I'm exhausted trying to will that machine to work. LOL This is just as valuable and valid a demonstration as one that is edited to perfection or one that goes off without a hitch. You are truly teaching warts and all and I, for one, need to see it to make an informed decision.🤟
When my mat won't recognized I clean off the strip on the back, and it recognizes it.
Thank you! I'm so excited that you answered my question. This is exactly what I needed to know! I was struck by the fact that Shannon had that circle cut out and in her hands while Maymay was still pressing buttons--both times. I'm not looking to make hundreds of cuts; I just want to decorate folios and make quilt cards, so now I know that the machine for me is a die cutter rather than an electronic cutting machine. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for explaining the difference and for the demo. Thanks also for being real about it and leaving the first machine in the video. That also was helpful! You sure have made me smile today.
I am only one year into paper crafting, and loving it!
This video is the exact reason I buy every single paper crafting item from you, and not from Amazon. You’re honest and I can trust you.
Thank you so much for proving me right. Hugs to all of you. 💖
P. S. Not ready for a die cutting machine yet, but it was interesting.
Another thought. The Gemini is less expensive up front but then you need to purchase dies and/or embossing folders to use the Gemini. In the long run, the Scan n cut or cricu machines “might” be less money.
Even the joy would cut small shapes. That is all you needs for cards.
I say go electronic. Because with a cricut you have so many shapes. Even if you get a joy you have a smaller machine but so many choices for shapes. You would have to purchase 200 dies.
Also there are so many free svg files available for those not confident or interested in making they’re own which is actually a pleasure once you understand how your particular machine processes (sees) the data.
The plus to the Gemini or Anna Griffin's similar machine is that they can give a really deep emboss to the cut image that the electronic machines can't.
Depends if you just craft for yourself or doing things to sell etc. I get my dies and embossing folders from Aliexpress for a few dollars each and that is enough for me as I just make cards for family and friends etc. I only buy dies and folders that I can use for many different cards, as I do not want to have to store them all etc.
This was real life crafting - complete with the unexpected and unwanted frustrations that show up at the most inconvenient times. 😊 I depend on my crank model but have a Cricut for other projects.
Just a shout out to scan n cut. I LOVE my scan n cut and have never had an issue loading the mat. Maybe I’m just lucky
Excellent tutorial on comparison of machines. I have all three machines and use them for different reasons. I find the SDX125E to be a nuisance at times and more time consuming but I love that I can scan my own designs. I’m still learning the Cricut Maker but it is a winner and I still have the original electronic one (uses cartridge) that is 25 years old and works like a charm. Honestly my favorite by far is still the Sizzix Big Shot. Simplicity sometimes is the best.
Loved this video. I have a Scan n Cut and had the problem once and so I opened up the back and there was a piece of washi tape on the glass scanner part. Once I removed it I had no more problems.
I had the same problem one time.
Great explanation of the difference between the types of machines available. Understanding your crafting process will help to make the decision. If your crafting style changes, you can always upgrade to the next step up.
Thank you for keeping it real
Thank you for sharing this!!! Glad I’m not the only one that has real issues and frustrating moments in crafting.
Thank you for always being real...the good, the bad, the frustrating and the fixes (magnets I'm looking at you lol). I appreciate it so much. 😊
Great video to bring clarity. Thank you for your expertise and sharing of knowledge.
Thanks for keeping it real!
Thank you for sharing all the pitfalls.
I absolutely love my Gemini! I have both sizes!
This, our friend and mentor, is proof positive that we are all human and stuff happens. You kept your cool and we learned good things. Now I want a Scan and Cut machine even though I have a hand crank machine, an electric Big Shot Switch (which i absolutely love BTW) a Silhouette and a Cricut. Can I have it all? Why not!
Thank you for the share.... Needed information...
What a great video! That answered a lot of questions that I had! I'm so glad you shared the whole video! There are advantages and drawbacks to all the machines. Some are a bit more costly than others! This was very helpful! TYFS! Hugs
Reality is good to show us. I appreciate seeing that things don't always go smoothly...even for an expert. 😃 Thanks, for being willing to share your vulnerability with us. I respect you even more now. Thanks to Shannon too for encouraging you to show the reality of the situation.
I just started watching you a few days ago. I’m a quilter and also started crocheting. After Watch you video i think I’ll enjoy making quilted cards. I even already picked up some paper to start with.
I was feeling your pain, Maymay. I have the DM350 and love it! After watching your challenge issues with the DMX, I can't help but feel grateful that I haven't upgraded...lol. I also have the crank die cutter and electric die cutter/embossing machine and the Cricut Air...love them all!
Oh, so I'm not the only one to have this problem with the DX machine. So, so annoying till I figured it out. I thought I wasn't using it right. Now I know that there's a particular mat that works with it. So glad you did this video. Now I don't feel dumb for buying my DX. LOL
I have a cricut maker 3 and I love it. I also do paper crafting cutting paper on WR memory maker paper trimmer and score board. The two work very well for me. I also have the Big Shot but hardly ever use it.
This video was sooo helpful to me and just what I needed to see because I was just about to go buy the wrong thing! Thank you so much!
Once my Brother started having issues with the mat, it refused to like ANY mats. Lol. But it sure did chew up a lot of mats! But it’s working much better now.
I love that you put this video out. I have 3 Cricuts and I chose to get a die cutting machine specifically to be able to cut out my stamps with coordinating dies and to cute delicate word dies. The Cricut does not always cut delicate words out right at least that was the case with my Explore, I just got the Maker and I mostly do quick small crafts and labeling with my Joy.
Thank you for showing your mishap. I learned something indirect of what you were showing. I am a cricut user and have been thinking about getting a brother. I learned that then need a specific mat with registration on it. Thanks.😊
I appreciate your "REANESS" I have a silhouette and sometimes it gives me issues. I don't own a Gemini but I do have a Big shot and I use it a lot. However, when I have a lot of one thing to cut I use my Silhouette.
I have a Cricut and absolutely love it and use it a lot! That being said I also have a big shot that I love and use as well.
Love this....sometimes when I can't do something I have to just put it down and come back to it much later.
Glad you kept it real! Use my big shot while my Cricut gathers dust.
Thanks for the explanation! I have the "old" scan n cut (the exact same one) right here beside me! I love it and it has cut out over 200 very intricate wedding invitations for my friend. I also use the free software on my computer to cut free svgs. In saying that, I also like my Spellbinders manual crank die cutting machine. I used it to cut about 100 laminated circles (fake poker chips) for a casino themed party back before I had my scan n cut. That was an arm workout but it did the job!
Best of luck with your new scan n cut - I hope you get it working properly again soon :)
This is reality. There are times my Cricut frustrates me so much I’m ready to chunk it out the window. I have a small die cut machine ($8 HL clearance) and an embossing machine (another HL clearance), both crack style, that I love and use constantly. I’m slowly building my die and embossing folder stash as finances allow. Thank you for sharing this reality with us and I’m glad you got it to work.
You can get some really good dies, and embossing folders from Aliexpress, and they are super cheap.
I use about a two inch piece of Black insulation tape folded over each side so about 1/16" projects. Don't cover up the marks, this fixes the not loading and the crooked loading for me
Great presentation Maymay and Shannon! True, we have technology issues at times. I am embarrassed to admit I only use my San and Cut as a pair of scissors for fussy cutting a full sheet or many items. If I am only cutting a couple of items, I use my CutterBees. I LOVE my Cricut machines and will even run multiple machines for big projects. Super timesaver! When I am only making a few cards, I use my Empress or Gemini with my dies and embossing folders. As someone who works full time and volunteers a lot, it is super helpful to have the assortment of tools. If my Scan and Cut dies, I would not replace it. For now, I am blessed. Thank you for your education! I appreciate having great tools to craft with.
Maymay, you started me on my card making journey 5 yrs ago, been in love ever since, have sooooo many supplies, 2 Geminis, 2 Diamond press and a Cricket Joy. You are the best out there, love your team and you sooo very much. Thank you for all you do for th3 Papercrafting community
Great explanation
Thanks for explaining this. Just gifted my Cricut to a preschool and wondered which to replace it with, problem solved!
Great video!!!!
I really appreciate the frustration of the machine not working right. I have it happen all the time to me. ( probably because I don’t use it enough to really know it)
I have the same problem with my scan n cut. I bought mats on Amazon and they did not work in my old machine but would work in my new scan n cut. So yes this does happen from time to time.
Love this video with all its "warts". It is real life frustration that many times shuts me down on crafting. I am on the fence about a Scan N Cut because I want to cut around stamped images. But I have seen this issue in so many comments when I research the Scan n cut. And for $400 I don't want issues. Thanks for another great video. Also I love to see that your Gemini plates are as warped as mine!!
I had that same issue with my scan n cut after one of the updates, after the last update it works better
I cut out 2 same sized butterflies, using the same card stock- one with a die cut, the other on a Cricut. The die cut produced slightly rounded edges and gave more depth to the intricate butterfly wings.
I have had the same problem with my scan and cut since I bought it. I tried to reach out to brother and didn’t get any answer. But I have notice that ever once in a while I have to unlock the one side of the roller and reset it and lock it back down again.
I have the SnC CM350 and love it. No issues with mats. Sadly, it's not made anymore and the word is the mats will be discontinued too. Your issues are exactly why I haven't upgraded to the DX machines. Also have the Cricut Explorer and two sizes of the Gemini. But the SnC is my overall favorite.
Maymay, perfect timing!!!! I just ordered a Gemini Jr!!!! Good to hear all your comments on these machines! I'm brand new to cardmaking and think the Gemini Jr would work for me. I have shoulder issues and the electric is better than the cranking cutter for me. Thank you!
You had done a previous video that explained this, but I liked watching it for the review. I had an older scan n cut and sold it when I was moving with the plan to buy a new one. I haven't yet, so I am eager for you to do a review/demonstration of what is available now. Thanks for all you do and your great videos.
You have said in the past to do our research and so I did. I bought the perfect machine for me - the electric Sizzix Big Shot Plus. I have collected Sizzix dies, including the thick dies, and other dies for years. When this machine came out it was exactly what I wanted and I have not regretted my choice.
I have a Scan N Cut. The one before this machine and I don't have problems.
Thanks for showing this. I have the cricut maker and I also have the Spellbinder machines. I purchased my cricut 2 years ago and just took it out of the box last week but haven't set it up yet and the Spellbinder I've had for at least 5 years and just took it out of the box last week also. I know, that's terrible. My goal is to learn both machines and make my own Christmas cards this year and some wall decor peices for my home. So keep the videos coming. Have a blessed week!
Same here! Mine is out of the box, but that's as far as I got! I use my scan n cut when I need quantities or vinyl etc. Not sure why I bought the circuit, but I really do intend to use it someday!
After making Christmas cards and cutting 50 Christmas trees with my 'hand crank' machine, I purchased one of the electronic machines. They really are both very different. I'm fortunate that I can have both.
I have the old version of the Big Shot manual/crank machine that I keep in my craft area. I have the Cricut Joy in my "computer room". At this time, I don't need anything more than this. Maybe one day, I will upgrade the Cricut. But the Joy suits my needs perfectly now.
i love my scan n cut 2. they don't make it anymore and as long as i can get mats from Amazon, I'm keeping it. i also love my Joy and manual cutting machines. You are right, they all kinda do the same thing, it just depends.
That's actually a good demonstration as to why I need to have both. Haha
Thanks for being real. 😁😁😁
I have the original scan and cut. I saved up to buy it and very soon after I did they came out with a newer version that I guess does more. I do use it for its scanning feature and when I need a lot of the same shape fast. So maybe 4 times a year! But I use my Big Shot die machine every week
Thanks for including the oops instead of cutting it out.
That was perfect
I still crank my die cuts😂, but I like that Gemini!!!😁
Thank you for that!
Thank you for being real with the problems you were having it is refreshing seeing the OOPS and not just the perfect results. I have a cutting and embossing machine that cranks , it is perfect for me because I am so tech challenged and if I am frustrated I will just give up , so my machine is just fine for me. I was wondering, doesn't electric cutting machines emboss as well? I Love the look and fell of an embossed card. Another thing about the crank machine I don't have to worry about if my machine stops working because of a malfunction in a program or if it just stops working for some reason and I need to get something done in a specific time frame, I know my crank is there to be used without any issues, IMO. Thanks again Maymay and Shannon for all you guys do for your crafting community. Oh BTW, HAPPY VALENTINES DAY TO YOU ALL,😘❤😘❤😘❤😘
Your mat...I turn my mat over and the top right and left sides, where it grabs the mat, I use an emery board to rough up the rollers grab the mat.
I always do this, and it works with my DX
I have a silhouette Cameo. But I have the Gemini on my wish list. One day I will get it
I have all the machines and you really show the truth. Because some days electronic machines will not cooperate. The electric die cutters almost always work although o find the Gemini Plate system too complicated and frustrating. I got the sizzix switch instead. I also have the old Scan n Cit like
Yours and it is a great machine!
I have the same issue with my scan n cut
I have the same problem loading.
It's been my experience that when a mat goes in crooked once, it will not work again with my brother sdx. Don't feel bad that it's in the video. They all have flaws. They are machines. But they all have great benefits... Love y'all 💘
I was literally laughing out loud watching you try to get that mat to load. I get so frustrated with my die-cut machines I could scream. Thanks for leaving it in as it actually happened!
That was more real than you think!
You can rough up the edges where the rollers catch with an Emory board. That might help it feed.
Well, I have a Big Shot (hand cranked) die cutting machine and a CM900 Brother Scan n Cut. I wouldn't use the SNC to cut a single shape if I had a die for it. I DO use by SNC to scan images and cut them out (instead of fussy cutting} and I use the offset line to make shadow cuts for all sorts of things. My Big Shot can't do that. I do prefer the cut you get from a die cut as the edge is slightly bevelled. Pros and Cons Maymay! Thanks for an interesting video. Good to see it warts and all.
I have a ScanNCut and bought the wrong type of mats which is how I found out there are different mats for different ScanNCut machines.
Thank you, Maymay. As an owner of Cricut and Gemini, and a big kick that I recently found at a thrift store, I find that they each do different and necessary things. The Cricut can do everything except emboss, which I think is vital to card making. The Gemini can do everything except 3-D folders, at least not the Tim Holtz, thick 3-D folders. It is a blessing to have all the machines for their different functions. Really would miss the embossing if I only had the Cricut.
Actually you can emboss on a cricut, at least very simple designs by using the score line. I needed a "brick" background and did not have a folder. Yes it took forever, but it did woek.
I feel your pain, I love my DX machine but the mats are horrible.
Hmmmm, I had considered getting a scan n cut eventually so that I could cut out stamped images that don't have a coordinating die. Now I'm not sure it's worth the expense.
And then some of us have to have them all...my children are grown and I love them all...except that I really need to learn my Scan 'N Cut!!!
Hi, great video! Ive been thinking about getting the ScanNCut for awhile now. I did find the CM650WX for right under 600. I know you prefer this one. Thoughts? Do i purchase it or wait to see you demo the latest and greatest one once you get it? Much appreciated.
I have a Cricut for a year. In a last few months, I realized that I can not emboss or cut very intricate projects using cardstock with it. It is great EXCEPT for card making. I used it for making stickers, print and cut and vinyl projects. So I decided to buy a Spellbinders and I do not regret it. However I realized, that it will end up being more expensive than my Cricut considering that embossing folders and dyes are quite expensive
I love die cutting machines for very intricate dies. They'd take forever to cut out on my Cricut.
I have the original version of scan & cut - it is dying and I am so sad. I love that machine
What is the model number of the old scan and cut? If it’s no longer available, can you let us know which scan and cut to purchase because I’ve been wanting to purchase one lately thank you.
OMG Maymay and Shannon this was Awesomely Spectacular!! My goodness gracious. Love that you really and truly did a hands on tutorial and any hiccups….well we all have ‘em and you just proved that patience is a virtue…..things don’t go as planned….well. Step back deep breath a Kuppa Kuppa : had to toss this in cuz that’s in my Emergency kit. 🤣😂🤣😂 “ovxed the comparisons of it all or not even a comparison but just all the different options,,,,gosh I even hack e options depending on how big the job or how small the job is!! GREAT showcasing all the different machines and yeppers sumpin’ sumpin’ for everyone!! Again this was awesome sauce and you 2 do made my evening!! Well,in the infamous words of Super Kuppa Kuppa girl. YOU TWO SO ROCK!!!!
Joan ☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️Smifh
I also want the Joy but really don't need it. Haha
Can you do embossing with Scan n cut? I wouldn't think so, but not sure.
You need to get the accessories for embossing
Well, I won't be buying that Brother. LOL. great test ladies.
I think many of us card makers have the same love hate relationships with our electronic die cutters. They are wonderful…until they’re not lol
I think this convinced me not to purchase a scan and cut! 🤔🤭😂 But I'll wait to see if you get another one. Seems Brother should gift you one 🤭🤭🤭. TFS 💕💕💕
I purchased a scan and cut but I found that I didn't use it as much as I thought I would and I got frustrated because I couldn't get it to cut the images as I wanted them.
My scan n cut does that all the time it drives me nuts.
My brother did that until I bought my new mat.
Had this happen to me! Frustrating for sure.
I love my vagabond and my scan n cut cm350r. I think that scan n cut has been discontinued. Thank you for reminding me I need a new mat. I hope they still make mats and blades for it!!
Still being sold it England
@@agardener3621 Thank you! I ordered mine. I am someone who resticks my mats, but the numbers on the sides were wearing off, and that screws the loading and alignment up. I can't complain. My mats last an average of 15 to 18 months.
I have the Gemini and the Cricut, but I really want the Scan and Cut. Just a financial thing....have to keep waiting. That was what happens in real life!!!
Create and Craft have an offer on the CM600 at the moment £245.00
This was a great over view thanks for doing this. I have a Gemini JR myself quick and easy except the warping of plates that is challenge with die plates. Too many C machines and online buys but I am sure at some point I’ll give in to the step up machine options
A hint for dies plates and folders is to flip them over every so many run through so they done look like bananas ,all curvy, it help so dies cut more even . I am sure many people know this already but even I forget sometimes. Lol.
I flip them all the time, they just warp over time. We probably use ours a lot more than most so over time they will do that.
Sizzix (for Bigshot) sells a 3-pack (3 different sizes of plates per pack). Buy two packs, then select two same size plates, that most closely match your die size. This greatly reduces warping of plates. Think of this (comparatively) to a large tire running over a small screw or nail. The large tire takes all the pressure of a small nail (die) -- causing a puncture ("warping"). A small shape die on a large plate causes all that (concentrated) pressure in one position on the plate, causing warping. Also keep one plate in "uncut" condition and flip/turn frequently.
What machine is the grey/blue?
Hithat is the Scan nCut Dx,thanks
The cricut has free images and it has free shapes you can use
Yes, but they are not built in to the machine. The scan n cut images are on board. I don’t have to turn on my computer or use an app at all. That is why I compared it as apples to sort of apples.
Yes that is so true, didn’t think of it that way.
Does cricut emboss because I don’t see how it works? I know it scores and has the stylus but, how do you emboss your entire page like with the quilting cards?
Hi no a Cricut does not emboss, that is where a hand crank machine or the Gemini Junior comes into play, thanks
Thank you so so much @Tamatha! I appreciate the super quick response! This was a great video!
Scan and cut looks hard to use…lol
I've heard that moving your machine from one place to another can cause this type of trouble. Maybe an update is needed.
