Good tips. I’m not sure about breaking rules, but a hard fast rule for me lately is to try and clean my space. So next time I want to craft, I don’t have to dig out first!
Me too Regan…I live by don’t put it down…put it away. Sometimes I put everything back before I start a second card. It’s easier for me to just start fresh each card.
I'm always "cheating". I used to spend hours trying to do perfect. It was stressful and not much fun. One day I heard a UA-camr say "it's handmade! it's not supposed to be perfect! Riiiight. The overall design is what makes me happy, not a perfectly "scored/folded" card.
One thing I try to recognize and am so bad about it….. if I get tired STOP. I always think awww just 5 more minutes I can do it. Then I start making mistakes and the 5 become 35 or more. Better to stop and come back to it after resting!
Yep, same here. One of my pets knocked over a glass of water onto a newly completed mini album for my son. He saw me making the album and asked me if I would gift it to him. The water ruined the album and the many, many hours I had spent on the album were wasted. It took me three years to work up the gumption to re-make the album. So, never, ever, ever will have a liquid anywhere near my projects.
After stamping with inks, I always go wash my hands even if I don't see any ink on me. Because if I touch card or project right after, I will leave smudges or fingerprints. After I die cut, I put the dies onto a magnetic sheet. Don't put them down anywhere but on that sheet. This stopped the dies getting lost or tossed out with paper scraps.
Where I come from, making something work with what you've got is called improvising. Creative people are really good at it! My craft room = my rules, which are subject to change as needed.😊
My granddaughter saw your signature black and white picture, and she wanted to know what Disney show you are on 😊. I said, "What do you mean? And she said, She's a princess! I thought you would get a kick out of that. 😊
When making multiple cards of the same design that has numerous cuts, (especially angles) I make a pattern and trace it rather than measuring over and over again. On occasion it might be off a bit but I just alter as needed to make it work!!!
Cutting in the direction of the bar is the best rule I’ve learned. Thanks for it. I’ve often wondered WHY is my cut crooked??!!? Not happening so much now 😊❤ I ALWAYS have to have hand sanitizer on my craft table, it saves the messes I make 🤪
I needed a larger die cut machine, but can’t afford one. I cut one of the DT little self-healing mats to fit my Texture Boutique embosser. Works like a charm!
I have a notebook and everytime I produce a card I will do a "Sample Card" and pop it into my book with all step by step cutting instructions. ALWAYS do this. I am also a quilter and I do exactly the same for my quilts, and include sample fabric used.
Loved this video! I've been collecting ideas (card recipes) in a binder and am now thinking I might want to add a section that holds my sandwich information along with tips, etc.
Great tips! It always sticks in my brain...."Alcohol moves alcohol and water moves water." That's something I learned from a very good instructor! 😘 So thank you so much for that, Maymay!! 🩷 Suzy
A simple card ❤I never feel it is good enough. Many times I don’t send a card at all because I don’t have time to make the fancy one. Just last week I could have used one of your wonderful thank you sets to make all the difference on a plain note card. Thank you for this❤️
MamaDisney Never underestimate the power of handmade. I work in a dialysis clinic. Our patients are a clientele, same days , hours etc. The staff knew our facility would be shutting down so on out last official Christmas/ holiday season we used plain inside thank you cards and I brought (as the only crafter) my stash of goodies so every patient got a handmade card. We just added stickers and sentiments to card stock we cut to cover the print on thank you’d (lol) waste not want not It has been my experience that I wouldn’t be making something for someone who wouldn’t appreciate it in the first place. We as crafters expect to much of ourselves . Just make it. Trust me, the recipient will love it . Wishing you great crafting , Kandy Staff really jumped in . Even the Inexperienced ones. They were so excited to see it happen and each person felt extra special. The one that was upside down was the best reaction because the patient said “Just like me, different.”
I realized that cardstock cutting was a pain, but didn't realize that there was a reason for it. I find I set my cardstock to the bottom, then pull down with my rotary blade. much cleaner cuts. The one rule I break is to put things away AFTER I've done a project. I get so mentally tired, that I am apt to leave it out for a few hours or overnight, which is bad. I have accidentally left the top off of an ink pad overnight! Thankfully, I had a refill to reink the pad.
I’m a leftie too ❤ and I think we’ve learned to do things a bit different and don’t even realize it until we see someone right handed do it different. As long as it works right 😊
Just one small thing the manufacturers of the Gemini state do not use the magnetic plate as a top plate because directly exposing the magnet can destroy the inner workings of the machine. Use the clear or white plates as top. Always cover the magnetic plate.
I have a big guillitine paper cutter that I love! But when I have to cut small increments I do have a cricut and have learned this lesson especially with less expensive/less heavy papers. Appreciate the reminder!
I often score my card base and then turn it to fold. I push it all the way into the corner, fold into the corner, and then burnish in the middle of the fold and out to each side. This solved many of the issues I had with uneven edges.
I rotate my trimmer so it is upside down...I'm left handed and I can see the measurement lines much better when they are closer to me. I still get a bit confused about which way to fold when I score.
Good tips. The one for fussing cutting got me because those are my go-to scissors . And the cutting of the paper I don't always cut the going up. Now I know why sometimes my paper looks a little off. And I don't use the scoring board. Like your Tips, share more.
My crafting experience has changed since I applied your tips and “rules “ and am less frustrated. Thank you for taking the time to show and explain the reasons behind the rules… it is easier to remember the rule of thumb knowing the goal that will be achieved by following it. I have more FUN Thanks for sharing
Good video. It's nice to hear that I'm not the only one who sometimes "cheats". If my score mark is just a little off I sometimes trim the card & keep on going rether than start over.
I’m like you…when I got my Gemini I needed to remember the sandwiches. I printed them on an index card then laminated it and taped it to the top. Great reference for me when my brain is tired.
I agree about always sliding the cutting blade up on a trimmer. You taught me that. I often stamp an ink that may not work well with alcohol markers but I am just super careful like you were in coloring.
You are so right on the cutting platforms I even hold tight on guillotine cutters. I break the rule of not cleaning my stamps every stamp.. I will later but not right a way.
Thank you so much for this video! I have been doing many of these things "against the rules" . I could tell things were not done well but didn't know the best practice to fix it or what exactly was causing the issues. My card making is sure to improve after watching this!
Thank you for the pushing against the stop explanation when cutting. Very helpful. I sometimes fold the score line with the raised score side up instead of on the inside
The paper-trimmer-rule is great !!! But there are also some rules dictated by the paper like grain-direction, expansion and shrinking of humid (glued) paper etc., which shouldn't be ignored. 🙂
Awesome tips! Never realized about the direction that you cut but makes sense because with fabric and wood you can be cutting “against the grain”. So why not paper?!?!
All those no no’s are some I didn’t know were no no’s lol, the scissors. That explains a lot.. lol snips.. one time there was a car accident outside my shop. The police officer came in asked to use a pair of scissors.. guess which pair my husband gave him to cut the rubber inside the wheel area of a car! Yes my snips! Talk about using the wrong scissors! Lol .. I alway cut from the other side of my trimmer. I watch everyone have their numbers at the bottom. Mine are at the top.. because I can see it better lol! But thank You!❤️
My rule is I want to have my cards be as perfect and cute as possible. However I see people stress over the exact type of paper to use and I can't. I would love to use Neenah all the time but the people I send my cards to are not crafters. They wouldn't know the difference and as long as it comes out just as cute who cares. I have never received a complaint that my paper wasn't smooth enough or white enough etc. Thanks for this video.
I've used my Versa Fine and realized as I'm stamping that I'm going to color with alcohol markers so I put embossing powder on it, heat it and move on...if it works great if not, I start over and try not to beat myself up. Also, I have made cards that fit pretty envelopes and have no problem with that...believe me, people just appreciate the card and don't care about it's size.
You didn’t mention this rule. When scoring and folding, like you, I put the bump on the outside. Many will tell us that the bump goes on the inside but that is where I say “you do you”.
I’ve found if I stampin black versatile and I want to colour, if I heat set with clear embossing powder, the gloss will act asa barrier to contain the colour
My basic rule for me is, when I score paper, I do not fold against the score line. I never understood the why in doing that. I strictly fold on the scored line.
I would never use alcohol markers on a no-layer card front. The rule I break too much is not bringing my trimmer blade back down to cut when my card stock is at the top.
When I have time, I’ll score a full sheet of card stock for bases, then cut in half. That way I feel I’m not scoring as much as if I did each card base individually. 😊
OMG Maymay what an awesome video and share and really didn’t realize about rules for crafting…..maybe it’s because I am a die hard scrapper who sometimes makes cards and other things. But I must say I learned lots watching tryout video…….and to be honest you did make me laugh……I learns lots from videos for scrapping and crafting and then just kinda make it my own using the inspiration in abundance!! I have been working really hard at being neater…..and it’s hard because when I was done for,the day it looked like a tornado went thru and uggh took forever to neaten up and for year cuz started my scrapping January 2004!! But I’d say I’m doing much better but still not 100% there. Love what you shared and great pointer and thought shares!! Love your videos like this…always learn oodles and definitely food for thought!! GREAT JOB!!! YOU SO ROCK!! Joan Smith
Thank you for sharing this! I do the colouring thing. The cutting thing I’m guilty of that one! I will take your advice though, it makes sense! I always always clean my stamps immediately as I hate them stained. I’ve got some 30 year old red rubber ones that are still as good as new.
I have tried various rules and I find sometimes that my creativity gets stifled if I do. One thing I will not do is craft with cheap paper. In the past I have purchased tablets of thin scrapbook paper, not cardstock. I have so much of it that I have given some of it away to Good Will. It does not score well and sometimes even though scored it does not fold without peeling. I tried using it for origami or paper folding techniques and that does not work. I use it strictly for matting.
I bought that Tim Holts mini snips not realizing it was serrated. Its sharp, comfortable and I wanted to use it for fussy cutting until I saw the jagged edge. Thanks for the tip. Btw what is the purpose of having a serrated scissors?
I learned this when I had my flower shop. During busy seasons, I would push on to try and get ahead when I was too tired, and it always backfired on me.
When you want something to be absolutely perfect for that one special occasion, sure. But how often do crafted things really have to be "perfect"? Don't you ever craft just because you feel like it? I often do that when inspiration strikes.
Well, kinda, if it’s for me. Then I puts around experimenting with stuff I can sit and do. But if I’m making something for a customer or as a gift, I try to do it when I’m feeling good.
I don’t know if this is considered breaking a rule but I use 2 cutting plates no matter if I am die-cutting or embossing… I think it’s because it’s easier for me to remember the same “sandwich” instead of multiple ones.
Hi, yes we use the lines on the trimmer to measure where you need to cut the paper, here is a video that may help you ua-cam.com/video/GIGS7gALvx4/v-deo.html
Beth, it depends on what type of marker. Water-based markers require a different stamp ink than alcohol markers. Generally, you don't want the stamp ink to be the same or similar type as your marker. There are videos that go into really good detail about it. It would be worth your while to search them and watch a few. They helped me a lot!😊
I have found that if I slide my paper on the cutter until it just covers the measurement it’s near perfect. If it is a wider measurement mark, I slide to the middle of the mark.
Any craft I was taught as a kid was do it this way and this way only... wellll I cant crochet like everybody else was made to.learn it... I get the same result doing it the way I do it... same with quilting... be it sewing, paper craft etc... Rules to the craft do not work across the board... My daughter is ambidextrious, but dominantly left handed... teaching her how I do things as an ambidextrious person predominantly right handed absolutely proved rules dont apply lol
While in nursing school I always did my math problems differently than they were teaching it. Finally after showing that I got the correct answer doing it my way they allowed me to do it my way. I just couldn’t understand how to do their way.
I have seven cutters and non of them cut the same. I cut up from bottom and non of the cut the same. I get so aggravated. I have bought expensive cutter and am considering the Tim holts trimmer but afraid it won’t work either. I follow everybody tips and tricks and still never seam to get a good cut and I wonder if maybe it could be the card stock not cut straight with I buy it. Does anyone have a card stock that they recommend to be “the best”. Thanks everyone I hope someone else has this problem that can help me with my problem. I am a terminally I’ll cancer patient and can’t continue to keep purchasing trimmer to have them not work.
I had a cheap paper trimmer that never seemed to cut straight. Then, my husband looked at it, after I complained a bunch, and noticed the stop at the top left was not even with the stop at the top right! They were off on the left side by about 1 cm. Ditched that trimmer & bought a better cheap one, but checked for evenness straightaway! Cuts are much better!

I wish I was like this. Making a card stresses me out because I try to be perfect. All of my muscles are sore by the time I finish.
One thing I try to recognize and am so bad about it….. if I get tired STOP. I always think awww just 5 more minutes I can do it. Then I start making mistakes and the 5 become 35 or more. Better to stop and come back to it after resting!
I give myself a time limit and always end up going over by at least an hour 😂
So true!
I so relate to that!!!!😂
One rule I NEVER break is. . . NO liquids on my craft table!
No coffee or any other beverages!
Amen, I ruined a very large bag of crafts finished and ready to be delivered!
I just use a covered container because I sip often.
This is my rule- It’s just paper. Stop saving them. Use them. (But so hard to do hahaha. So many beautiful papers and card stock…)
Great tips!!! I don't always use the rule of odd numbers of embellishments!!! I just go by if it looks good to me. It doesn't always have to be odd❤️
One "rule" I sometimes break is that I've been told to fold to the scored side (bump inside).
Cutting in the direction of the bar is the best rule I’ve learned. Thanks for it. I’ve often wondered WHY is my cut crooked??!!? Not happening so much now 😊❤
I ALWAYS have to have hand sanitizer on my craft table, it saves the messes I make 🤪
I love the idea that you have the die cut "sandwich formulas" on the machine for easy reference!
I use the cutting groove on my paper trimmer to score cardstock instead of pulling out my scoring tool.
I always put some thread through buttons I glue onto a project xx😊
I needed a larger die cut machine, but can’t afford one. I cut one of the DT little self-healing mats to fit my Texture Boutique embosser. Works like a charm!

What kind of ink is best for alcohol inks?
@@tammyste1 I use what Maymay uses. Whenever I'm using alcohol markers for coloring, I use Momento to stamp out my images.
Another way to remember is to say “don’t mix your alcohols.”

AWESOME tip about the cutter. I never would have thought of that. Thank you!
Great info, Maymay! I never break my rule of NOT using my Gingher scissors on paper!

I’m a leftie too ❤ and I think we’ve learned to do things a bit different and don’t even realize it until we see someone right handed do it different. As long as it works right 😊
Interesting. Lefty here too. I use mine sideways apparently lol. I put the cutting part on the bottom. Whatever works!
you have inspired me for years, beginning with the diy cookbook. the quote I remember most is " its only paper"
Amazing Tips- especially with cutting the paper. That can explain why my cards are funny.
Just one small thing the manufacturers of the Gemini state do not use the magnetic plate as a top plate because directly exposing the magnet can destroy the inner workings of the machine. Use the clear or white plates as top. Always cover the magnetic plate.
Most times when crafting I like to just have fun. All tips and tricks have saved me numerous times!

One rule that I have broken that I will never break again…. I will never run an embossing folder backwards through my machine. They do break!

Thank you for the pushing against the stop explanation when cutting. Very helpful. I sometimes fold the score line with the raised score side up instead of on the inside
I have a Vagabond 2. For every time I run a die through I make sure I go forward and then backwards. This way the machine gets even rotations.
The paper-trimmer-rule is great !!!

Very helpful tips ❣️🫶
The "rule" that gets me is which side to score on, fold with score I side or out??? I prefer putting the indent on the inside but notice many don't.
Great advice and great video! Thanks l!❤❤
I have always heard about the 'rule of 3's'. That doesn't work for me. I go with what I like and if I am happy with the way it looks!
Thanks for sharing I really learned something…

Such great ideas and « disclosures! »
I bought that Tim Holts mini snips not realizing it was serrated. Its sharp, comfortable and I wanted to use it for fussy cutting until I saw the jagged edge. Thanks for the tip. Btw what is the purpose of having a serrated scissors?
They are supposed to be sharper than a flat blade because they "saw" through whatever you're cutting. You can cut heavier materials.
Hi, we use these to cut all kinds of material, paper, twine, thicker papers and so on... thanks
My rule is: never craft when I’m tired or rushed. It will never come out neat and perfect.
Ain’t that the truth!
It’s handmade not Hallmark
I don’t know if this is considered breaking a rule but I use 2 cutting plates no matter if I am die-cutting or embossing… I think it’s because it’s easier for me to remember the same “sandwich” instead of multiple ones.
QUESTION...Do you use the lines on your trimmer at all for measuring anything? Will you explain why they are there?
Hi, yes we use the lines on the trimmer to measure where you need to cut the paper, here is a video that may help you ua-cam.com/video/GIGS7gALvx4/v-deo.html
What ink do you use for coloring with markers.
Hi, for water based markers use Versafine, for alcohol markers use Memento
Not cheating…adapting!!!
What do you use the black Tim Holtz scissors for?
Hi we use them to cut thicker materials and to cut things like foam tape
I don't follow the rules anyways, I just have fun. Lol
When it comes to crafting.
I break the rule of 3, 5,7 etc, that things look better in odd numbers.
I never use my ribbon scissors for paper cutting
I don't always use a nesting die to make a mat . I glue the paper on another sheet & use my trimmer to make the mat. 🙄
I would love a video explaining why wonky cuts happen. No matter how hard I try the cuts aren't perfect. Is it me or the trimmer?
Same here.
Ditto .. my cuts are always off by a hair!
I have found that if I slide my paper on the cutter until it just covers the measurement it’s near perfect. If it is a wider measurement mark, I slide to the middle of the mark.
When you score, you are supposed to fold AWAY from the score line
I was always taught to fold away from a score, until I saw Maymay fold into the score, I tried it and the card lays flatter
I just couldn’t understand how to do their way.
a rule I break is using one blending brush to multiple ink pads on the same color family 🫣
