  • Put the Subaru Outback on this ferry to see the 50th Downeast Bluegrass and OldTime Music Festival, Ardoise, NS. Recorded 7/25/2023. Fun ride, highly recommended.
The Alakai was originally commissioned as a US Navy vessel for ferry service in Hawaii (along with another sister ship). Environmental lobby against inter-island ferry service in Hawaii (whales) resulted in this ferry being brought over to the east coast and is now leased by the Canada Government from the US for ferry service between Bar Harbor, Maine and Yarmouth, NS. It spends its winters in Charleston, SC. for maintenance and storage.

Took it once. What a grubby, dirty experience. I needed 3 showers when I got off…

That ferry sure hit the news, Nova Scotia has and is spending 100's on millions floating it. If a Canadian wants to take it, they pay in US dollars, Its all US staff and the port and customs office was paid for by Nova Scotia.. People that come from the USA to Nova Scotia only get like an hr to visit before the ferry heads back
