digital connection, VI Deblur, width / height / overscan options, "retro" mode" / scanlines, upscaling to 720p or 1080p, and many other options.
I have a strong hunch that the Super 64 is actually using the exact same chips as the RetroTink 2X, with the "Slick Mode" on the former being the same thing as the "Smoothing" option on the latter.
The RetroTink 2X only costs $99 in comparison, it does accept S-Video, Composite AND Component, and can be used with many other retro consoles / computers for 480p / 576p output via HDMI.
Don't get me wrong, I understand the convenience of "plug n play" solutions like the Super 64, but the price seems high for what it offers.
Even if you include a decent N64 S-Video cable with the RetroTink 2X, it still works out less, can be used with other machines, and offers a Component input (which can be used with the OG Xbox, PS2 etc.).

Most “reviews” of this product are blatant ads, the only actual review I’ve seen is Digital Foundry’s. Plus the Retrotink 5x makes composite video look better than this adapter due to its amazing composite comb filter.

    • @FreakinSweet1987
      @FreakinSweet1987 2 роки тому

@@fluffisaurus7090 The only reason you consider the Digital Foundry video more legitimate is because they had more criticisms than other videos. If you look at comparisons like John Hancock did, you'll see that the Super 64 is essentially the best middle ground between a lower end device and the HDMI mod in terms of both colors and picture quality. It does a better job at upscaling, and without input lag on top of it.
It's important to remember that Digital Foundry is constantly exposed to differing levels of video quality across dozens of platforms. It's natural they won't be impressed by something so standard. But the average consumer will likely be blown away by the difference.

Don't worry use SCART if you can use it there or even Standard Composite Cables.

Everybody has their own preference and there is no one "right" way. For my own preference, we have a 27 inch Trinitron and output the N64 to it with s-video. I much prefer that to any kind of modern display, adapter, or the like. These consoles and games were made with CRTs in mind and I really feel that older consoles always look their best on a CRT for that reason. Basically PS2, Gamecube, and older -> CRT with best input option available. Original Xbox and newer -> Upscaled, HDTV, emulator, etc. That's my preference.
That said the Perfect Dark footage at the end did legitimately impress, so for those who don't want to deal with a giant CRT or prefer this kind of look, I can definitely see it as an option. Too bad it's so expensive though!

You could buy a RetroTiNK 2x and a custom S-video cable, and you'd be getting just as good of a picture while saving at least $30. Not only can you use the RetroTiNK 2x with the N64 but you can also use it with other systems as well. The EON is still only using the S-video signal.

I think the reason the Super 64 is able to make the picture look so good is that it determines where the edges of the pixels are and makes each pixel space show the same colour, unlike the composite cables where each pixel has a bluring applied in between and also has colour artifacts.

And while it's still what I consider to be barely on par with an RGB mod, (not saying RGB for N64 is bad at all, it's just a lot less significant on the 64 compared to consoles before it) it actually doesn't look as bad here as it did in the trailer video. It actually looks more appealing, although I still feel like $149.99 is still kind of asking much.
