    70km/h is much speed even for modern cars.

    The car that hit the stationary car, did quite well regarding structure. Cabin & A-pillar looks quite good. I think that some of the tincan cars from the 80's would do worse.
    On the other hand, the side of the car that got hit, was very soft, and probably absorbed much of the energy.

      Yes, especially as it was hit on the sturdiest part (torpedo pillar).

      Es que no tenían refuerzo lateral y los ingenieros se enfocaban más en la absorción de trompa y cola, con esos test que hacian es que veían los errores de fabricación y los iban corrigiendo, año a año, modelo a modelo los autos fueron cada vez más seguros

    Side protection during a crash was not yet a real thing. No reinforced A and B pillars, no bars inside of the doors, or a real solid floor sill. Peugeot 504 was solid in other aspects like durability and sturdiness in African roads. Still thousands of them running there to this day.

    74 kph / 46 mph is a lot even for a modern car, but Peugeot 504s are death traps even by 1970s standards. Look at the NHTSA full front crash test.

    Its look like a Volvo's "real life" crash test number 0330831 S80 Vs S60 😮

    This are older used cars from before '73, the stationary 504 was even one of the first ('68/'69) with the rare one model year only steering wheel.
    Peugeot was a brand that in the 1960's really did research a new cars safety with crash tests and designed crumple zones front and back to protect the cabin. It's clearly visible and comparable with old pictures made by Peugeot after crash tests.
    Side impact safety wasn't the most important for some reason, but it was common with a lot of, at least European, vehicles up to the 2000's to be unsafe in side (and other) collisions.
    I think the 1995 406 was the first Peugeot with effective side impact absorption in the doors and depending on the version equipped with side airbags.

      I see that one of the cars have the flush mounted door handles, when did they appear?

    • @Peusgek
      @Peusgek Місяць тому

      @@mattiasjohansson1727 I didn't notice that! And i think the change was made around 1974 or 1975 so the footage must be newer than 1973. The reason to change them was the old style door handles with a push button could be pushed in in a crash, especially in roll overs, so the door could pop open. The flat ones prevented this.

      Depende el país, en Francia la manija de botón que sobresalía que era la misma del 404 se dejo de usar en el restilling de 1971

    Peugeot 504 was very robust car, I don't know how much safe, only Rover SD1 (3500 V8) and SAAB 99 / 900 was rather safe cars in the 70s (in the world i think)

    The situation is not too much changed in 50 years... Today there are many side bars but at 70 kmh...
