    My dad graduated Cal in 1966 and taught me this song as a child. I can still sing the entire thing and am teaching it to my four year old! As my dad passed many years ago, it's one of the only things I have left of him. He was a huge Bears fan and adored this song. So nice to see a modern rendition!

      My dad graduated from UC in 1950, was in the Glee Club and was a founding member of the UC men's octet. (My mom played piano for the Glee Club - that's how they met!) I, too, grew up singing this song all the time (especially in the car on road trips) even though my parents were tee-totalers and never even drank a beer or glass of wine! LOVE IT!! I'm now re-writing it to be "kid friendly" and teach English to students in Japan. What a trip that will be!

    My dad graduated Cal in the early 60s. He and my mother now both have dementia, but can sing this word for word every time that I see them. Lol its hilarious.

    Both of my parents went to Berkeley. I kid you not when I say that this was my lullaby when I was a small child.

    Oh, they had a little party down in Newport;
    There was Harry, there was Mary, there was Grace.
    Oh, they had a little party down in Newport,
    And they had to carry Harry from the place.
    Oh, they had to carry Harry to the ferry,
    And the ferry carried Harry to the shore;
    And the reason that they had to carry Harry to the ferry
    Was that Harry couldn't carry any more.
    For California, for California,
    The hills send back the cry,
    We're out to do or die,
    For California, for California,
    We'll win the game or know the reason why.
    And when the game is over,
    We will buy a keg of booze,
    And drink to California
    'till we wobble in our shoes.
    So drink, tra la la,
    Drink, tra la la,
    Drink, drank, drunk last night,
    Drunk the night before;
    And I'm gonna get drunk tonight
    Like I never got drunk before;
    For when I'm blitzed, I'm as happy as can be
    For I am member of the Souse family.
    Now the Souse family is the best family
    That ever came over from old Germany.
    There's the Highland Dutch, and the Lowland Dutch,
    The Rotterdam Dutch, and the Irish.
    Sing glorious, victorious,
    One keg of beer for the four of us.
    Sing glory be to God that there are no more of us,
    For one of us could drink it all alone. Damn near.
    Here's to the Irish, dead drunk.
    The lucky stiffs, they had 4 fifths
    and a sixpack too, of Irish brew
    and there was grandma swingin on the outhouse door
    without her nightie and grandpa yellin
    more more more, for she was nude.

    My mom was a 1932 UCLA grad, first date with my dad to Balboa where illegal booze and slot machines abounded. She taught me this song when I was 5, and I did the same with my kids. I was a UCSB grad. After games the entire stadium hooked arms and sang the song, swaying together with the singing. Every student was required to know it. The UC chancellors, in an effort to suppress student intoxication, completely failed in that but were only able to kill the drinking song. Few UC students know it today.

    So cool! I grew up in Orinda and learned the Cal Drinking Song in Boy Scouts. I had no idea of its significance until after I was accepted to Cal. Great song for Boy Scouts, eh? "For one of us could drink it all alone. Damn near."

    My Father taught us this song to sing together on road trips back in the 60s and 70s (Mom, Dad and 5 children). He graduated from Cal with a BSCE in 1952.

    I love the Asian Bears participating in the Drinking Song, as we all know they would be the first to pass out.
