I really like these "Do I Need One" videos. They do a really good job at explaining what the effects do and how to apply one. You asked what we wanted next, and then over a year later, you still haven't put out another one. In a way, you did cover distortion, overdrive, and fuzz in your video about their differences, but you still could go through the science and function of many other pedals -WAH, chorus, flanger, reverb, echo, delay. Some of these may seem common sense and so easy to explain that the audience shouldn't need them, but with how good you are at explaining sound effects, it would be very enlightening.

If you are a guitarist that believes all you need is a guitar and an amplifier and does not seek to exploit other tone possibilities, then you don't need a phaser. However, if you wish to sound WILDER than a purveyor of endless notes and chords with no special craziness, then you need one. We could say that Jimi Hendrix used the Univibe to sound freaky, and then Eddie Van Halen replaced the Univibe with the Phase 90, and then after that we have this debate -- use crazy effects or not? Listen carefully to the way that EVH uses it -- on a few seconds, then off. It changes his sound from his rhythm guitar to a crazy lead sound that stands out and sounds almost like melting metal. I am fine with the purists who just want the amp sound, but many of them seem to arrogantly think that adding effects implies you don't know what you're doing. PS Colin...Have you seen my MXR Phase 90 video, it seems to me you have many of the same ideas.

I love my phase 90. It's hardly a universally essential tool, however it's very useful to have in your arson given how wide the applications are. I mainly use mine for leads not just because it helps them pop out as Colin said, but the swirling boost and cutting of treble that the pedal gives makes the picking attack a little bit easier and less pronounced.

I went into a guitar shop just to try out some pedals and the guy who worked there came in and told me i needed a phaser so i could rub my hand on the strings to sound like Van Halen, in addition to saying that i cant use a Telecaster for rock and metal. I'm one of those guys who has a really hard time with multi-effects because of a few reasons..
    1. I like chorus, phaser and flanger BEFORE distortion or amp, however you look at it.
    2. I like reverb and delay AFTER distortion or in fx loop.
Which is why I need individual pedals and 2 different loops or a better (also read more expensive) multi-fx unit.
Thank you for this video, I really liked it.

The (former) Visual Sound Oil Can is the only pedal from that brand that I still use. I'm not sure if it's still available, but it's from their Garagetone line. It's actually a sound apart from the ubiquitous MXR offerings, has it's own flavor, as it was modeled after an Electra phaser from decades ago. Very much recommend it. I grabbed mine for 60 dollars new 4 years ago.

I always enjoy your informative straight forward videos. It's about time someone really explains how phasers work. From a musical stand point, if you play Funk/R&B music you really want an aggressive phaser ( Mutron ll, Small Stone, Boss PH-2). Makes the girlies want to Shiek their booties. IMO , Rock guys generally go for MRX phase 90's. They work well with distortion. I have four phasers but I think I need another one. Hmmm........

Phasers are cool man, I prefer after distortion so you get more of a swoosh going on. Phase has always been one of my favorite effects since the beginning of my guitar playing days .....

The other day, I went to a music store and when I looked at the Gibson Les Pauls, the more recent ones, I noticed that they all had those knobs that you can pull and push to split the coils. Can you talk about that? Not necessarily the Les Pauls but in general, the difference between single coils and humbuckers, when to use them and when do they sound best (clean, crunch, distorted, adding FX). That would be sweet! Thanks!
