Thank you very much for the kind shout out, Tom! Looking forward to see how you put your Mestastic nodes to use, and how you get others involved to for a mesh network in your area. I did some range testing this weekend with my T-Echo and came to the same conclusion. It's a great device that could use a better antenna.
I would like to do a good line of site test with no obstructions. That might be hard to do with no good lakes or mountains around me. Maybe do a .5 mile unobstructed and .5 through forest and see what the signal strength change is.
I have yet to see someone do a quad drone test for range. Where I live it's hilly. It could be an interesting way of creating your own mountain top experience.
Andy Kirby just did it on his channel. ua-cam.com/video/qh_lI7qrJsA/v-deo.htmlsi=akSexSzkqW7MVPJe Check out the website www.heywhatsthat.com/ You can put in your location and see what the coverage would be like. US drone limit is 400 feet above ground so you still need some good elevation.
I got this one, which was recommended by other meshtastic users, it is for the 915MHz range. github.com/RicInNewMexico/Meshtastic-Antenna-Reports/blob/main/PDFs/ANT-916-CW-HW-SMA.pdf
For Meshtastic it is 158 miles according to the website. Realistically most of use will never see anywhere close that. I got 2 miles, but that was high hill to high hill. Everything in between I was out of contact. Terrain is a big determining factor.
This is very interesting. I'm looking forward to more from you and Scout on this.

Happy New Years! Interesting devices…
Hey! Great video. What's the upgraded antenna model you mention?

My lilygo says it shipped.
I have another circuit board coming so I can build a weather resistant and solar powered one for outside.
World record is over 500 miles
