  • This is part 2 of a video to mount Cattleya orchids on cork bark. In part 1 of the video, I prepped the cork bark. In this video, I am unpotting the orchids, cleaning them up, and fixing them to the cork bark. We also take a look at the tags - one is simple, the other is quite complicated!

    Thank you so much for clarifying the names! The info that I've found online have been SO complex that I became even more confused. I appreciate your dumb-downed version for us simple folks. lol

    Good point...thats why I always repot my orchids when I get them because I dont know what is used as medium nor do I know how long its been potted in that medium so I make a habit of repotting my orchids when I get them and they thrive

      It’s always a judgment call - there are some orchids that can be stalled or set back by repotting at the ‘wrong’ time. Thanks for watching!

      @@TheOrchidHut you're absolutely right I just always wonder whats in that pot when I receive it so curiosity leads me to unpot/repot cause its so easy fir these babies to loose roots and rot...somewhat scared to the chance of loosing them which its heartbreaking when its too late...

    Howdy Danna! Thank you kindly for this helpful video. I am seeking to use your tutorial to mount a fern on cork bark. My question is if you believe, based on your experience, whether the stretchy string you used to mount orchid is reusable for another plant should the mount process for a particular plant fail. It happens that we get a plant in great condition and then it adjust to our home, watering, and feed and care may fall through the cracks and the plant goes to plant heaven and we need to re-do the mount again.

      That’s a great question re: different application for the stretchy cord. My experience with orchids is that the stretchy cord begins to deteriorate after about 2 years, but by then, the orchid root system has attached to the cork bark so the cord is no longer needed anyway. I really don’t think I would try to reuse it because the pieces would likely be too short to work with. The cord knots would be impossible to untie.

      You can order it online, but won’t be able to pick the exact pieces you will get. Pet stores carry it as well, often for reptile habitats.

    Hi there, I live in Florida and we have the Spanish moss everywhere. Can I use it along with the regular moss? Thanks!

    • @TheOrchidHut
      @TheOrchidHut  5 місяців тому

      In general…roots will probably prefer the sphagnum. Spanish moss retains a little extra humidity around the plant, or is just decorative. It depends on your purpose.

    I have had many smaller species mounted on cork decades ago, but never understood why using cork over actual wood. I suppose, it's because it does not break down like many woods. I would think that having wood instead cork may hold more moisture and perhaps eliminate the need water water so frequently. Wood would still last for a decade or more. Thoughts?
    I do appreciate you not mounting second orchid and the explanation behind that choice. Also, like the idea of the "stretchy cord". I'll try that when mounting some Sophronitis (cat) species. Good info.

    • @TheOrchidHut
      @TheOrchidHut  Рік тому +1

      Cork is preferred over most woods because it just won’t deteriorate as quickly. Hard woods for mounting orchids is fine, but I would avoid any aromatic woods (cedar) or woods with high tannin content. Also, be careful of wood collected around salt water because the wood will retain the salt. All in all, cork is just easier. Great question!

      @@TheOrchidHut Thank you for the response. I did a real world test with terrible results. I had a S.Ceruna on a driftwood mount that I misted daily. Roots roots on 2 new pseudobulbs.. I decided to put sphag moss in a pot about 1/3 up, then placed the driftwood on the sphag and misted daily for a week. Day 7, I ran water over the mount and sphag. Two days later, the tips of the newer roots had retreated as if dead. Appears the mount was much more porous than I thought. Hope I didn't kill my Cernua!

    • @TheOrchidHut
      @TheOrchidHut  Рік тому

      Driftwood can be difficult to prep for orchids. It usually should be soaked multiple times, and some use a mild mixture of chlorox. In this video I talk about this a bit: ua-cam.com/video/8unExU73684/v-deo.html. I hope your orchid is ok.

    I have a question but it is about one of my Phals that I received earlier this year. She was in flower when I got her and now her flowers have all faded (faded at least 6 weeks ago) but I am not seeing any new growth - no new leaves or roots. My other Phals are still either blooming or have started/ or grown new leaves and I am seeing root growth on the others that the flowers have faded. Do I need to just leave this one alone? Or should I repot to see if something is going on with her roots (I repotted her in May)? She has aerial roots, but those have not changed / not growing either. She is just acting differently from my other Phals. Any suggestions? Thanks!

    • @TheOrchidHut
      @TheOrchidHut  2 роки тому

      You’ve left a great description of what is going on with your phals, but it’s difficult without seeing a picture. There should be no reason to repot again if you just did this in May. How was the root system then? It is true that some orchids just have a longer resting spell after flowering, so this could be the case. Does the orchid look distressed at all - like floppy or wrinkled leaves?

    • @TC19861
      @TC19861 2 роки тому +1

      @@TheOrchidHut She does not seem distressed. Her leaves are nice - not floppy and she has not lost any of the leaves she has. The root system appeared good when I repotted her. I did remove the dead roots (which I do not recall her having many). She has several aerial roots. Thanks for the response!
