The generator normally can fix w/new parts. There is an actual spring in the starter that gets stuck or something. 'BENDIX SPRING' easy to remove whole generator unit from van. And put back in thanks!

Check subfloor for soft spots and or water damage around fridge, and under fresh wate tank areas. That’s where I found the water damage on our 1998 Concourse. Carpet looked new but wood subfloor was rotten underneath it.

We absolutely love our Chinook. You will love yours also. They are extremely reliable, with proper maintenance of coarse. Helpful hints..replace the microwave with a combo convection oven, to help keep water contained, wash your hair over the sink. If the passenger seat doesn’t swivel, get a swivel. Install a diesel heater. Happy travels.

Don't put a composting toilet in. It is not expensive to dump! Camp once a month at a campground and dump then. Save the money for the newer a/c and replace the vent fans with a max air with a cover! You can drive down the road with the vent open and get great air flow. The generator is great you will really like it. Great find

Regarding the chassis battery. A LiFePO4 battery charges differently than the older technologies so you may need a new converter/charger and also a DC to DC converter for the engine alternator path. Neither of those are very expensive, consult someone who can provide the right advice. LiFePO4 batteries charge at a higher current, in 1999 that wasn't a consideration. Whatever you paid, you scored a good one, the fact that you could just replace the tires and drive it back to Eugene shows how good the engine and transmission are.

    • @shaunmc1910
      @shaunmc1910 Місяць тому +1

Just get better replacement lead acid and consider a power station / “solar generator” if the current generator doesn’t work. You can get a Pecron E3600LPF which has a true 3600 w output even (30amp) plug. The generator is likely hard wired to a sub panel and then to the transfer switch. If you attach an 30 amp plug to the sub panel if would plug into the Pecron. Then use that for adding lithium etc. this powers the main panel. If you plug in the transfer switch activates. If it goes below temp you still have acid house batteries (emergency). But if something like the Pecron running as the “generator” it would act like the generator is running all the time. You can get alternator charger still for it. You can charge from solar and at $1300 right now. Hard to beat for something that has 3600w. Bet a generator on that model was something like the onan micro 2800.

Wow! I have a 2001 Trail Lite class b+ which is an exact copycat of the Chinook. Just minor differences here and there.
Its built to last too. All oak cabinets etc.
I kept the dinette table but took out the jack knife couch and built a huge storage shelf 28 inches tall then put my queen size foam mattress bed on top of that which folds in half like a murphy bed to get out of the way for day use. It works great.
I put 3 100 watt solar panels on the roof and use 2 AGM batteries which is plenty. I also put in 2 slide out cutting boards under the stove and sink for more counter space. I use a single propane camp stove instead of the built in burners giving me more counter space.
I also put in a huge slide out drawer under the stoves where the microwave was for more kitchen storage. Pots and pans and food. I put a new microwave in the shelf above the cab.
Ive been living in it for 7 years quite comfortably.

B+ classification is something that was made up by Rv marketing….
To sell more class C RVs.
This classification does not exist within the DMV.

Ich war auch beeindruckt davon, wie luxuriös und fortschrittlich die RV’s bereits in den 2000” in den USA waren. I loved watching the first walk through. About a year ago I started getting familiar with my Mom’s 97 Premier Chinook. Twins almost - same paint job. I had been smogging it every other year for Mom after my Dad passed way, and recharging batteries but it was time to find a new owner. As I was getting it ready to sell both the number of things needing fixing and my fondness for this configuration grew and I ended up putting the money into many repairs. Batteries, tires, brakes, shocks, oil change and transmission fluid, rear differential service, a leak in the sun main seal. The roof was degrading and needed to be stripped and redone, both big windowx seals leaked and needed to be removed and replaced and one part of the wall rebuilt, the fans were both shot, generator needs work. But it’s coming along well. I got it it for a good test run once the mechanical was done. Look forward to seeing more of your progress!

I recently came across your channel and I'm glad I did because I love the Chinook camper and I'm interested to see what you do to it. Obviously it has some issues but overall it looks really good. Looking forward to watching the process and seeing the completed redo as well as your upcoming "memories" you mentioned. I too am an Oregonian but live in the Southern part.

I'm looking forward to your upcoming renovation videos. Back in 2017 I had a 1997 Chinook Premier. I knew nothing about RVs and vans so I ended up selling it. I wish I had renovated it like you're going to do with yours, but I didn't have the knowledge, expertise or gumption to do it. I'm sure you'll do a great job. Good luck!

It should also have a OBD port under the steering side dash for diagnosing engine trouble. Vehicles produced after 1996 have them. Nice RV. Good luck.

I love it Jaylena. I have friends who have them. They love theirs too. Congrats and I look forward to your update. Try to keep the blinds. You can clean easily. They stay put and completely cover without effort. And they stay put when moving.

Before replacing the vent on that fridge or repairing the generator really consider a 12v compressor fridge and large modern battery system. You've got a fantastic foundation there. Also look out for the oil cooler on that v10 if it has one, my dad's corroded through and pumped most of the oil into the coolant. Huge job fixing that, nearly wrecked the engine. Subscribed to come along for the journey, that's gonna be a very cool home.

  • @fxpthl

Overall this rig looks to be in very good shape for its' age .Obviously the previous owner(s) took very good care of her. Having driven it back from Utah, how did it "run" mechanically? Fuel economy? Any oil usage? Wheel alignment, does it pull in either direction or drive straight? Check the differential for the proper lubricant, better yet, best to change it. Not so sure about the composting toilet idea. Having the black & gray tanks really isn't that big of a deal, as long as you keep them emptied regularly and I used BORAXO in the black tank to keep it clean and not stinky. The V10 is a pretty reliable motor but regular maintenance is Always a way of insuring good operation. I am excited for your upcoming refit and adventures.
