I have been doing a rewatch of the series and my pattern of late has been to watch an episode then watch your reaction to it. And while, yeah, your predictions might not be as accurate as you might hope (or maybe not--surprising the audience, while leaving them thinking "I should have seen that coming" is the mark of truly excellent writing), I find your analyses after the episodes truly inciteful.
Now, of course, I'm caught up on your reactions and since I'm not willing to pause my rewatch I guess I'll just have to press on. I'll be back, of course, for your next Buffy reaction. (For reasons I won't get into hear to avoid spoiling for anybody, I'm not as much of a fan of Angel.)
I have thoroughly enjoyed your reactions and the commentary you have given with them. Excelsior!

I love it when Spike is surprised by an unexpected supernatural creature ambush. He's usually so on top of things, especially in combat. But when REALLY creepy critters show up, Spike is just as horrified as anyone -- for a moment. Then he remembers that fighting is fighting, and he holds his own.

Watch Buffy, they said. It'll be fun, they said. 😭Joyce has had her flaws, but she such a good mama and I hate the show for making us feel these feelings and think about what life is going to be like without her. Buffy's break down in the kitchen is one of the most heart wrenching moments in the shows, because she hardly ever cries, let alone break into tears like that. And the rest of the time she feels she has to stay strong and be the one who can take care of everything around everyone else

It's not just people that are sick. Joyce is the exception but it's people who have had their brains affected by Glory sucking out energy. Also Ben is not an unpaid intern ... he is someone who has graduated from medical school and is now an intern. As in his first year of residency training at the hospital but he does get paid.

Think of medical interns as basically almost-doctors. They are doctors, they just aren't allowed to work unsupervised.
Unpaid interns to get exposure in a career/corporate environment are a relatively new thing, and generally for people who have a bit less education than a medical intern.
"A medical (or surgical) intern is a physician in training who has completed medical school and has a medical degree, but does not yet have a license to practice medicine unsupervised. Medical education generally ends with a period of practical training similar to internship, but the way the overall program of academic and practical medical training is structured differs depending upon the country, as does the terminology used (see medical education and medical school for further details)."

@@samanthas8340Medical internship is in the first year of residency, and the hours can be pretty long.
"An internship happens during your first year of residency and lasts for one year, although some professionals decide to extend it. You'll continue to work under the guidance of an experienced medical professional and get an even more detailed view of what it means to be a doctor."
"Medical interns typically complete 49 or more hours per week, so they may need to prepare mentally for the changing shifts in the field."
"Residency requires immense dedication and long hours of work. The shifts during this period will be long, averaging around 60-80 hours per week."

@@samanthas8340 Intenships being unpaid is a very recent phenomenon. Perhaps 15 years, 20 at most. In the UK at least. I'm guessing in the US too, because it was such a big topic of discussion in the news/media about young graduates now being expected to do internships for free when they haven't before.
However, with medical trainees, whether trained doctors or nurses, they have always been paid while on their trainee work placements. No one would train as doctors if you expected them to work 60-80 hours a week in tough life saving situations with no pay.

The star thing is true. The light from the sun takes like 8 minutes to get to us. So the things that are further away take longer and longer to get to us. • @coldservings
      @coldservings 11 місяців тому +2

Limiting to stars that are visible to the naked eye (which would be what Tara and Willow were looking at), that's actually false. The most distant star visible to the naked eye is v762 Cas, at 16,308 light years away. Now, in human terms, that's a long time, but in terms of stellar lifetimes, How long stars "live" is a bit complicated. Stars form, they end up on the main sequence, "live" for a time on the main sequence, then, as they exhaust the hydrogen fuel at their core, grow into red giants where they live for a time, then, as all fusion stops at their core, they collapse into white dwarfs (if heavy enough going supernova along the way) where they co tinge to glow as they slowly cool.
Larger/heavier stars, ironically, actually last less time on the main sequence be ause they burn brighter and thus use up the hydrogen in their core more quickly.
For a star like our sun, the time of. The main sequence is about 10 billion years. For the most massive stars, that time is only ("only") a few million years. That's still quite a bit longer than the time it takes for the light from the most distant star visible to the naked eye to reach the earth.
So, while some stars might have "died" in the time it takes light from them to reach the Earth, the vast majority of those visible to the human eye are still out there and burning.

I remember when i learned about the stars being dead when i was in High School, made me feel really sad. Because like you grow up thinking the stars are magic but then you find out they are giant burning space farts, and to make matters worse they have already died. It went from dawning reality, to be funny, to being sad, because when you think about it those dead stars could have had planets likes our own who's life is just gone now.
...i went existential then, but i was genuinely gutted when i found out the stars were just fire and were actually already dead.

There is also a relativistic view of space that states that the idea of a 'now' existing elsewhere while we observe its past is a fallacy, now is completely subjective. That that the only now that makes any sense is the now that exists for both places when they are causally linked, eg in this case, when the light from one reaches the other.

The demon attacked Buffy because she preventing it from getting to Joyce.
Everyone seems to like this Xander joke:
Xander: *"I still don't get why we had to come here to get info about a killer snot monster."*
Giles: *"Because it's a killer snot monster from outer space. I did not say that."*
It's good, but my favorite is, *"Look at how teeny Mercury is compared to, like, Saturn. Whereas in contrast, the cars of the same name..."* as it's a play off plnets and their car brand names and his view of their size.
I love the fact that Buffy feels she needs to be strong, but breaks down with the loud music playing when she is alone doing dishes. I don't feel Riley understands that about Buffy and is pushing for things she unconsciously told him she wasn't ready for when she told him she was backing off on dating in _Doomed._ I also love how she was on instant alert and preparedness, slayer-wise the second Dawn's scream permeated her consciousness.

I'm going to help you out here a bit. These aren't spoilers. It's stuff we already know:
    A) The Queller demon is summoned to kill a very particular set of people who have recently fallen MENTALLY ILL - "the moon is a cause of insanity." Summon a demon because... why do it yourself when a demon will do it, right?
    B) The hospital is overflowing with patients in the PSYCHIATRIC ward.
    C) Glory does something very particular when she's getting weak and she needs to pull herself together. Remember in the warehouse when Buffy first encountered Glory, what Glory did to the fat delivery guy when she seemed to be spinning out? That's him in the hospital accosting Dawn. Remember the guy who Buffy recognized on the gurney as the guard from the warehouse? He was also mentally agitated, as is Joyce. But Joyce seems different because we don't know the root of her condition if it's not natural, since Buffy didn't see anything supernatural around her when she did that spell and discovered Dawn. So it's puzzling.

The star thing -- there's a sliver of truth to it, but it's not as true as some people make it out to be.
It's true that the vast majority of stars, even within our galaxy, are so far away that the light takes tens of thousands of years to get to us, and light from stars in other galaxies can take millions or billions of years to reach us. In that time, many of them certainly die before the light reaches us.
However, the stars we can actually see in the sky and identify as points of light are VERY close to us, within a few thousand light years or so, so the light is "only" a few thousand years old at most. Even the shortest-lived stars (which are, counter-intuitively, the largest, and brightest ones) still live on the order of millions of years.
So no, most of the stars we can see are still very much plugging along normally, even though we're seeing light that's thousands of years out of date.

Be really careful this season about spoilers in the comments. People tend to be a little… overzealous, and they seem to forget that it’s rude to spoil things for first time watchers. It’s hard for me to feel anything other than intense dislike for Riley. While Buffy is dealing with the illness of her mother, Riley cheats on her with vampires. Posting my BUFFY REWATCH recap for ‘Listening To Fear’. May contain spoilers.
Even though there is a significant Willow and Tara scene I could talk about, there actually really isn't much that I can say about it that I haven't already said elsewhere. So again, this episode recap is going to be about other characters instead.
I have a question though to start off with that you guys could probably answer. It seems the show writers are paralleling Joyce's brain tumor with Glory's brain sucked victims in that the Queller demon goes after Joyce as well as the victims and in the way both the victims and Joyce seem to be aware of Dawn being the Key. So my question is, does that mean what's manifested Joyce's brain tumour was caused by supernatural causes as opposed to natural causes? I was under the impression that Joyce developed the tumour naturally - as any human can. I get that Glory hasn't sucked her brain but given how they keep correlating Joyce's arc with that of the whole plot line of Glory sucking out people's brains... They seem to be making the statement in the writing that even natural causes of mental illness aren't entirely natural. Or rather - are entirely natural - but we don't have all the information as to what we consider as a conscious collective what is natural VS what is supernatural.
And see,...I bring this scene up in this episode recap because I have a theory on this subject. You could even say a well-reasoned and analyzed hypothesis that dates as far back as my childhood. And this theory is that perhaps we do not have all the information on mental illnesses medically/clinically in that they're not just illnesses. I was actually talking about this with @surreal-wanderer yesterday in the DMs. It's not that I don't believe mental illness exists - I absolutely do. It's just that I don't always think it's an illness as such. Some are, I definetly believe that. But others I think are just huge misunderstandings or misinterpretations of the human psyche based on not having all of the information on the human experience, and specifically that what goes on in the mind is not always individuated from what goes on in reality - or rather what we percieve as to what goes on purely subjectively but agree on as a majority. Because we do know to be true, scientifically, that we do not percieve the physical world in it's natural state. We percieve it through the channels of our physical senses - and that of all the information and activity that goes on in the brain to which our senses recieve and react to. That is a scientific truth. What isn't is how far that actually goes in truth. We can only guess that. Interpret it based on what we think makes the most sense to us - and as I said - what we agree on to be truth as a collective.
So this scene with Joyce and Buffy talking about the true nature of Dawn makes me question as to whether it's Joyce's brain tumour that gives her access to information that is actually true - and therefore cannot be just an illness but also some type of insight into what the "non-mentally ill" cannot percieve of. Because if you've noticed, only the mental patients recognize Dawn for what she actually is - the Key - when seemingly "sane" people cannot... Apart from Joyce - who is suffering with symptoms of "insanity" because of her brain tumor. And I guess the question I'm really asking you guys regarding Joyce's arc and what the writers seem to be implying by it, as well as the plot line with Glory, is whether the experience of "insanity" is a symptom of what is only believed to be an illness, or is it an unintentional look-in to what goes on in "reality" beyond "sane" human perception? Is it really just a chemical imbalance of the brain or something more? Something we aren't yet aware of in our scientific studies of the correlations between the true nature of reality and the true nature of the human.
Read this carefully and ponder before you try to answer. I don't want immediate reactive responses triggered entirely by emotion - that's always the worst thing to happen in discussions of this matter. It's why they never really get anywhere in concluding anything. Because people can't seem to leave their egos behind to assess said subject rationally and calmly. Take your time thinking it over - and then respond.

It’s heavily implied that he’s cheating on Buffy with these vampire women (it’s always pretty girls, he lets them kiss his body, suggestive camera angles, the shame on his face, etc.) in addition to letting them feed on him.🚩
AND he always had a problem with Buffy being better/stronger than him, but he claims it’s his “protective instincts.” It’s not. It’s his ego. 🚩Many women have insecure partners, who dislike it when they succeed and I think Riley is meant to represent that.

Light only moves a certain speed. Its fast but not fast enough. The light you see from stars was created thousands of years ago, and you are seeing that as it arrives to your eyes. Even the light and heat from our sun takes eight minutes (or is it 5, can't remember) to reach earth.

Why do you think we measure the distance between galaxies in light years? That's how many years it would take the light to travel from one location to the next. The light you are seeing today from the stars in Orion's Belt, for example, is over 1300 years old... because the Orion Nebula is approx. 1344 light years away. Technically, any of those stars could have died in the past 1000 years and we wouldn't know it yet. However... given what we know about how stars die it is highly unlikely, to the point of absurdity, that any of them are dead yet.

Speaking as someone who is claircognizant I always loved the way Joyce described how she found out about Dawn not being her daughter.
She says it’s “knowledge that just came to her” that she “just knew”
There’s only ever one other character throughout the whole Buffyverse that explains their psychic abilities like that and that’s Cordelia. Even though Cordelia primarily gets visions, so she’s primarily clairvoyant, she can also feel what the people she’s seeing in the visions are feeling physically and emotionally too. And on top of that… she “just knows”.
It’s nice to be represented with this every now and again. Makes me feel like I’m not alone in having these experiences. Of course it’s a fictional supernatural show but every now and again, fiction does cross with real life. The Clairs (or ESP) are very much real. While everybody else is talking about magic and fantasy. Stuff you can only find in fiction, you have the characters Joyce and Cordelia explaining and dealing with the real shit.
And I don’t know. I just always loved that about Joyce in this episode.

Fun fact (minor spoiler), Dawn is closer to being Buffy's daughter than her sister, as her physical form was made from Buffy's essence. They're kind of both. There's a version of a script for one of the later eps this season in which she calls Dawn "my sister, my daughter", but they thought it would be too confusing for the fans, so they stuck with them just being sisters.

Stargazing is one of the most romantic and profound experiences you could ever have with your lover as well as one of the most innocently intimate things you can do with a lover. They can’t show sexual intimacy between the couple so they do something that works to give the desired effect on the audience of a deep romance without being sexually explicit.
Stargazing is such a romantic thing to do. A big mood. I would love to have this moment one day. I just love how Willow tells Tara that looking at the stars made her feel like she was part of the stars instead of insignificant to them. I feel like that all the time. Part of the Universe. Of the Universe. Not a separate entity to it. And certainly not inferior to it.
I actually have a piece of meta on Tumblr that’s paralleled with a stargazing scene in ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’ between Xena and Gabrielle where I talk about the significance of showing intimate scenes like this between WLW couples because it’s true WLW representation and something that they don’t really show on TV today much because there are no censors or restrictions to contend with anymore when it comes to same-sex love and so show-makers prefer to show sexual intimacy such as making out instead.
And I specifically talk about why this kinda thing is actually better for WLW representation because it shows how deep their love for each other is when sexually explicit scenes don’t always show that. I mean take for example Buffy and Riley; although it’s a straight relationship but love is love. The constant sexual intimacy between them doesn’t make up for the apparent loss of love between them that Riley feels. Buffy pulls away from Riley emotionally and so he doesn’t feel it. He doesn’t feel loved by her. The sex does nothing for him in knowing where he is in her heart. And so it does nothing for the audience either. You can see a huge striking difference in comparison when it comes to Willow and Tara even though they cannot be shown to be sexually intimate. It’s not necessary to show it because you can see the deep love between them when watching scenes like this. That’s why it’s very important to show these scenes.
