  • Welcome to my UA-cam channel. This channel is the home for all your vintage Mid-Year Corvette content.
    I just finished restoring a 1963 Corvette Split Window and I am starting another split window build but this time its a race car build. I will be making videos every Friday. I will be making videos on my 1963 Corvette Split Window, my dad's 1965 Corvette, my race car split window build, my friends 1960 Corvette, and other projects that I find along the way. Let me know what you think about the video. Enjoy!!
    If you are interested in an official MYM hat or if you have any questions please send me an email to midyearmitch@gmail.com.
    Check out my Instagram for some behind the scenes pics of my builds.

    Hey there Mitch,
    Something doesn't make sense ... you get strong inductive signal at the coil wire, but not at the plug wires. That has to mean the current is going to ground somewhere in between (distributor, cap, etc). If it is not a strong signal at the coil wire, then for sure I would say bad engine ground to chassis.
    Anyway, it's frustrating, I know. (from someone who has been working on irritating old cars for 50-ish years)
    Take care,
    Dan

    Wow, Mitch! What a dilemma! I'm not even gonna try to guess or recommend anything to try to get that motor running, because you've already covered all the procedures I would try. This is a time where you cut your losses and refer the car to someone with more esoteric experience. I've referred hundreds of difficult cases to specialists so I could get a proper working diagnosis. This '65's case is no different! Thanks for your candor and pure honesty! You are a refreshing oasis in the youtube desert of egotism! Great video! A+++++

    Get rid of that aftermarket dist & put in a GM HEI with the coil in the cap. Use one from the 70s without any computer hookups. These do not use a resistor so bypass that. Problem solved.

    Many point conversion kits for the points distributor need full 12 volts (no ballast resistor) to the coil when running. Most people will run a hot wire from the IGN connection from the fuse box to the coil. The Petronix III needs full 12 volts. Not sure what conversion kit you're using. Having said all this, when the starter is cranking it should be getting full 12 V and the motor should kick pretty good or even start. Good luck.

    The person getting Centerfield is a very fortunate person. It will be a fun build to do, you have done all the required ground work. So what if it doesnt want to fire up. It will. And you are right about not knowing everything, in the words of the late great Davey Allison, " No matter how good or how fast you think you are, there is always someone out there who is doing it a little better and going a little faster." Mitch the car looks great and all the extra parts? Wow! Yep a fun build. Take care stay safe.

    Years ago I had a '75 and did a frame on restoration. In the process I ran into a 4 or 6 gauge wire that had been added to the negative battery terminal and it went through the wall of the battery box and was attached to the frame close by. I never gave it a second thought but I left it there thinking there was probably a good reason for it. I remember in taking out the engine and trans there was a ground strap between the block and frame so maybe my car had a ground problem at one time with a previous. owner. I sure you and your dad went thru your problem thoroughly but it sure sounds like a partial ground issue. An ohmmeter between the negative battery terminal and the block should tell that story.

    Don't send it off, it will bug you forever not solving. Relax, grab a beer, take a vacation weekend off. Guys below say it right. Swap out the distributor from a working car to eliminate the mystery part setup. Include swapping your plug wires. The ground wire is not grounding the engine enough. Run a separate ground wire there. Spark, fuel, air, compression. You are going to find out something silly like a forgotten washer or spacer causing spark to not get there cleanly. Call a friend to come over for some free beer.

    Replacement parts for anything but especially older stuff can be a bit crap. You're still setting him up in an awesome project to finish.

    Replace the distributor with a "KNOW GOOD UNIT" like out of another running car. Hot wire from battery to coil, ground from battery to block. I assume you did compression check. Cam timing could be the issue. Good luck.

    Strange problem Mitch..Did you check to see if there's a voltage drop to the coil when the starter is engaged? I've seen a similar problem when the ballast resistor bypass wire is not correct, but maybe you checked that also..at any rate I wish you were closer to do the fiberglass work on my 1956 vette..I feel like I'm in over my head on this one!

    I had an engine that kept burning up one spark plug wire. The wire would crumble to pieces in one spot. Replaced the wire several times. Failed. Replaced wire and plug. Failed. Replaced HEI parts. Failed. Replace whole distributor & internals, all new wires and plugs, rerouted the wires. Failed. That mystery still haunts me.

    Hi Mitch. Sad to hear that you give up the project because of a ignition problem!. Anyhow cars comes and goes. Have you tried and tested with a known working distributor and coil, from a car that is running fine. Never be afraid to ask professional people, there is tons of guys out there who know the procedures to faultfinding these issues. Also on youtube you get loads of vids on these, ex check "MSD performance ignition" one of many. All the best from 64-Vette 327 man.

  • @scott357
    @scott357 6 місяців тому +1

    When I saw the rotor to cap contact point, thats wrong. That contact point on the rotor should be in the middle of the contact point on the cap. The shaft movement up and down is causing some of your problems. In other words the spark is really jumping a big gap twice and probably overheating the coil. Also by pass the resistor block and run on full 12 volts. Did you ohm the resistance in the coil itself?

    • @kennydemartini2169
      @kennydemartini2169 6 місяців тому +2

      I was thinking the same thing. I'm also wondering if there is a resistor wire powering the distributor along with that resistor block. That would really kill the voltage. Is the resistor wire from the starter solenoid that sends 12 volts while cranking hooked up?
