It was a far worse day for trust in British Politics when David Cameron broke his promise immediately to serve Art 50 Notice should we vote to leave the EU, thereby triggering years of infighting in the Tory party and installing the useless Mrs May as PM.
Treasury Minister Tulip Siddiq has this week confirmed that Britain has already paid the EU 23.8 billion pounds as part of the Brexit “financial settlement” agreement, with a further 6.4 billion still be paid to the bloc to settle the UK’s pre-existing pre-Brexit financial obligations. That’s a total direct, measurable and indisputable cost of Brexit to the British taxpayer exceeding 30 billion pounds. So just this one direct cost of Brexit is in the same ballpark as Rachel Reeve’s entire fiscal black hole. In other words, there would be no black hole if there had been no Brexit. And that comes nowhere near revealing the true wider costs of Brexit which include the billions of pounds lost to the British economy through Brexit’s impact on trade, and the free movement of people.
If the tories are saying it's a bad budget, then I'm very very optimistic for the future. Yes, the tories dragged us a long way down but with them gone, the only way is up
Down? Like the recovery they put in place from the last recession left by a Labour government. Down? like all the handouts during COVID to keep people going.
Bad budget for Tories. The budget did everything they said they were going to - close rich people's loopholes. Benefit normal people. What Tories call "normal families" means people with generational wealth. Rich people. People with 2 properties. People with horses. People with a few cars. People who go on 5 star long haul holidays. People with stock market investments. Tories are ANNOYED that they've been outclassed.
But working class people have a property portfolio, their tax bill could rise by millions. They might have to sell one of their holiday mansions. I earn more than double the national average and there's nothing in this budget that will effect me.

@@davelee8856 It's been confirmed in the OBR report. The report isn't exactly positive about Labour's budget but it does confirm that the £22bn black hole is real
The biggest thing to note about this is the reaction of the markets compared to how the markets reacted to previous Tory budgets, particularly the Truss budget. No collapse in the value of sterling no, no rocketing of Government borrowing costs, no closing the door to lend money to the UK, no intervention to prevent pension funds collapsing after UK debt bonds became worthless overnight and the reason for that is in the DETAIL of the budget. Labour is aiming to return the UK to budget surplus in daily expenditure by 2027/28, ending the perpetual Tory borrowing spree, and borrowing money only for investment in infrastructure. This is what "living within your means" looks like. For comparison in 2010 the UK and Germany had comparable debt to GDP ratios, now ours is almost double that of Germany after years of reckless Tory borrowing and one reason for that is that for most of the last 14 years Germany ran a budget surplus in daily expenditure.
I am a lawyer and due to serious illness I had time to watch the Leveson Inquiry. I was genuinely amazed that Hunt's political career lasted for a minute after he completed his evidence.
He was useless as NHS Secretary for State and every other job he's done! Sunak went to the country because they didn't want to increase taxes and had no idea how to get them out of the mess they'd got the country into!
Hunt was one of the better ones. Maybe our public services wouldn't be so stretched if we didnt have to foot the illegal migration costs - its only going to get worse.
It's incredibly astounding that there seems to be general agreement between both parties about the Aug 2024 budgeting decisions, however that a real gripe was lack of decision on welfare capping. To implement welfare caps right on the back of deep levels of strain on families (as a result of the pandemic, cost of living crisis, NHS crisis (where waiting lists seem everlasting), people struggling to get doctors appointments/be seen in A&E within reasonable timeframes and are still waiting for mental health intervention) is inhumane. How would people survive until the economy grows as predicted. Where is the grace period coming out of these trenches. It is right to give some time before tackling return to work for those deemed the most vulnerable.
90% of that is paid to people who are in work so effectively subsidising employers paying inadequate wages. UK wages have been stagnant for 20 years(under Labour and tories) and have fallen well behind countries we used to have pay equality with such as Germany, France and Australia
Tories are in no position to criticize anything
"Very bad for trust in politics" he says. The 14 years of the Tories decimated all trust for politicians.
