What's considered an impurity?
I am an engineering student and I can tell you that you are partially correct in that some of the cloudiness is impurity's however the main cause of it is misaligned grains in the ice. Like many other materials solid water needs to form a lattice because it is a polar molecule. When it starts freezing from any direction it wants to than the lattices in the different grains do not line up which causes the cracks and cloudiness. These are called grain boundaries in material science. The clear section is all one single grain because it started freezing at one point and all of the other molecules in the clear section lined up with that grain. If you can ensure that the block starts freezing in one point than you can make the block entirely clear. This is used in ice sculptures and sometimes in ice for fancy alcoholic beverages. A crude method of making single grain ice is by insulating all parts of the water you wish to freeze except for one point. And than put it in a refrigerator. You can Google "how to make clear ice for cocktails" for examples.
most metals also form multiple grains however metals can also form single grains when we force them too. Turbine blades in jet engines are an example of single grain metals.
as for why your block in particular has one cloudy side and one clear side is a little harder to answer without looking at exactly how you allow your ice to freeze. If I had to guess than I would say that you had the ice in a bowl shaped plastic container. The plastic would serve as isolation from the cold for the bottom and the sides while the first grain started to freeze somewhere on the surface. However the plastic container is not quite a good enough insulator because multiple other grains where able to form on the sides and bottom of the container latter than the first grain. Once these other grains met up with the original grain somewhere in the cloudy section than they where no longer able for form large grains but rather formed many smaller grains which is the cloudy section.
In order to give validity to all of the impurity's and air bubble comments, you are correct in the fact that impurities and air bubbles can also cause more grains to form, however you should be able to get perfectly clear ice with normal well water. This is because there is not that much gas dissolved in water. To be precise it is about 14 mg/L which should be enough to cause visible problems. Also the amount of air that can be dissolved in water is a function of temperature so as the temperature goes down so will the air content. This is because as the water gets colder the water also gets denser and the gas molecules are more buoyant in the water. Reasonable amounts of salts and impurities are not an issue because most salts are considerably larger molecules than water so if you can cause it to only freeze from one point at the top they will not be able to penetrate the lattice and they will be forced to the bottom of the container.
When you freeze ice the milky part is with air bubbles in it. The clear ice has no air bubbles. To get clear ice for carving, (is, swans at weddings) you have to vibrate the ice as it freezes. The vibration removes the air bubbles.

6:41 So to answer this one is actually really easy. The cloudy bit is where it started to freeze and the clear bit is where it continued freezing more orderly (so the cloudy bit was probably at the bottom of the tub the water was frozen in). The cloudy bit happens because it's not a perfectly organized structure so light doesn't pass through it as easily and scatters about; whereas the really clear bits are where the structure evens out letting light pass through as if it were glass. This is also why ice cubes become cloudy when they crack, because it interrupts the organized structure. It's also why clarity is so valued in diamonds, because it shows a more perfectly ordered structure (which also makes it much easier to cut).

It's cloudy because the water (molecules) didn't freeze in straight lines at the start, but as it continued to freeze it falls into organized lines. When it's in lines you can see straight though it, when it's not you just see the other lines of frozen water.

Ice gets cloud during the freezing process because of how it freezes, Because all objects freeze from the outside in, the centre of the cube is the last to solidify. Water-free of minerals and impurities freezes first, pushing the cloudy parts containing the sediment (and tiny trapped air bubbles) toward the centre.

The cloudiness in the ice block is due to impurities in the water. Water freezes from the outside in, so all the impurities are pressed towards the center and the last things to freeze are the impurities. Hence the cloudiness in the ice!

As others have mentioned, the ice gets cloudy because of dissolved gas and minerals in the water. What they've been wrong about is that using distilled water or boiling the water before freezing it will fix the problem by itself.. Distilled water is helpful, but that alone won't fix the cloudiness.
What you need to do is freeze it very very slowly while constantly agitating the water (like on some kind of gentle vibrating platform.) this will prevent the outsides of the block from freezing quickly and thus trapping the gas and impurities inside. The agitation allows the gas to move through the block and escape before it totally freezes over.
There was an episode of Mythbusters where they went through this process to make massive blocks of crystal clear ice.

@@RobRoss good question, but no. That wouldn't help. Also it would make it WAY WAY WAY more difficult to freeze, because when you put water into a vacuum chamber, it boils. And even though it's not boiling because it's hot, it is still boiling which would seriously inhibit the crystalization process.
The reason there is a cloudy mass in the middle of the ice block is that water is typically not very pure in it’s liquid state. There are gasses and other impurities dissolved in it. As the water freezes the impurities are forced out between the crystals as they form. If the ice crystals form too quickly, or are frozen from more than one direction simultaneously, the impurities will be trapped and distortion occurs. The first half of your block crystallized directionally. As the the ice crystals formed from the other side and met with the freezing water from the top, all of your other dissolved substances became trapped in a concentrated portion of the ice block.

The water freezes from the sides first and as it freezes it expels impurities and expands. As it’s encased in ice, the water in the middle has nowhere to expand to or anywhere to expel its impurities so the crystal structure of the middle ice is garbled up and therefore cloudy.

The cloudiness in the ice is caused by small bubbles of dissolved gas. As the water freezes, water molecules add to existing ice crystal, pushing impurities (including dissolved gas) to the center. Eventually, the concentration of these gases is too high for the water to support, and they form bubbles like a fizzy drink, which freeze in place. You can solve this problem and make perfectly clear ice if you boil the water before putting it into the freezer. Heating the water to boiling reduces the solubility of atmospheric gases in the water, driving them out before you freeze it and eliminating bubbles in the end product.

The reason why the ice is half cloudy half clear is because when water freezes it freezes from top to bottom and when that happens air bubbles get trapped underneath that frozen top layer and as it keeps freezing downwards the air gets push along while it freezes leaving the bottom half of it cloudy I LOVE SCIENCE 😁❤️

Also if ice freezes at a slower speed it freezes clear. The ice in the middle/ bottom is surrounded by ice so it freezes faster trapping the air and making it cloudy. I know, semantics!
My question is: does it behave the same of you place water into a sphere shaped freezer that is rotated periodically in every direction?
The first melon was 10 kilos (taking that as an average) there was probably 40 kilos of melons at 90 cents per kilo plus gst at 10%. Logically they spent about $39.60 on the melons.

The clear part of the ice froze solid first pushing the dissolved gasses and particles of solid contaminants (mostly minerals) towards the center as the ice crystals formed. There was no place for the impurities to escape, so the cloudy portion is where the ice crystals were unable to form perfectly. If you filter and boil the water prior to freezing it, most of the impurities can be eliminated and the resulting ice will be much clearer depending on the filtering medium used. commercial ice is allowed to flow over the coils which results in a much better looking block of ice that can be carved into ornate sculptures to decorate buffet tables, Etc...

The reason the ice freezes half cloudy and half clear is that ice freezes from the top down. When the water is freezing, allll the extra oxygen is being pushed down which creates bubbles, these bubbles are what makes it cloudy.

It's clear on the outside because when water freezes, it freezes inward. So, the outside freezes first and pushes all the air bubbles and impurities toward the center. Then, when the center freezes (and the air bubbles and impurities have saturated the water), the air bubbles and impurities have nowhere else to go, so they freeze in the water, making it cloudy.
To understand your ice dilemma, you have to first know that water with less impurities is clearer. Closer to true H20=clear.
As it froze in your bowl, it did so from the outside in, and the impurities settled away from the top and sides. So the water on the edges and top produced a clearer ice.
If you fill an insulated cooler with water and freeze it, it'll freeze from the top downwards, and you'll end up with an even larger portion of crystal clear ice.

The type of mat/bed on the trampoline can make a huge difference in the amount of spring you get on the bounce. Check out the type they use in the Olympics.
The cloudy centre of the ice block has to do with the purity of the water. Any of you mechanical or materials engineers out there will know what I'm talking about. A liquid solidifies from the walls of the containers and heads towards the centre. The pure water solidifies first and is the clear ice you can see. This pushes impurities in the water (dust, added chemicals etc) towards the centre and they solidify last. These impurities are the murky white centre.
That's a very simplified explanation but I hope that makes sense :)

I would also like to add to this it also has to do with the way ice freezes. It begins on the outside then goes into the inside so the middle It is much colder than the outside of the ice, bringing out the imperfections in the water. The outside ice also insulates the water making it much cooler inside of the ice further helping my good old buddy the Brilliant Bros point.

The cloudy part is filled with tiny air bubbles and all the impurities that where in the water. When water freeze, anything it contains travels to the part that is not frozen yet. Those ice blocks start freezing from the outside, leaving an area of liquid water in the middle.
To have clear ice, you need to cause it to freeze from the bottom, leaving the top part unfrozen until it's all frozen up.

IDEA: Drop a bowling ball and a hard-boiled egg at the same time onto the trampoline. Science says that they should fall relatively at the same speed. If timed and aimed right, the ball should then rocket the egg up off the trampoline. It would be cool to see if this can be done, and how high the egg would fly.

When you freeze the water in a container, the ice is formed from the outside and grows toward the centre. The centre of the ice block is the last place to freeze. I am pretty sure the reason that the ice is clear on the outside and cloudy on the inside is due to the fact that most ice forms from the outside in. When a bucket of water is placed in a freezer, the part that's in contact with the freezing air is the first to reach freezing point and forms a frozen shell. As the water inside gets colder, its ability to hold dissolved air decreases, but with a frozen shell around it, it can't release the air to the outside, so little bubbles form in the middle, making the inside ice look cloudy.

Ice gets cloud during the freezing process because of how it freezes. ... Because all objects freeze from the outside in, the center of the cube is the last to solidify. Water free of minerals and impurities freezes first, pushing the cloudy parts containing the sediment (and tiny trapped air bubbles) toward the center. Also, drop a water filled yoga ball.

Jmac James agreed, although it’s mostly the air bubbles. Any sediment would already be on the bottom and minerals are dissolved in the water and wouldn’t be visible. Matthias Wandel has a great video where he does a few flash freezing experiments and explains the whole thing. Look up his channel, it’s a gooder!!

The water has frozen from the outside inward. So halfway through freezing there is ice on the outside and water in the middle. As the middle starts to freeze it tries to expand but can't expand due to the outside already being a solid. Resulting in loads of tiny cracks in the middle.

The reason for cloudy ice is this:
Unlike most solids/liquids, water is denser than ice, BUT, cold water is still denser than hot water. That's why ice floats on water. The water as it cools, goes to the bottom of your container, while the coldest water turning-ice floats to the top. The repeated agitation traps bubbles towards the middle.

Ahoy fellas. It freezes clear and goes cloudy in the centre due to voids caused by dissolved gas coming out of solution as the outer edges of the ice freeze and expand. There is a definite point between the cloudy ice and the clear ice because as the ice expands, it also increases the pressure of the gas dissolved in the liquid water until it reaches a critical point and then starts creating bubbles due to off-gassing.
To get perfectly clear ice, try agitating the freezing vessel (i'm guessing you used a a slow cooker pot?) with something that vibrates (I'll let you pick something obvious for the job there :P) while the ice is freezing. Or better yet, put the water into a vacuum chamber (pressure cooker hooked up to a vacuum pump will do) to degas it, then while the pot is still under vacuum, freeze the water. It will be pretty clear then.

Just not true man :/ you used a lot of almost science in the explanation but it's not what happens. As the water freezes any impurities in the water, i.e. anything that is not H2O such as dissolved salts, gases or minerals are pushed away from the boundary where water becomes ice. In the case of an ice cube the outside freezes first forcing the impurities towards the still melted center. However as the center begins to freeze the impurities have nowhere to escape to and as such form the clouds and bubbles you see in the center of the ice.
Agitating the vessel as the water freezes will not remove any impurities, it will likely increase the amount of dissolved gases as it allows the air to mix with the water as it is shaken around. Degassing a liquid with a vacuum is an actual technique but does not remove the salts and minerals present in the water which will still allow clouds to form.
The term off-gassing is a real term but refers to the release of gaseous organic compounds from plastics or chemicals and does not apply in this situation.
An easy way to form clear and impurity free ice is by stopping the freezing process before the impurities become trapped and form clouds. You can see an example of this whenever you partially freeze a tray of ice cubes, the water on the outside is now ice and remains clear, while the water on the inside of the cube has yet to freeze and also remains clear. Break the cube and release the non-frozen water which contains all the impurities which were originally in the ice, you now have a pure, clear and impurity free block of ice. Do this with a large enough ice cube and you can end up with a very large amount of clear ice, see this video for an example:

Jake Adlam - Impurities are only one part of it. And off gassing is not only a term for curing substances. It also refers to any compound, mixture or solution that releases gas as its physical properties change. To say that my answer is wrong or that I am using "almost science" is a little silly.
Deionised, filtered and purified water will still freeze cloudy if they are aerated. It is not impurities that cause the clouds, it is the gas bubbles that are formed in the ice that cause light to refract as it passes through each void. This scattering is responsible for the cloudiness of the ice. Try that for yourself. Try to freeze soda water solid without it becoming cloudy. There is only water and carbon dioxide with trace amounts of impurities due to it being filtered during production. It won't happen. It is the gas being released into the liquid in the centre of the ice. As it is forced into critically high concentrations it just cannot stay dissolved in the water any more.
The reason agitation works so well is because it shakes the ice crystals around as they form. They then group together and align better and force the impurities and gas bubbles away from them, thus technically freezing the block inside to out.
The vacuum technique just removes as much gas as possible to allow clearer ice. Using both techniques together gives an almost perfectly clear block. Using both techniques with pure water will produce an even better result. The best results are when freezing ice at exactly -1 degrees. This is cold enough to just get over the energy difference between liquid and solid and is warm enough to allow the crystals to form very slowly. The larger each crystal is, the better.
But for the less informed; freezing it under vacuum or vibrating it as it freezes will produce *sufficiently* clear ice. They didn't ask for a scientific technique to perform it, they asked what caused it to become cloudy. I explained that and then gave them ways to avoid it.
Garden Life - Not always true. Sometimes that does work but you need to release the gas in the water. If the filter aerates the water in the filtering process, it doesn't work perfectly and bubbles will still form. Read the above comment and you'll get the idea of what I'm saying.
Go to a ice company that specializes in icecarving and they will hook you up with a clearer ice block for your drops!!
