  • In this Episode of Wavy Wednesday's I'll be showing you how to use a classic dual compressor vocal chain to achieve smooth vocal compression and analog warmth on your lead vocal. I'll show you how you can use the Waves CLA-76 Compressor to tame the peaks in your vocal performance, followed by the Waves CLA-2A Compressor to smooth out the vocals even more and add some analog warmth and color to your vocals. This is a tried and true method of vocal compression that can create a nice and smooth sounding vocal.

    Great video thanks for the info! You’re a great teacher. Just wanted to clarify that the compression amount on the 1176 actually increases as you increase the ratio from 4-20 (4 being the least compression, 20 being the hardest limiting) All buttons mode does its own special type of distortion/compression - it’s not actually limiting harder than the 20 ratio, rather it’s constantly changing between a 12:1 and 20:1 ratio while simultaneously varying the attack and release times.

    One important point. The Gain control of an LA-2A is a makeup gain control, not an input gain. This is counter-intuitive to its placement on the panel in what we would normally assume is a 'left to right' circuit. In this case, your input to the LA-2A after an 1176 will be determined by the output of the 1176, and the LA-2A's Gain will determine the final output to the channel.

    • @jasperruusunen6999

    A lot of ppl are saying to use the 2a before the 76 now

    • @FlyGuyJ
      @FlyGuyJ  3 роки тому +1

      There are some who like to do it the opposite way around. The most important thing to understand is why you are using an la-76 vs an la-2a, and what you are hoping to accomplish when placing it in your vocal chain. My preference is to tame peaks and then add color/character, and I compress a little more with SSL, or RVOX for final smoothing out and more color on top of those two compressors. Every plugin you add should have a purpose.

      Roll off 90 and below. 100/300 usually take out a few db there to get rid of muddiness or 350/600 i cut for boxiness. Try to boost around 2k for more presence and sometimes boost around 6k and then around 10k boost for air. Does this sound right lol

      @@ajtoronto2006 my guess would be that the room you are listening back to your recordings in could use some treatment or may be built in a way where the sound is always going to play a trick on you. What sounds good in that room can sound totally different in a car or another environment. I would use reference tracks when mixing to compare your mix to something that is already released and you know sounds like the sound you are trying to achieve. Also, you can look into room treatment, speaker orientation, etc.

      Thanks bruh, yeah I would probably use a single compressor on an instrument unless it was a very dynamic performance that you are trying to tame in similar fashion. You can use compressor on instruments to bring up quieter parts of the instrument, even out the levels of an instrument, or make an instrument stand out more in a mix. Many plugins have presets for instruments that you can explore and tweak the settings to your liking

    • @FlyGuyJ
      @FlyGuyJ  3 роки тому +1

      The quick answer is use mono plugins on a mono audio track (Has one single waveform and one pan knob), use stereo plugins on a stereo audio track (Has Left & Right waveforms and two pan knobs)
      Usually sources like a vocal (microphone) or guitar are mono audio files, whereas something like a keyboard would be stereo.
      Taking it a step further, I would use stereo plugins for anything that is creating a sense of depth or space (ex. reverb, modulation, delays)

      this compressor behaves differently, the threshold changes at different ratios so you actually end up with more compression. I’ve been learning about mixing my own music. I understand why you make sure the level is the same before and after the compressor, but when in the process do you turn up the volume from the vocal so it’s louder?

    • @FlyGuyJ
      @FlyGuyJ  2 роки тому

      If you need to turn the final vocal up or down you can use a limiter like the L1 or a plugin like RVOX as the last plugin in your vocal chain

    • @FlyGuyJ
      @FlyGuyJ  2 роки тому

      you can also use the output knob on the last plugin in your chain, or you can send the vocals to a bus, and use the volume knob on the bus to control final volume without changing how your plugin chain is affecting the vocals

  • @OfFormerFame
    @OfFormerFame 2 роки тому +1

    This video was really well done and quite helpful, but the Ratio description you provided is incorrect. :(
    You stated as you go down, it's more compression. It's actually less compression as you go down. The 20 settings means 20:1 or 20 to 1. For every 20 dB over the threshold, only 1 is allowed out. 12:1 = 12 in, 1 out. 8:1 = 8 in, 1 out. 4:1 = 4 in, 1 out. So 4:1 is LESS compression. 4:1 is the lowest compression on this unit while 20:1 is basically limiting. If you put in 20 dB with the 4:1 setting, you'd get 5 dB of audio out, while the 20:1 setting would have only let out 1 dB.
    The ALL button is a quirk of the hardware where you could literally press the 20, 12, 8, and 4 buttons in simultaneously and get some heavy distorted compression. Since you can't press all the buttons in software, an ALL button was provided and put at the bottom of the buttons list.

    • @FlyGuyJ
      @FlyGuyJ  2 роки тому

      I could have done a better job explaining, but the quirkiness about this plugin is is that the threshold changes as you change the ratio. Because of this, the 4:1 ratio actually equals more compression than the 20:1 ratio...
      Here is an excerpt pulled straight from the manual...
      "Like many compressors, the higher the ratio, the higher the threshold. For example, at a ratio of 20:1, the threshold point is -12 dBFS, meaning that every peak which passes -12dBFS will be compressed at a 20:1 ratio. When ratio is set to 4:1, the threshold drops to -18dBFS, meaning that every peak which passes -18dBFS will be compressed at a ratio of 4:1. This, therefore, results in “more” compression, despite the lower ratio."

    • @zzhoward
      @zzhoward 2 роки тому +1

      @@FlyGuyJ I tested this in the software to find out the values of the thresholds for each ratio and you are proven 100% correct. Non-scientific testing with an input level of -0.1 dBFS showed a threshold of -13.4 dBFS for 4:1, -10.7 dBFS for 8:1, -9.6 dBFS for 12:1, -8.2 dBFS for 20:1, and -12.4 dBFS for ALL.
      This meant that the maximum gain reduction registered through Waves Studio Rack was (going top down from highest ratio) 7.6 dbs of reduction for 20:1, 8.7 dbs for 12:1, 9.1 dbs for 8:1 and 10.1 dbs of gain reduction for 4:1, just as you said. The most compression is occurring at the 4:1 setting, with the exception of the ALL mode, which had a maximum gain reduction of 11.5 dbs.
      Spot on!
