I don't know if this is right, but maybe you can explain it. I can't get my head wrapped around the theory with the larger chords. The only thing I can figure out is that everything works in the context of non-Reimannian theory. I can move one or two notes a half-tone up or down each time to make a new chord that resolves, if I avoid moving either the 3rd and 7th or the root and the fifth. But that seems like I'm cheating, I'm not getting much in the way of options out of that limited algorithm. Can you direct me to a better source for studying what to do next beyond the obvious I IV V or ii V I patterns?
I have the highest respect for MAB, as one of the world's best guitarists, an incredible teacher and just an all round amazing human being. Also, I never thought my first steps into jazz guitar would come from a metal God!
I shouldn't be surprised to see this legend playing jazz, and yet I'm there smiling throughout the video! How many could do the same, with this passion? Thanks Michael, you are a true inspiration.
Stu Pierce was my guitar teacher in Chicago back in the 1980's. He taught me chord melodies. He was a great teacher and guitarist. He also taught Terry Kath of the band Chicago. Boy, I wish he was still with us.
Never judge a book by its cover they say: MAB looks like a metalhead stuck in 1983 but then when you listen to him he's actually a super interesting person. This video is outstanding in my humble opinion.
I first started watching your older lessons here on youtube back when I first picked up a guitar almost 8 years ago back in high school, when all I wanted to be is a shredder! Now all this time later I am studying music at university and am very much interested in jazz licks, chords and phrasing and here I find you again showing me just that. Rock on man!!
I absolutely love how much passion you have for music and have influenced kids like me over all of these years to pick up and play the guitar. I was so fortunate to attend your masterclass in Guwahati, India. Absolutely love the person you are and wish you all the best for the future!
I first saw your playing 10 years ago when I was younger and wanted to play like you. Your passion and love for learning and teaching others is beyond what I’ve seen from others. God bless you and our beloved Midwest
I met Michael about 10 years ago at a music shop in mid-southern Illinois. What a humble and simply down to earth and friendly guy. Gotta be honest, though, this video feels a little like Rob Halford just serenaded me with lullabies lol. It's a little more than out of the expected but, wow, he carries it off with a straight face and that unbreakable seriousness. God bless you, Michael. Rock on and, uh, Jazz on, whatever you wanna do, we're all here for it!
Hi Michael, it is a great pleasure to hear you talk about jazz, chords progressions and the beautiful sound of these chords with such passion and simplicity. Thank you so much.
I now can say you are my teacher!! Just beautiful I love the hint for smooth change.. taking off your hand and going back, that is something I needed (along with every other hint) . Thank you so much.

Last person on earth I would expect to give a jazz lesson! Hopefully, the next lesson will be with a nylon-string guitar on bossa nova rhythms; that would be killer!
Michael, I’m gonna try to jog your memory. You did a guitar clinic for my store (AB Stephens) in Huntsville, Al. many years ago and I introduced you to our local guitar phenom. He was a short little black man who went by the nickname “Spanky” He was an incredible jazz guitarist who seemed to know a thousand chords. You guys got together and played before the clinic and you liked him so much that you got him a Washburn 335 hollowbody and a partial endorsement. Hope you remember. I haven’t seen Spanky in years. Hope you and him are both doing well. Sincerely, Devin
You're such a wonderful guy, Michael, teaching all this stuff in such a simple and clear way for a mediate player like myself to get to understand and showing the way on what's going on in these jazz progressions. i'm sure I'll be watching this video over and over again. Thanks!
wow i never knew you knew jazz and had the perfect sensitivity for it. so many people make it feel like guitar is about abandoning all for one style. thank you so much. you are a legend and a very great teacher. thank you so much.
Michael I do believe you are the world's best teacher of the art. I have purchased your speed kills series and am enjoying it tremendously. You are my teacher. Thank you for your sincerity in each lesson.
I'm not surprised that you're giving a jazz lesson, the pleasant surprise is realizing you could and should do a jazz trio and basically hand all the haters their asses on a paper plate!!! Great playing, lesson and info!
Michael it is truly awesome of you to spend so much time bringing us gifts like this. Thank you so very much for small pieces of happiness in a bleak world.
You are one of my best hero since I was a kid. I saved my lunch money in order to buy your DVD tutorial. Man, I was so excited owning that. Keep on rocking and sharing your talent to younger generations Sir Batio!!!
thank you for putting all your lessons out there for free, I saw you once when you came to my small town Sedalia Missouri at instrumental influence and you killed it. I was fourteen, had no money and I was late to the show and they let me in anyways. I got a associates and finished all the music theory classes working on my bachelors and I learned about augmented 11ths watching this video, they taught augmented 6ths but this was new to me.
The best about Michael Angelo Batio is he's not only a great guitar player our generation have seen but also a great teacher which most of the famous guitar player aren't.
Well I wasn’t expecting that! I have struggled to get my head around Jazz chords but MAB explains it so much clearer than any of the jazz guitarists I follow on UA-cam. Well played sir!

Thank you for this lesson, Michael. I have downloaded your PDF MAB-24 Jazz_Progressions-FreeExcerpt.pdf and wish to challenge a couple of the transcription notes. In Progression 3 the 11th chord (Ab7b5) uses the 6th fret on the G string -- I think it should be the 5th fret instead. In Progression 4 the 4th chord (G13b9) the chord diagram shows the big E string as an A note on the 5th fret whereas the tab shows using the 4th fret which *is* a flatted 9th (Ab). Not trying to be an arse, just thought you might want to know. Thanks, again.
Hi Bill, my original transcription of these Jazz progressions was notated by hand. I wrote them out myself and they were perfect. That was the template for this version. I referenced the PDF to what you said and you are correct on both points. Thanks for your attention to detail. I'm going to notify Metal Method and have them correct this. Now here's a lesson I can sink my teeth into. And it's JAZZ GUITAR FROM A METAL HERO! You can't get any cooler than that. One thing MAB is showing to us loud and clear. You can choose any style you want. But discipline is needed to be good. I need that discipline.
E' una goduria assoluta la tua arte chitarristica e la tua semplicissima didattica di insegnamento , il più grande chitarrista di tutti i tempi non può essere altrimenti , grazie di esistere
GREAT LESSON! esp, the part about taking your hand off the fret board and then returning to form the chord. Simple ideas, but something that is just "assumed" everyone will just be able to do!

Great! Thanks so much Michael!
My pleasure!
Downloaded! Some of those reminds me of Super Mario World progressions from Koji Kondo! So awesome :) Thank you MAB
Glad you like them!
Incredible player and great player and teacher
Thank you Scott! I appreciate you.
GREAT LESSON! esp, the part about taking your hand off the fret board and then returning to form the chord. Simple ideas, but something that is just "assumed" everyone will just be able to do!
Glad it was helpful!
Amazing guitar tone!!!!
