Darjeeling Himalayan Railways (DHR) toy train is declared as world heritage by UNESCO on 5th December 1999. The most popular joy ride is a round trip between Darjeeling-Ghoom-Darjeeling by steam engine or diese engine trains, which takes approximately 2 hours for the entire journey. It passes through Batasia loop and halt their for 10 minutes. Then it reaches Ghoom station where again it halts for 20 to 30 min. In ghoom you can visit the rail museum and also click beautiful pics at Ghoom station area.

And yes, in packages mostly they will not tell much. Their main aim will be to put you on a toy train ride as per their time schedule. That's it.
Making a tour plan is not a very big rocket science. So I believe it's always better to get some knowledge about the place first and then go and explore it by own. Then only you will feel the real fun🙂👍🏼.

Ok if you want a nice chill and foggy weather then try to visit during first or second week of February.
Or if you both like to beat the summer of your city and want to spend some cool time in hill station, then April, May, June is the correct time. During this time sky will be clear and temperature will be moderate cool in Darjeeling.

Bhaiya toy train mein general coach hote hain mtlb unreserved coaches ??

In Darjeeling toy train the coaches are not unreserved. You have to do a reservation and then only you can board the toy train.
But reservation can be done in two ways. First is online booking via IRCTC. And secondly there is a reservation counter in Darjeeling station, from where you can do on the spot current booking or advance booking before one or two days.
But current booking availability will be very less most of the time. So it is recommended to book online only.

Are both the coaches from the 'Joy Ride Vista' Vista Dome Coaches? Which one out of the two coaches carries the toilet? Because IRCTC online is not showing the any option to choose any coach..

In Vista dome train both the coaches are of vista dome model.
And it's a small route train which runs between Darjeeling and ghum and the travel time is almost less than 2 hours, so there is no toilet facility inside the train coach.
But anyhow the train halts for almost 10 to 15 minutes in batasia loop and almost for half an hour is Ghum station area where you will find toilets. So you will not face any problem in this ride even if you don't get onboard toilet facilities in the train coach.

how much early do you recommended to book traIn ticket from NJP TO DJ? I'm planning to have a journey on 1st Oct before dashara? so when shall i issue a ticket?
Hi Niraj,
If you are planning before Dashara then it will be a peak time. So if your dates are fixed then I recommend you to book before 120 days of your travel (when IRCTC seats gets open). that will be a best way to secure your sets if your travel dates are confirmed.

While booking diesel toy train, what is coupe cabin lower and upper?
For a ride between Darjeeling and Ghoom you can get steam and Diesel engine toy trains but the Class is only FC.
I can't see any coupe class there..
If possible you can mention the train number.. I can check the same and update you.

can we carry luggage in joy ride train ?
Hi Anurag,
There is no such rule in joy ride train that you cannot take luggage. But the problem is that these trains have such a narrow passage and so less leg space that you cannot keep any big luggage below your seat or on the passage. So if your luggage is small or you can adjust your luggage somewhere without disturbing the passengers, then you can take you luggage.

Yes, NJP to Darjeeling toy train is running now.
You can do bookings easily from IRCTC website.
But if you want to travel on 7th May from NJP then it's too short time. You will not get available seat. Everything will be on waiting list.
I can give you a better idea if you want to take this toy train journey. Go for this toy train during your return journey from Darjeeling to NJP on May be 10th or 11th. Because everyone takes the NJP to Darjeeling train only. Very rarely people take this toy train during returning. So you will get available seat during returning. even if you get waiting list no. 1 or 2, please go for it. it will get mostly confirmed during return journey.

Hi Akshay,
Yes currently bookings are open in IRCTC for Vistadome Steam Engine Joyrides. But train no. 52594 mentioned by you is a steam engine ride WITHOUT vistadome coach.
If you want vistadome steam engine ride, then in IRCTC you have to select train no. 52544 or train no. 52598.

Train mein cabin aur coupe alag alag kya hai
In the joy train you get only first class (FC) or chair car (CC) seating option. There is no cabin or Coupe in the Darjeeling route train.
But in general express or mail trains, in the first class cabins you get two options. One is the normal cabin with 4 berths together in one area. And another is the coupe cabin which has only two berths in a closed cabin area (its also known as couple cabin).

Here is an approximate brakup cost I made for your reference.
Below cost is for two person travelling for three days:-
Siliguri to Darjeeling by share jeep 250+250=500
Hotel stay for three days 1500x3=4500
Food per day 1000x3=3000
Bike rental for one day=1000
Toy train Joy ride 1000x2=2000
Other expenses =2000
So total expense for two person will be approximately around 12000 to 13000 for Darjeeling tour of 3 days.

The train has very less space in between seats and passage.
So you can carry a little bit of luggage but you have to keep it near the doors of the toy train which may be a matter of objection from other passengers.

First of all thank you for raising this query..!!
Earlier (before COVID) there were some more passanger trains running between Kurseong-Darjeeling and few other routes. In those trains there were options to book tickets between Ghum and Darjeeling.
But currently only Darjeeling-Ghoom-Darjeeling Joy ride round trip bookings are only available.
And another route is opened from NJP to Darjeeling. So currently you will not get one way single journey tickets from Ghoom to Darjeeling. You have to go for atleast the diesel engine joyride, which has the cheapest ticket fare among all routes which are currently open.

What is the difference between FC (Rs 1400) and CC (Rs1500) in NJP to Darjeeling train. Is CC Ac vistadome coach?
Frankly saying, I also don't know the answer for this question Kumar...
Only Indian Railways can answer this.🤗
The FC coach is neither having vistadome nor any other additional facilities compared to CC coach.
Also can you imagine FC coaches even don't have air-conditioning in it. Still chargers are similar to CC coaches. Really don't know what is Indian Railways main logic behind this ????
May be one advantage of these coaches are, generally people will not book this coaches, so if at last moment any passenger want to take this train then they can get these seats by paying this big amount for no reason.. Really not sure about logic behind this.
