  • In this video I'm comparing Sony 35mm f/1.4 GM lens in APS-C mode to a Sony 50mm f/1.2 GM and Sony 55mm f/1.8. APS-C mode in modern, higher megapixel cameras can basically give you 2 lenses from a 1 lens :) So you can turn your 35mm lens into a 50mm lens. But how will it compare to an actual 50mm lens - let's find out!

I totally love the look of 35 1.4 and 50 1.2, so your setup makes sense to me, but I cannot justify having so similar focal lenghts. Plus I doubt any of my wedding clientes could tell the difference of bokeh. So Im forced to choose one. My pick is the 35, only because is more versatile.

  • @kifley19

I prefer the 35mm 1.4 GM because it's more versatile. With the focus breathing and crop mode, you get can a tighter focal length.

Great comparison. I own both and will keep both since they are so flexible. The 50/1.2 is marvelous in crop mode as a 75/1.8. Perfect for tighter portraits when you don’t have an 85mm.

Thanks for this comparison! I am going to be picking up the 35 gm at some point this year and seeing the versatility of the lens is great. I think the 50mm is gorgeous but as a professional hybrid video/photo shooter, it's just so nice to be able to have a wide 35 that I can punch in as a 50 in video mode. A 50 is just far too "zoomed in" in apsc mode for run and gun work like I do so having the 35mm is really like having both lenses... I will regret not having that dreamy1.2 bokeh but in the end, the clients probably won't notice the difference too much.

My Friend, I know this is a very old video, but how about a comparison of the 1.2 full frame to a 1.2 crop??? And possible up against a 0.95???
    Then maybe a 0.95 shootout???

I just jumped into mirrorless and into Full Frame world and swapped from a Nikon D500 into Sony world with the a7IV - all at once! And I was literally just buying a 35 1.4 and 85 1.4 and contemplating getting a 50 1.2 but I didn't want to dish out that much money at once/in a single month, so I just bought the 35 and 85. Tried the 35 on APSC mode and I liked it! Also Sony Eye/Face AF is god damn amazing!!! I love it!

Thanks for this - although to be honest I had to take a good look at the images to notice the differences properly - surprising as I thought at 1.2 there would be a much more defocussed foreground and background than there was.

    • @AR-vf7vg
      @AR-vf7vg 2 роки тому

But... if the samples where donne as a sales pitch specifically to sell the f1.2 50mm; I'm convinced that most compelling differences could have been created (wile remaining honest) in favor of the f1.2 of the 50.
But I "agree".. the first image here (where only the 50's result on monitor is zoomed in to "show/proove the "creamy rendering" makes me actually even doubt that these results, this sequence, has no mistake somewhere. At least there I don't agree that the difference is "visible", at all (even knowing I'm watching only on a smartphone).
(BTW; the "lenscompensations turned off" thing is presented as a smart act and of virtue - presumptions that in my opinion deserved much more attention.
However it's really an excellent video to justify the expenses for the 35 for the (true) amateur (with a cheaper 35 he would need a cheap 50 to match it at f 2.8 for the same total expense. Lol.)

Thanks for doing these videos comparing the crop mode vs full frame field of view. Something you mentioned in the 24 crop vs 35 ff video was that you cant uncrop, the raw data is gone. I noticed this as a tiny negative too, and even though I do use crop for quick extra reach for primes, I also noticed that if I turn on square aspect ratio on my A9 the jpg and viewfinder view is square and "cropped", but it does not erase that data from the raw file, so even though I have the same width as if I used crop mode, I can get a wider view from the raw if I need to reframe it. I know square aspect ratio is different for composition but it's interesting as you can preview your crop, but later crop it less or crop to vertical 2:3 or horizontal 3:2 if you need, and the end resolution is the same as if we used crop mode. More control, if needed, but more storage and processing.

From years of experience, 35mm is much more versatile. If I could take only one prime, it would be a 35/1.4. If you want less DOF you can always move a bit closer to the subject, yes there is more distortion, but acceptable. But in tight spaces, interiour portraits, street photography etc. you often cannot move more far away. You should compare, how both look wide open with the same field of view, both uncropped on a fullframe, just different distance from the subject. It would look much more similar IMHO.

Zawsze byłem fanem zestawu 24mm + 85mm, ale kilka dni temu kupiłem 50mm 1.2 i trochę mi ten obiektyw namieszał w głowie. Próbowałem wrzucić go w najtrudniejsze sytuacje z ogromnym kontekstem i bardzo krzaczastym tłem.

Heyhey, thank you very much for the comparison, i just subscribed. I am wondering if there would be a sense in comparing the same way the 50mm f/1.2 cropped to the 85mm f/1.4 GM. I just sold my 85mm f/1.4 GM and decided to use my telephoto zoom from the 70mm+ range in general, but considering to get the 50mm GM f/1.2 now to somewhat regain what the 85mm f/1.4 GM had to offer in terms of dreaminess with the flexibility of switching between a wider 50mm and a more close portraitish 75mm.

I’m glad you like it! Yeah, 50GM in aps-c mode should give 77/1.8 equivalent, so close to 85, but more 1.8, which for most cases might be enough. You can probably end up with the same thoughts / decisions to make as with 35 and 50. Unless Sony comes up with 85/1.2 !

    Cheers! Thnx for interesting perspective.

I have previously owned 85mm.f.1.4, but sold it when I felt it was too heavy to lug around with my other lenses, as I try to make my kit as light as possible without compromising on quality, but with the lenses 24mm.f.1.4 GM and 35mm.f.1.4 GM I have now made my kit less heavy, so there should now be room for 85mm.f.1.4 GM .....

The "lens-compensations turned off" thing is presented as a smart act and of virtue - with presumptions that in my opinion deserved much more attention.
(I turn them on in camera (viewfinder, monitor playback, (and video), to not have bad surprises when I choose to dial them in wile processing my raw files (I never produce Jpegs).
I have different doubts at the first scene where only the 50' is engaged at the monitor in LR's compare mode. It does absolutely not highlight there as claimed (why?), a striking difference to the 35. I dont see it.
However it's really an excellent video to justify the expenses for the 35 for the (true) amateur. (Since with a cheaper 35 he would need a cheap 50 to match it at f 2.8 - the same total expense.lol. In this case, with (if) that budget, go with the 35 GM)
One could 'quiet easily', without cheating, make/find many results made with the 50 that, I'm still very confident, the 35 could strikingly not match. However this video does show that for "simple" aproches, this comparison is sronishingly doable.
