I remember when you could get that same configuration for under 20k with dealer incentives and rebates.
38g for that truck is a slap in the face but hey least it's a 4x4.
@@mathewpennington7049 - Holy shirt! 38K for a base model!?!?!?
I miss the pre-Obiden days.
Haha yup! I paid 21,500 for essentially the same truck with the 4.7 in 2011. Ridiculous. I can’t see myself ever buying another new truck.
That’s what I paid for a 2007 1 ton SRW crew cab long bed SLT Duramax 4wd that was fully loaded. Am I really this old? Dang!
Something I'd love to see - "The Battle of the Base Models". So many channels focus on comparing decked out vehicles, which is fine, but not everyone can afford these trim levels. I am assigned a basic 4x4 truck for work which gets replaced every handful of years. I've found that the Fords I've gotten have felt most fitting of the "poverty spec" nickname that we use, especially considering that they are missing features that GM and Ram include with their trucks as standard equipment. A comparison of each manufacturer's basic 4x4 trucks would be pretty cool.
Since most reviewers (all of them ?) don't own the trucks (manufacturer does) they can only test what they are given for a couple of days, Manufacturers typically are in the business to make money, they make that $$ on trinkets and gadgets that the higher trims have so they showcase them.
I’d agree too.
I'd dig that. My work also assigned me a poverty spec Ford; a 2017 F-150 XL. The features in the Ram in this video make it a luxury ride by comparison. 🥲
Was thinking the exact same thing everyone only reviews the highest trim levels. Not all of us can afford those "higher end" models. Would really love to see a battle of the base models as well for us little guys haha
Cant believe no one mentioned the cab size, ram has by far the best regular cab truck of the big 3. You even have room behind the seat like a mega cab.
Agree 100%. It also looked right.
This is a big deal for me. I love regular cabs, but most modern regular cabs (at least Fords) look TOO stubby and fugly. I wish one could get an F-150 with the styling of a 2018, and a 6.5' box, and the "behind the seat space" of the rare 3-door regular cab F-150s of 15 years ago. Just about an extra 5-6" back there so you can fit a nice 12" subwoofer enclosure to make the truck sound as badass as it looks and drives.
Yes but you could also just buy a car. If interior seating is your concern statically you don't need a truck.
@@kidsythe I could buy whatever I want. Doesn't change the fact that I prefer a regular cab truck with a 400hp V8 and a 6.5' box with enough space behind the back seat for some cargo without having to get a long ass supercab or supercrew configuration.
@@kidsythe but a car isn't a truck is it?
Had this truck as a fleet vehicle. Had the 32 gallon tank. On a longer trip across Florida I was able to get over 800 miles on the tank with the V6. I had the bigger cab with much more room and the bed spray in is a must. Once you throw something in without it you will see why lol. It was truly a great truck with no issues.
LINE X is so good. Still need a bed mat so stuff doesn't slide.
How many years and how many miles did you wind up putting on your fleet vehicle?
The cheapest truck plus it’s a Dodge🤮 Bad combo 👎
@@zoobrizz That sounds like hand-me-down brand devotion, talk. What do you drive?
@@Jeremiah_Johnson139 he wont answer, because its a shitbox lol
Nice truck! I like watching an entry level truck video because there is plenty of content about the most expensive trim levels. I will be pleased to watch you next videos with the truck. Greetings from Argentina!
I’ve driven that route literally dozens of times and can confirm it’s always bad on the leg between Boise and Ogden or so. A lot of it IS uphill, and there’s often a headwind. And the speeds are high. And I think Boise gas stations are probably on winter blend fuel at this point, which hurts quite a bit too.
It's Idaho, there's about 9 days out of the year that you're not fighting a headwind on 84.
The price of that truck is absolutely insane. It should be priced in the 25-26k range maybe.
Honestly still a kinda good looking truck visually from the outside, despite being the “cheapest” one!
The cheapest truck plus it’s a Dodge🤮 Bad combo 👎
White with chrome... always looks good. My last Ram lasted me for just over 200k... my work truck until someone t-boned me. Great vehicle just badic wear and tear stuff. Tires, battery, one exhaust, etc.
@@zoobrizz Not a Dodge. That name was dropped over ten years ago for trucks. Its RAM from the Ram truck division.
Got a lot of love for the 4th gens. Still think it’s one of the best looking trucks out there.
I like the Warlock Mustache grille better, though.
I own a 2022 express with the 5.7 4x4, its just awesome 😍😍😍😍
I had a 2017 Ram 1500 Express with basically the same set up. I had a Hemi and extended cab but otherwise very similar. had it for 5 years, 175,000km and it never let me down once.
Air lift 1000 is a great cost effective way to help when carrying loads in the bed or trailering. doesn't increase you capacity but allows the truck to ride better and maintain better fuel economy when towing.
By far the best/ most cost effective lift is the Bilstein 5100 set a 2" and a 2" rear spacer paired with Bilstein 5100 rear shocks. It allows that truck to clear a 35x12.5. I used my very heavily on road for towing and very heavily off road. The truck did surprising well, being that it is coil spring the rear flexes very well. I loved my truck and used for off road recoveries more times then I can count, even had to recover a power wagon a few times!
No matter how small the engine it takes a certain amount of power to go 80mph in a truck. That amount of power directly translates into the amount of fuel used. Probably doesn't help that it is not fully broken in yet either. My RAM 1500 with the 5.7 HEMI drank a lot of fuel until I got about 1500 miles on it. Now I can get about 19-20 highway but our speed limit is not 80 here it is mostly 70.
Same here. My 19' Laramie gets 20mpg on the highway at 75-80.
Tfl rebel got 16 IIRC when it was rated at 22. My 2019 averaged 16 over 16,000 (80% highway) miles and was rated at 24.....
my wrangler got 14 after 800 mile break in it gets 15.9 but I also drive less crazy as the engine also detuned it self , 4 cyl
I did 80 in Utah in a Frontier and actually got 25+ mpg on two fill ups and it tows more than this Ram. I did buy it used at 35k but paid 17k. I guess new big basic trucks seem like a poor thought out economy.
@@TheTechnologyFox more like new trucks are so laughably large that the only way you get decent Mpgs is by going 50-60 mph
i owned a 2019 like that. fuel mileage varies great from 65 to 80. 65 u will get your 23, 70 about 21mpg 75 about 19 and 80 16-18
Everything you're complaining about the truck not having, I'd be glad it doesn't. LED Headlamps... I hate them living in the cold snowy north... they cake up with snow and ice in storms due to no heat from the bulbs no matter how much ceramic coating I rub on them, Vinyl steering wheel... it's a work truck... who cares... no lane watch, or radar collision avoidance... I have that and they are annoying. I say most people need to learn how to drive and not rely on that stuff. It's a basic work vehicle. It's cheap for a reason. Add all that stuff and add 4-5K on the sicker. I agree it could use more gear... at least a 3.55 over that 3.08 or what ever it has.
You are 100 % correct on ALL points. My Tundra has LEDS and they suck in snow/cold. I hate adaptive cruise and when the logo is all covered in snow/salt/frost, it is useless anyway.
You're also probably bucking the wind since you're heading west. That might also contribute to the lower MPG's, along with the higher speed.
My wife Durango has the same v6 and going to Washington state we get 19 miles per gallon. That's up and down big mountains. Thanks for the enfo and videos. 👍👍👍
I bought a 2013 Ram1500 2wd with the flex fuel 4.7L engine and 6'4"bed with spray liner and manual door locks and manual windows in 4/2014 still new from the dealer with 8miles on it for ONLY $17,100, We will never see prices that low again for ANYTHING new
I love the 3rd cupholder for the 3rd passenger
Love the lil RAM classic and Love this series. My 2017 STX is pretty sparse too, but compared to my older trucks it’s loaded, my truck has the plastic steering wheel too, don’t bother me now, but the one touch point your always touching should be nicer. My wife’s 22 Pacifica has the 3.7 and on the the highway at around 70 we regularly get close to 30, but I gotta say they are great engines, around town like 22.5 mpg. I’m really pulling for the RAM, whole lot of honest goodness for the price compared to what’s on the market now, Great show!!!❤️
i have a 17 tradesman crew 4x4 with the hemi. its gets 18 mpg pretty consistent. as for things like adaptive cruise control and lane monitoring. i turn all that off when i get in a car lol. i truly hate that junk.
I bought a 2018 Ram Ecodiesel Laramie mega cab 4x4 on 11/24/18. The MSRP was 54k they were clearing them out because of the recall for 20K below MSRP, I drove it off for 38K! It was still the most money I have ever spent on a Truck, and that includes 3 F-250 Powerstroke 4x4 XLT, Supercab work trucks, and a 04 Eddie Bauer 6.0 Excursion. I thought I got screwed, but the Ecodiesel has 140k miles on it and is still going strong with meticulous maintenance needed to keep it reliable and it still is a good-looking truck too.
I have a 2019 ram 1500 classic crew cab bought it brand new I've had it for almost 4 years been a really good truck I average around 19-20 mpg. But definitely add led lights to it makes a huge difference.
I have a 2018 F150 XLT-FX4 supercrew, 4x4, 2.7 ecoboost, 3.73 rear end, 5.5ft box, 36 gallon fuel tank. We drove from Minnesota to California and back, total 6500 miles, up and down mountains, going 75-80mph and averaged 20.4mpg, plus we were hauling 2 kids, all our luggage, 2 coolers full of ice, food, drinks, and I brought a bunch of tools incase of an emergency. Bought it used for $27k 2 years ago! Got a great deal on it! Been very happy with it!
I had a single cab short bed with the hemi in sport trim. I loved it!!! It was much faster and better MPG then my current 4 door. Also it only cost 23k used with 14,000 miles on it !!!
what kind of mpg did you get?
@@jeffforbes70 22 or 23 crusing at 45-50 mph. Seems like avg was 19 or so. My truck now is at best 17 anywhere.
I've driven that route. You can't accommodate for the wind at times. It does drain fuel mileage. It freeway mileage direction and adds back in another.
Cheapest != affordable. Come on TFL.
@somecarnet
These guys are spoiled rotten rich kids that never grew up.
You can tell they have lived a privileged life.
80 mph is definitely the issue here. I've driven dozens of shop vehicles with the 3.6L and they are decent on fuel at normal speeds. Even a big Promaster 3500 gets about 20 mpg at 65 mph.
Nice content guys. My dad has the 2wd 2010 version with the V8. Personally all the recent safety systems are intrusive. I prefer to drive and not guided down the highway 🛣️. I believe the systems are good ideas 💡 but it causes laziness by creating less responsible drivers.
shh... natural selection bro 🤣🤣🤣
In a Recent road trip to Boulder Co from MN, our 2022 Ram Bighorn with the 5.7 with a 3.21 averaged 24 MPG when we arrived. Last year our 2015 Ram Express with the 5.7 with the 3.55 got 23.4 MPG to Salt Lake City from MN. Yeah we loving our Rams. BTW thats burning nothing but Premium.
Most people buying a base truck could care less about extra safety equipment. Plus they cost a lot on an already $40k truck. If you want LEDs you can swap that in, did it on my Ram makes the difference.
The downside of LED Lights is no heat...ice up easy in winter.
Agreed. I’d rather have the option to get a cheaper truck.
Swapping some LED bulbs into crappy halogen reflector headlights like this does not even come remotely close to matching the performance of OEM LED headlights. I’ve done it. The beam pattern sucks and creates excessive glare. The best option for this truck would be to swap to an actual dedicated LED housing like the Morimoto XB.
@@splewy maybe on the cheap Autozone ones. The ones I have from ARC came with an antiflicker harness so the beam’s are constant and clear, no glare.
@@mikefoehr235 if you buy the cheap ones yes. The ones I have from ARC have a heating/cooling fins to regulate the temperature Been through 2 winters they do fine.
Hey guys!!! Greetings from Montana!!
I have an ancestor of that truck. Bought my 2012 Standard Cab-Short Box a couple years ago fairly cheap cuz everyone wants the big trucks. I wanted a truck to go camping, fishing and exploring in. 4.7L V8 with 4x4 does what I need, great turning radius and easy to maneuver. Love it!!
$41k sticker for this configuration seems outrageous. This is a case where buying a 1-2 year old vehicle makes much more sense.
Trucks like this warm my heart.
And this video reminds me of the road trips I used to take with my wife when we were younger in my old Silverado regular cab work truck. Good times.
Now with kids I wonder if anyone will still be making 2 door trucks by the time it would be an option for me again.
So, you guys have been talking about the poor headlight issue for some time now. How about doing a video installing new solutions? Appreciate the work you do
You guys need to make a video where you try to install aftermarket bulbs \ led in there, so we can see the struggles of the installation and maybe what the results are. Is it worth it at the end of the day or not. Love the video btw
My wife's Suburban had some candles on it too. I just upgraded to LED bulbs from Amazon and it is like a new truck again.
Turning around in the parking lot was fun. My CCLB has the turning radius of a drunk hippopotamus so it usually just laughs at me while I do a 5 point turn in a parking lot. 🤣
I was wandering about check engine light which I saw 🤔 why !!
Roman, I laughed when you said you didn't like the plastic steering. Have guys our age become so luxury jaded a plastic steering wheel sends us into a tailspin? LOL (BTW, I had one in my 2020 Ranger. I didn't like it either :) )
@jimkee5451
Roman is a spoiled rotten kid who never grew up.
I’m liking Stubby! Unless you are hauling massive loads, the little v6 is a great choice. It can also be a high mileage hero. I’ve seen minivans with that engine over 300,000 miles. They chewed up a few transmissions, but the engine can go and go and go. I know nothing about the 8 speed on yours, so I can’t comment to its durability but it seems to be a well behaved sort of thing.
Idk man I've heard people say these engines are junk. Plus transmissions cost a fortune
@@TheAnnoyingBossThis is one of the best engines reliability-wise. The tranny is a ZF 8 speed. One of the best transmissions out there.
@@tinshield then why do I hear so many people saying they burn through them?
@@TheAnnoyingBoss the 8 speed ZF came out in 2013 in the Rams, idk about the minivans, but the engine has been out since 2010 I believe, so a number of them still had the older 5-6 speeds which had issues depending on the specific model. I've only ever seen one 8 speed ZF go bad under normal circumstances, overall they're pretty good from my personal experience
@@tinshield zf845re isn't as good as the zf870hp
Heated seats are def higher on the list than adaptive cruise, or auto breaking.
that extra 3k gets you much better engines and tech in the chevy and ford though. The refreshed 2.7 turbo in the chevy is especially impressive
I like the simplicity of the 3.6 no direct injection, no turbos, long term 200,000 miles plus I'd take this over any other. Very proven reliability in millions of cars, trucks, and vans. Around 300 horsepower. I had one of the modern chevy 3.6 v6s like this, similar 300 hp but not reliable long term. Eats timing chain tensioners in around 100,000 miles and really expensive to fix. The basic Ford 3.7 has similar power too but has water pump problems. Not normally a big deal to have a water pump fail, but their design dumps water into the oil and causes total engine failure quickly. Save $3000 and get the best engine of the bunch.
One thing that I really like about my 2022 F-150 is it’s optional 36 gallon fuel tank. Here in Alaska it’s a must have.
One small suggestion. If you’re not a huge fan of the plastic steering wheel you may consider a cover. They make some really nice ones these days, even some that are leather. Supposedly anyway. Thank y’all for all if your hard work and reviews.
Leopard skin cover from the truck stop 👍
IF Roman is super fussy(which he can be)he will just replace it. Like he has done with a Ford truck in the past.(waste of money as far as I am concerned since they flip these and not keep them)
Funny,When I bought my 2018 the NEW Ram body style was out and I thought I'd have an old looking truck instantly. 5 years later my '18 still looks like a new Ram. Just Classic. :)
Interesting that you consider adaptive cruise a basic necessity. I have never used adaptive cruise, but I use regular cruise control all the time and really could not care less about having the adaptive type.
You have never used adaptive cruise…how can you say you care less about having it?
At $40k+ for a 10 year old truck yes it needsmodern features to justify it's modern price.
I don't use cruise at all
You must never have driven across the LA basin during the daytime. Adaptive cruise control helped me retain my sanity.
I didn't think I would care about adaptive cruise until my new car had it. Can never go back to "dumb" cruise now.
I have a 2017 ram 1500 RCSB Express with 5.7. Bought it new for 21k. It has 115k miles now. I have added the 20” inch wheels and a toolbox. I plan on adding a leather steering wheel this winter.

Sinclair pulled out of North Dakota several years ago. Kinda miss the dinosaur. But we did get Mobil gas stations which we haven't had since the 60's.
We just drove our 2022 Lariat FX4 with an 8K pound trailer with the ecoboostfrom Ogden, UT to Anchorage, AK and got 15.9 mpg. I was impressed to say the least. It also had oversized tires slightly and were the Wrangler ultraterrains.
Had a 2015 silverado blackout edition rcsb and I loved it. That truck was sharp and got a ton of comments. It had the 5.3 with the 4x4 on the floor. With such a short wheelbase, it made backing my camper and enclosed work trailer a breeze. Such a tough little truck

Never once had any problems with it. Oil change & tire rotation every 5K miles. The only thing was the crappy Goodyear tires that came with the truck & wore out at 30K.
The 3.6 pentastar engine is a nightmare !! So many problems
Just to put this out there, but I work in a refinery and our plant will order 20 to 30 of these base work trucks at a time and most of them will never leave the plant. It is beneficial to not have blindspot monitoring and adaptive cruise for companies like mine that order these trucks.
It'll get better. I have a 1500 classic V6 and I average about 17 MPG. I'd say 50 percent of my driving is city, so I don't expect to get the efficiency it could. Fuel matters too. I love the benefits of E85, but it's a lot less fuel efficient than 87 or 89 octane.
That body style is a lot older than 2008 chief. That iconic look came out in 1994. I remember my friends dad buying a 94 ram with that style. Was all the rage back then. But it was built in the United States back then.
It's a different design... everything is different. Not gonna be able to take the doors of a '94 and stick it on a Classic.

These overhead cam 3.6 pentastar engines are not very good, just go look behind any Chrysler Ram dealer repair center and you will see many 3.6 replacement engines
A few years ago I had a '13 Ram 1500 Express double cab with the HEMI. It was a very solid and reliable truck. Powerful engine, comfortable, and good-looking. It was that Cranberry Red color and I got so many compliments on it despite being a six year old truck at the time. The only thing was it was such a gas hog, only averaging 11-12 mpg. Gas was cheap at the time (2018 average was $2.49) but it still meant a once a week trip. Also, being a 2013 vehicle, no advanced safety features of any kind. No rearview camera, no bluetooth, ACC, BLIS, Forward Collision, you name it. They either didn't exist or were only available on top tier luxury vehicles such as Mercedes, BMW, or Lexus. Despite its shortcomings, I still loved it. It was a great work truck/commuter truck. Ram has always been the leader of best-looking full-size pickups. And the fact they still make the fourth-gen body style alongside the current fifth-gen is amusing but it shows how well revered the old one still is.
Holy crap. You do not NEED all of the fancy stuff. Your idea of Safety necessities is a statement of what’s wrong with the industry. My Ram Express has good breaks, good tires, and a Hemi. It also has manual windows and locks, because electric locks and Windows are luxury items, not necessities.
And if you want to get better fuel economy, slow down to 60mph. Come on, you guys are smarter than that.
What if you wanna go 85+ mph and still get good mpgs? That’s why I love my Ford ecoboost. It’s really fast unlike every other truck and it still hauls plenty

Had a 2018 tradesman 4x2 would average 24 mpg on my 200 mile daily commute going at about 75mph, in SoCal. Upgraded to a 2018 sport 4x4 and average about 17 on the same commute. I noticed a huge difference going from the pentastar to the hemi.
Thats insane i remember buying my 5.7 variant in 2019 brand new for 26k
They’re still cheap, a leather crew cab hemi 2022 is about $33k out the door Msrp $54k. This truck is prolly closer to $20k out the door new. They’re lying about price to help advertising.
Your Lil Stubby looks cute with jeep wheels on it.
I like this series, even though I would never buy the most basic vehicle with no options. I used to drive a company provided work van that was part of a fleet. It was the lowest possible spec Nissan NV200 compact cargo van and I was always complaining about the lack of basic features like cruise control and power door locks. Many business owners choose fleet spec vehicles because they’re the cheapest option they can get their hands on and the business owner is very rarely if ever going to be the one stuck driving it.
On this thing 4X4 is a $7,000 option 😮
Yes, all you say is true, BUT, you get a tax deduction for the vehicle as it sits in the company's parking lot. So, to some extent you get a tax writeoff for the cost of the extra options., thus lowering your tax bill. And if the company leases the truck, your periodic tax deduction for a leased vehicle will offset (for the most part) all the extra equipment loaded into the vehicle. It seems funny the extent to which tax considerations influences which vehicle you get and how you equip it.
For a cheap truck at 37k, its still very expensive. Sad that things have gone up 20% in the last 2 years.
My 2013 single cab hemi gets 23.9 on the road doing 72.I have factory 22s, cold air intake, Flowmaster exhaust system and transmission and engine tuned
It's kind of interesting to hear complaints about 40k for a basic truck (which I agree is crazy), but what do we think is gonna happen when everyone makes adaptive cruise as standard as they wished? Def not gonna bring the price down
I have a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado single cab short bed 4x4 WT that is what they consider their base model and it’s been a fantastic truck! It’s got everything I need and none of the things I don’t! It’s still got the manual transfer case and tow/haul mode, I’ve installed a Range device to keep it from going into the AFM and I am still getting close to 18 mpg with mixed driving in North Carolina, which for me isn’t too bad considering I am running 285/75R17 Toyo Open Country AT3 tires!
Insane. I paid $34k out the door for my new 2015 4x4 4 door RAM Express with the Hemi, and got a consistent 18+ MPG.

@@atodaso1668 The 8 speed really helps with MPG. I have the 5.7, 3.21, and 2WD in my 2015 fleet Big Horn. Its rated for 15 city, 17 combined, and 22 highway. I typically average 19 mpg and have gotten 27.7 mpg keeping a consistent 65 mph.
@@atodaso1668 mine had the 6 speed. It is shown on my channel from years ago. Also note most of my driving was out on rural backroads, not in town or interstate. Even still my old ram got 18+ with the cruise set on 75 on the interstate. And one last thing, I am not sure if yours had the cylinder deactivation or not. The 2015 did. Once it got up to speed and was not under a load it would drop back to running on 4 cylinders. I own a '13 RAM 1500 w/ the Hemi and just got 18mpg traveling from Lancaster, PA to State College, PA (about 240 miles round trip) - traveling at about 72-75mpg most of the way. I also know when I rented a Classic last year while my truck was getting some body work done after I had a fender-bender, the Classic w/ V6 was getting at least 4-5mpg better gas mileage around town than my Hemi does.
The Stinker gas station! Hahaha.
There should be a storage cubby under the center seat as well. I have one in my 17' quad cab with the front bench seat.
Personally I’d have gotten the Hemi, even though it costs more. Because you’ll get back most of that cost when you go to sell it bc the hemi is more desirable
Which is wild because the Hemi ticks and gets even worst mpg than the V6.
@@kirsatta Name recognition, better sound, and “bigger is better” mentality goes a long way for it market-wise I guess
Not only that the hemi is more reliable than the reg v6
@@zofferz0 it's kinda not tho. They are both about the same reliability wise. The 3.6 has literally been used in everything for 10 years.
41K is unbelievable for an old generation single cab short bed v6. I payed 75k for a 22 Lvl1 TRX. I still remember in 2013 when Ram became a Ram, not Dodge, I got a quote from a dealer for 2013 Big Horn Quad Cab 5.7 4x4 and no other options for $28,500. Those single cab, short bed 5.7 Rams were valued as most HP per $ at the time. IIRC you could pick one up for $20-22k.
i want to see this truck with a small lift, AT tires, and a camper shell! modest and capable!
I bought my Ram 1500 tradesman in August of '17. Mine is the crew cab with the 5.5 ft. box and the 5.7 hemi. It currently has just over 60,000 miles on the vehicle and gets between 17.5 and 19 MPG combined. On open road, if I keep my speeds at or below 70, I get between 23 and 24 MPG. I have the same features you have except the on board navigation (my 10 year old Tom Tom works just fine and it still updates for free). I purchased this truck at the year end sales and paid $33,000.00 out the door. I don't like all the computerized systems on the truck because as the saying goes, "the more complicated the plumbing the easer it is to stop it up" . The truck has had 5 recalls 4 computer related. The last thing I'll mention is the transmission, if I had had a choice I would have taken a 6 speed manual over that monstrosity of a sealed ZF 8 speed auto.
I can not believe that is a $40k truck.
I would never pay that much
I can...
everything has gone to crap after covid... Even beef cost 2x as much, now.
I have the 2004 version of this truck (2WD Manual) and it basically the same truck. Still have it. Very dependable. Everything works. Paid $11,900 in 2004. Runs fine and doesn't burn oil. I have always gotten right at 20 MPG. So somthing is wrong. Check your tire pressure. Never drive a new anything without double checking the tire pressure. Dealers always take air out of the tires so the ride will always be quiet. No reason to get the low mileage. Dodge engines do great with high quality gas. Never put cheap gas in a dodge engine. Cheap gas will always lower you mileage on a RAM 3-4 MPG. My experience.
The average American leaves a 16 ton carbon footprint A YEAR (second place if compared to the chinese,). One Jet flying straight to COP27 leaves a 50 ton footprint(one way trip). But 50tonners want you to stop driving your fossil fueled truck.
I've got a buddy with the 3.6 and one with a 5.7. Both are quad cab 1500 classic models. My buddy with the 5.7 gets better fuel economy.
I've found that the 5.7 mpg is hugely dictated by how much you let it idle. It becomes real hungry at a 0mph Idle. (no VVT mode when it idles)
Great video! This is going to be a great series to watch on this truck! The question I have is regarding the mpg. It seems to me that even though your doing 80 mph, you were only tacking 2000 rpm so why such low mileage? I know the motor is new and it will take a bit to break in but after you get 500 miles on it I would think you will get better mpg. Excited waiting for the next tank fill up to see if mpg went up!! Great job both of you!!
my 2013 5.7 pinged a lil when new I put good grade quilty gas in went away as for mpg we dont buy trucks for that
Even though it has the 3:21 axle and only turning 2000 rpm the truck is still fighting at least an 80 mph headwind. With a vacuum gage you could easily see where the gas is going. I once had a ‘76 Chevy 1/2T with 3:08 axle and 3 spd transmission that got better gas mileage and performed better with a trailer in tow by dropping down to 2nd gear, the engine rpm was way up but the truck pulled the load better with less throttle opening. Just because the gear ratio is high doesn’t mean the economy is going to be great.
@@robertpulliam9973 regardless what gear you were in, you would have been fighting that head wind also. And driving in 2nd gear would raise the rpm which would burn more fuel.
@@youtubecarspottersguide1 I know we don't buy truck for great fuel mileage but it was TFL that was talking fuel mileage
For all we know... he doesn't coast when coming to any slow down/stop and goes straight to the brake pedal. Wish he drove with the mpg screen, instead of the mph display. Would like to see what the live action mpg bar was sitting at when he zoomed in at 80mph. 11:15
I had a regular cab Dodge Ram in College, it has the widest interior, you can sit 4 people across if you really need to. I had the big V8 in mine, was a blast.
That was $10k cheaper like 3 years ago....
yup... then covid happened.
I'm a Union Carpenter and I have a 14 Ram 1500 5.7 hemi 4x4 big horn with 8speed trans drivetrain. I'm at 152k and I still get 20 to 22 mpg. At 65 70mph.i love my 14 I also got the 8.something UCONNECT flat-screen radio. Also mine is a Crew Cab
The fuel economy should get much better. I have a similarly equipped truck at work, but with the small back seat. It will get mid-20mpg on the highway at around 70mph. I’ve gotten high teens when towing a trailer at 55mph. Good truck overall.
Nope 👎
Keep in mind Boise is 2700' and Ogden is 4300' so there was a bit of a climb in there too. And of course wind drag is not linear, 80 kills efficiency on any truck pretty good usually.
Those tow mirrors don’t help when it comes to fuel economy.
Thinking about Tommy's comment about the Ram being introduced when he was 11....the Square body Chev was introduced when I was 6 and the GMT400 that started to replace it was introduced when I was 21...
For an extra $1800 I'd of optioned for the hemi. Very hard dollar to power ratio to beat
Exactly. If the cheapest Ford and Chevy trucks were $3,000 more they could still claim cheapest truck and get the V8
Tick tick tick tick tick tick boom
I’d rather spend $1800 less and get a crew cab hemi or Silverado with leather interior. Stop believing these BS prices on this channel
Literally a few years ago, this truck was under $30k out-the-door. $42k would buy you something like a big horn, 4x4 crew cab, with the 5.7 and a bunch of options. Totally insane what has happened. Truck (and car) ownership is getting less obtainable for the average person.
Super excited to see how this truck does. Hopefully the fuel mpg is because of break in
Nope The cheapest truck plus it’s a Dodge🤮 Bad combo 👎
@@zoobrizz I like that they got it because it's the cheapest full size truck you can get. It'll be interesting to see how it holds up
Guy is putting that on every comment he can find. A no options truck is gonna last a lot longer than a fully option one... don't care what make it is. More features it has, the more stuff is gonna break after the warranty is over.
@@Hydra360ci I agree. I hope they really push it. I have an 02 Ford f150 that is very similar to this truck as far as options but this truck has almost 100 more horsepower than my 4.6 liter V8. So I really curious about it.
@@dalejones4322 it’s not the cheapest by a mile. $35k for this truck is a joke when you can get a crew cab hemi msrp $43k for like $28k out the door
In my experience in my 2022 Ram with the 5.7 and no etorque the fuel economy was best after about 400 miles and dropped when I hit 13000 miles. But all in all a very solid truck and decent fuel economy
Tow mirrors are a very rare in a 1500. They are a must have in my opinion.
But to be fair on a 5000 lb max rated truck probably not necessary and one of the easier things to add after sale.
Yeah, I don’t know why because it’s a V6 single cab you’re probably hauling at most you’re not towing a trailer and if it is, it’s not a big long one so giant told me he’s make no sense
Crazy how much cars/trucks have become. This is why the smaller trucks like the Maverick have come out, you can actually get one for a reasonable price.
Take a shot every time Tommy says "fantastic"
Completely agree on the safety --- they charge as options for things that can save lives.
Engine light at first refill ?
I have a 2023 Tacoma, which is smaller than that. It was 34,394 and it’s got Apple CarPlay and android auto, adaptive cruise control, dual climate, automatic headlights, and even built in navigation
I really wish they would have put this version of the 3.6 Pentastar in the Gladiator. Just that little extra HP and torque is really what it needs. I'll also say, as a previous owner of two 4th gen Ram 1500's, they get their best MPG at 65 MPH or less. At 70 and above it really starts to drop off.
that's true of most vehicles. Years ago we did a "test" (think, last fuel crisis), where we made a common 330mile trip doing ONLY the posted speed limit, instead of the usual +10 to +15. posted, we got 35mpg. "normal" was 28mpg. but going slower was EXCRUCIATING. :D
I think the power is limited in the jeeps because there is less room for the larger intake and exhaust that the trucks can fit.
@@stanludorf2311 The higher output 3.6 gets stuffed in the Charger and Challenger with the shorter intake. Besides that, I own both Wrangler and Gladiator, there is plenty of room to fit the longer intake.
It's really the same motor. Same in minivan, same in Charger, same in Jeep, same in Ram. Minor exhaust, intake and, tuning differences to fit the platform. Jeep engineers aren't dumb, they used what fits and what works the best for the application.
My 2019 Tacoma Access cab 4x4 came with adaptive cruise, blind spot monitoring, backup sensors and more. Was a 4cyl and had a payload of over half ton (door sticker 1,300 lbs). $30k. Was it a dog? You bet! Did it get crappy mileage? For sure! Did the transmission hunt up and down constantly? They all do that! Sold it and ordering F-150 XL 4x4 shortbed with 5.0 ;-)
Maybe I missed it but what was the unexpected issue?
Can only guess it was the Hwy MPG.
lol... and the lack of Adaptive Cruise... and lack of lane sensors... and Halogen lights... and the rubber steering wheel... and the tiny led display. And the key fob....
Thought 2010 was the first year for the 4th gen body style. Also don't forget they did an interior update in 12 or 13. On the headlights issue. Get some quality LED drop in units off Amazon, or your choice of retailer. They work very well in the reflector style housings on the RAM trucks.
2010 was the first year for the HD trucks, 2009 for the 1500, and yeah interior in 13. Amazon lights have been a crap-shoot for me, I personally would recommend an online store focused on lighting where you can actually trust the reviews.
I got some off of Amazon that my dad’s coworker recommended me there sealight and there solid
Haha, most affordable just sounds better than cheapest. $40k for a stripped truck…ouch
Just a question: do modern motors still have to be “broken-in?”
Read the owners manual and yes they need to be broken in..
Redline it straight out of the dealer lot
@@Tomekkplk I sold Ford's awhile back and did just that. One of the lot boys decided to snitch to the sales manager and got his ass kicked for it.
My 20 Tundra said no towing until 800 kms on the odometer. So I put 800 on it and was done.
@@Tomekkplk some people do this in hopes of better mpg and less oil burning.
