  • An episode from the rather obscure TV suspense anthology series, PANIC! (aka NO WARNING), which originally aired in 1957-58 on NBC.
The series plays somewhat like a hybrid of ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS (ordinary people thrust into harrowing, life-or-death situations... either murder plots, bad luck or natural disasters) and DRAGNET (dry, methodical narration, with an emphasis on the story being "true" and attention to time and place).
The narrator is Westbrook Van Voorhis, known as the voice of the MARCH OF TIME radio show (1931-1945) and newsreel series (1935-1951), and was the original choice to host THE TWILIGHT ZONE, before series creator Rod Serling stepped in (a wise choice).
This episode, "Subway", stars Eduard Franz (seen in such films as THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD ('51), THE TEN COMMANDMENTS ('56), THE FOUR SKULLS OF JONATHAN DRAKE ('59) and THE PRESIDENT'S ANALYST ('67), and a frequent TV guest star), Barbara Billingsley (Wally & Beaver's mom on LEAVE IT TO BEAVER and the jive-fluent airline passenger in AIRPLANE! ('80)), perennial movie/TV tough guys John Doucette and Frank Richards as the two thugs, and as The Law: Anthony Warde (who played lots of police detectives, as well as the villain "Killer Kane" in the 1939 movie serial version of BUCK ROGERS) and Mort Mills (best known as the highway cop who follows Janet Leigh in the first act of Alfred Hitchcock's PSYCHO ('60)).

Didn't realize watching the episode, however, Mrs. Mason was actually June Cleaver from Leave It to Beaver.

I remember detective (Mort Mills) in many old westerns of the time, and the crook aka the police clerk (John Doucette) in westerns and the Superman tv series.

When you see him entering the station, it is the Chambers St, station and the train entering is an R16 subway train with florescent lights and the second scene of an R9 subway train, and the 3rd is an BMT STANDARD subway train with 2 upper and lower windows on each door. I am a New Yorker.

Did I miss something? Closing scene: “Trust the police next time”… “I will!”
But wasn’t it the police clerk who was the killer hunting him?

Not only that, but the man would be as good as dead anyway, just like the dead witness he saw in the train. There would be no next time.

Yes, it was. But, as it turns out, the police suspected the police clerk all along -- and that's why they had the clerk under surveillance and were able to stop him when he returned to "finish the job."

At 14:40 when Mr. Mason goes to get a drink, there is a picture of something on the wall on the top left of the screen. See it there? Can anyone tell me what it is? I can’t figure it out. I don’t think it has anything to do with the plot, but what is it?
