    Cool design Rob! You could also use the half square triangles for a bed runner.

    I really appreciate that you quilted it simple in order to honor, a time and theme era. There is an amazing award winning African American group of quilters from a remote area of Alabama called the Gee's Bend quilters. Your quilt reminded me of their natural approach to quilting and the all over roots of quilts. With all our modern technology in sewing today, you stepped back and reminded me where quilts came from. Thank You,
    Karen Sides

      Karen Sides, just to brag a bit, but I have been blessed to have a few meals and fellowship with about six of the women from Gees Bend. They have come to Sisters, Oregon twice when I was there too. They are wonderful women!

    I like the simplicity of the quilting. I do not like the dense quilting that is more common with free motion quilters...one, it takes forever to complete and, two, as you noted, it doesn't produce the cozy comfort of a quilt with less quilting. I also like that this pattern can be "manly" while still being beautiful.

    Hi Rob. Was looking for a quilt design for son-in-laws. This is the one. Thank you. I do have a technical question for you if you have a minute. What function does the presser foot pressure provide on a machine? I've had multiple machines that didn't allow changes to the foot. My Juki does allow me to change the pressure and I changed it without checking original setting. I don't know what to look for in able to find the best setting. My guess is it helps feed the fabric evenly but that is just a guess. I hope this make some kind of sense. Love your maintenance videos. You are only person I have watched that doesn't get so technical they leave me trying to understand them.

    and there is an idea, what to do with my grandmothers blue shirt fabric (she worked in a factory, and collected the precut shirt parts that were otherwise shredded) and the brown bedsheets that are from my father in law, who recently passend.
    this is the perfect color combination. some cutting squares first, but that is the original idea, so I run with it.

    I really like the pieced bit and the overall design. I think it has a modern feel which I like. I do however, think it would benefit with a bit more quilting. The quilt looks a bit saggy. One question though. By making the hst this way, is the bias a problem to work with?

    • @ManSewingVids
      @ManSewingVids  7 років тому

      Hi, Zeba! The bias gives you enough flexibility to nest all of your seams so your piecing looks accurate.

    Unfortunately, the featured charm pack (Artisan Batiks - Texture Study 3 Charm Pack by Lunn Studios) in the supplies link doesn't have nearly as much light fabrics in it as the display project requires. There are way too many dark and mid tones and larger scale prints to give you the high contrast to make this design work. I'm really disappointed with the results I got.

    Rob, I have been looking for a pattern I like and have a Jelly Roll I want to use. Ok so you know what I am going to ask. Can I use a Jelly Roll to make this quilt? Need some clarification on how to cut. :-). Thank you!!

    • @pooie0116
      @pooie0116 6 років тому

      You can totally do it with pre-cut strips!1. Match a light strip with a dark strip, right-sides together.2. Sew the strips together all the way down on BOTH sides to make a narrow two strip tube.3. Cut the strip tube diagonally at 45 degree angles, alternating the direction of your ruler as you go so that you wind up with a whole row of triangles all down the length of your strip tube.4. There should be a couple stitches holding the top of each triangle closed. Just pick out those little bits of thread and open the triangle and voila! a whole bunch of half square triangles from each strip tube :)

    This is great. have you ever made a quilt using men ties?

    • @ryoungatlmidotnet
      @ryoungatlmidotnet 7 років тому

      Rob will probably chime it, but from my experience, it can be done, but that stuff (at least the silk) is TREACHEROUS. Slick. The jacquard woven fabric is not very dimensionally stable. Not for beginners...

      When i use ties i fusd very light stabiliser to the back of the tie then trim to the desired width. Easier to cut and sew.
