So I'm writing this from the perspective that you've already seen atleast the next two episodes so you already know... We obviously will remain supporters of Uhtred. But if we take off the fan filters and look Alfred's position. He is a king who is dying and his son is not yet ready to be king. He needs someone like Uhtred to be there to help. But because Alfred is part of a fragile christian nation, he can't appear weak to his counsel, or else they won't respect him or his son later. So he used the death of the priest as a way to make Uhtred serve Edward, that way it's official and no one can oppose it. Plus this would mean that his son would be protected. Alfred who has worked and fought all his life to protect Wessex and unite england... is dying, and his son, who he hopes will be a good king is not ready and will need protection... In the scene when you see him crying, those are tears of fear. Fear that he had lost his only hope of protecting his son and the land he fought so hard for... It's also Alfred's fault for trying to manipulate the situation. But when we consider that this is a dying man who is deeply concerned about the kingdom and loved ones he is going to leave behind... Alfred got desperate and it backfired in his face... And now he hurts because everything he's worked hard for is in danger of crumbling... I don't support Alfred, but I see where he comes from. I wish he would have been more understanding. But Alfred has always been stubborn. But so has Uhtred. They're both stubborn and prideful. Two sides of the same coin...

If he'd just put an actual effort into helping Uhtred reclaim his seat in Bebbanburg and treat him like a friend, Uhtred would happily be a vassal to him. If a king in medieval times actually treated his closest aides like this, he'd be out of commission in no time.
This is true, although equally if a king treated a pagan as well as his other vassals he may find plenty of his old vassals aren't as loyal to him.
