Isabel, the lady has worked for over 40 years as a hairdresser, why would she have learnt professional computer skills when she had a profession already? She could not have anticipated the arthritis problems that have hit her at about 60! Have you done a job for 40 years of being on your feet for 8 hours a day and using your hands 8 hours a day? You clearly rely heavily on the professional skills of hairdressers yourself, so do not speak to this woman as if she has been sitting on her backside all her life when she has been tending the heads of people just like you since you were still in Primary school.
Why should she retrain because she already had a profession? Well she just said she's unable to do that profession anymore, that's why. She said she left school in 85/86 so she must be have been born in 1970 making her 54 now. My parents are in their 60s my grandparents are in their 80s, none used computers at school and have learned to use them. Being a hairdresser also doesn't prevent you from learning. I don't know about that woman's situation, she obviously had other health issues going on. But simply being the age of 54 is not a valid reason for not knowing how to use a computer. Most jobs will train you and if they won't then most colleges offer free evening classes for adults. Enough of the pandering to these weak feeble excuses.
@@davidneverdave The lady said she has arthritis amongst other issues. There is also a big difference between using a computer for leisure and in a professional environment...and it might have escaped your notice but quality retraining and getting reemployed in your 50s to 60s is not the same as the opportunities when you are somewhat younger. My main objection to Oakeshotts attitude is that she was saying the woman should have acquired work based computer skills in order to be employable, when the woman was actually employed for 40 years with professional skills...just is a different kind of profession. I don't suppose Oakeshott has the skills the caller has...why not? She has had all her life to acquire professional hairdressing skills! My Mum is approaching 80, and she worked in offices and therefore acquired computer skills through her work and continues to use her computer in a leisure context, however, she would not be familiar with Excel and as someone who has arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome and torn ligaments in both shoulders and worn joints that's had to be shaved due to splintering, plus 4 surgeries to try and alleviate the pain, the time she can spend on mouse and keyboard is very limited and very slow now....although she used to be a 120wpm typist. My mums arthritis, carpal tunnel and shoulder problems happened before retirement age and I watched her try to carry on in agony. My mum never cries, stoic lady, but I have seen tears running down her face with the pain in her hands and wrists, they swell, go scarlett and you can feel the heat emanating from them...but she will still try to get through whatever needs doing. So, stick your judgement, someone who has worked for 40 years and is in their mid 50s is clearly not lazy and work shy!
@@shelleyphilcox4743 I acknowledged that the lady had other health conditions. She never said she couldn't use computers because of her arthritis, she said it was because of her age and that she was never taught to use one. I simply said being 54 is not a valid excuse, for the reasons I've already stated. Why shouldn't the woman retrain? Plenty of people do it all the time and many of them have health conditions, which employers have a legal duty to make reasonable adjustments to accommodate for. Of course Oakeshott doesn't have 40 years of experience being a hairdresser - I fail to see how this is relevant? Your 80 year old mother is not expected to work, however someone who is 54 is expected to work - so again I fail the see the relevance of you mentioning her... Thanks for the advice but someone who is 54 years old and says she can't use a computer 'as she was never taught how to use one is school' is clearly trying to come up with any excuse to get out of working. And I will freely express my thoughts on the matter and call out silly feeble excuses wherever I see them.

We have nearly a million job vacancies in the UK at the moment. Enough of the weak feeble excuses!
It seems like they are going after people with mental health issues. If the people who are going to do these assessments are anything like Atos or Maximus then expect a huge uptick in suicides. I completely changed my view of the two journalists on this programme after hearing their views.Anybody with experience of the DWP knows that irrespective of the genuineness of a claim, the amount of supporting medical evidence and written references, personal testimonials, etc. they are always looking to remove you from the register although you and most probably your parents have paid in all your life before illness. I don't think the taxpayer should or is as worried about this as they are or should be about the immigrant crisis. What about the billions paying for that and the billions lost due to the unecessary measures during the pandemic? Its all a distraction to go after the weak and vulnerable again as they are an easy target. Sunak has probably been looking at a leaf in Cameron's book. We should have money for such people, the vast majority are I suspect genuine and have illnesses that have been diagnosed by consultants and not GPs and are regularly assessed by the DWP anyway.
@@davidneverdaveunless you change the way ageism works, you think anyone is going to hire a 54 year old with no previous office experience?
@@benfletcher9659 Oh give over. I work with A LOT of people in their 40's, 50's and 60's. Has this woman tried looking for work? I'm sure she would have said if she'd been knocked back from jobs and she suspects it'd due to ageism. She also wouldn't have to declare health conditions like arthritis until after a job offer had been made, which the employer would have a legal duty to make accommodations for. We have nearly a million job vacancies in the UK at the moment. Enough of the weak feeble excuses!
It seems like they are going after people with mental health issues. If the people who are going to do these assessments are anything like Atos or Maximus then expect a huge uptick in suicides. They aren't clinically trained to assess complex mental health problems, or infact trained to diagnose a common cold.
Because it's the kings government, do you honestly think this government is to serve the people?, your wrong, it's a millionaires government, we the people don't have a government, when will the people wake up and create our own government, that serves the people.
Doctors are going to be ignored while the DWP box tickers will be signing genuinely mentally ill people to what could be a life of misery. Let's not forget these people suffering depression and so on might be mums and Dad's of children who need their parents to get well asap.
I believe Atos and Maximus are first and foremost about Money in their policy, and not mental health, Ch4 dispatches programme went under cover and they aren't medically qualified to say about conditions and disabilities, so it's not about disabilities with them it's just about money, just the same policy that these politicians have, it's about money and more money in their own pockets through the taxpayers pot! Where they couldn't careless about the actual disability condition, or physical ailments. Don't think for one moment that these politicians the likes of Rishi Sunak have any idea about the disabled, the poor or working classes anyway, they have zero understanding and have no wish to understand them at the same time, they are in their own little rich world and want to stay there! As far as i am concerned they don't do the job/career of a politician , they just can't be bothered doing the work, although they like taking the money for it and giving themselves double pay for it at the same time! I think you can only describe at best these Atos and Maximus agencies as 'Glorified Accountants' not medically qualified to the job, not that of a GP anyway!

You would actually be worse off working…..
Most supermarkets mainly hire part time staff on contracts between 10 to 15 hours or zero hour contracts. Unfortunately they may not even get paid for all the hours they work either because the companies take time off for any breaks. So someone on a 15 hour pw contract working for 5 hours per day, 3 days per week will only get paid for 14 hours and 15 minutes. This is evil and the people like Oakeshott that are going along with it are ignorant and far removed from the reality of the situation, coming from posh backgrounds and privilege. But then, to be fair, journalism died during Covid and they are too stupid to realise the lies they condemn that we were fed during that debacle come from the same source which they eagerly rush to believe on this topic.
Oakshott given an undeserved platform yet again.

Yasmin is so out of touch with the reality of way too many youngsters and thinking that too many in politics would agree with her is the reason we are in this situation. SAD
There is a vein in the Tory mindset and it's the attitude to mental health. The problem is that there are always people who 'swing the lead'. The Tories have always specialised in disinformation. This woman Isabelle says she is an expert in ' common sense'. Of course the medical doctor who has had at least 10 years of training is unqualified to make that diagnose. This caller 1/2 of people are capable of work. It's called anecdotal evidence. So she simply reflects her own experience. Unfortunately she is not speaking to the other people who are in the majority. This demonising of the sick and infirm is how Tories always justify their atrocious attitudes
