The priest is one of the most under appreciated actors in the movie. He just sits quietly making faces as Salieri talks, but his expressions are important to the flow of emotions as the story unfolds.

I agree. By the end, he is weeping and, I believe, has lost his faith. And he wasn't even a character in the original Play; he was invented out of whole cloth for the film!

My favorite scenes are when it cuts back to Salieri's retelling with the priest. He is such a fan of Mozart he can't help himself. His vocabulary and command of language is so perfect it somehow takes me to the point of laughing with tears in my eyes. He is such a mess but shines brighter describing Mozart than any other time in the film. It is like he was waiting his whole life to finally cry out to God, from his heart, for once.

Exactly...it's like he desperately wants to hate Mozart because he's such a petulant child, but Salieri's true passion is music, and he can't dent how incredible Mozart is with it. He's at once unbelievably jealous and in awe. Incredible acting on both parts, but especially Salieri's...particularly the subtle expressions of emotion as he reads through his music and tells the priest about it.

Well, it really is filled with so many inaccuracies in order to entertain. Nearly all great composers of previous ages had fascinating lives, filled with enough intrigue, humor and passion without the need for total fabrication. Like Immortal Beloved or Impromptu.
Hollywood manages to trivialize, sexualize and dumb down most histories. I loved Amadeus as a young man, but thankfully I understand the differences between total entertainment and history. Many walked away from the play and the film mis-informed. Entertained, but sadly mis-informed on Mozart, Salieri, Vienna and the entire true and fascinating stories of these people and this era.

Suzanne Murphy (the soprano singing the aria) is FLAWLESS. Other sopranos specially in the highest notes of the score become lazy and just make one continuous sound rather than proper form. This woman on the other hand hit every single note with precision and grace. Truly my favorite soprano of all time!

Mozart singing his opera along with the performers as he conducts is wonderful. He's like a child playing with his new toys on Christmas morning. Compare this to his visible emotional pain later in the film as he conducts Don Giovanni.

And then compare his emotional pain with his emotional AND physical pain when conducting "Die Zauberflöte," where he collapses and is carried to his deathbed.

I disagree that this is the most beautiful scene in *Amadeus*. That scene is where Salierie describes the Serenade in B flat... that is the most beautiful scene in the movie. JMHO!

Great footage. I love the male dancers as they come strutting out like a bunch of proud peacocks. Is a difficult dance maneouvre. They don't quite synchronize properly, but they're giving it all they've got. It's executed with lots of pomp, and feeling too. It's masculine and athletic like a real sailor man should be depicted as. I Love It. I Get It.

Murray Abraham’s acting on salieri’s jealousy is perfect. I can feel his seeting anger and admiration. Which just turns into frustration. Those feelings are familiar to me and others so to see it acted out blows my mind.

The reason why it’s translated is because the characters are speaking in English instead of German, what they would’ve spoke, so they made it consistent to I guess you could say this “fictional universe” and made the German operas in English and left the rest in their OG languages

My orchestra teacher loved this film, and really wanted to perform the opera pieces from the movie. The local opera company in town was always eager to work with the high school orchestra, but the four years I was in high school we never did Mozart operas, Schumann is what was chosen. I hope he got the chance, he tragically died 4 years after I graduated.

When this film was released in 1984, it was rather startling to see Christine Ebersole, playing this part. I was so accustomed to seeing her on SNL (1981-1982, I think). It was a bit of a "wow" moment, to see her in a period film! My spouse & I were nudging each other and whispering her name. She did very well, and looked so lovely!

A great film, if historically inaccurate. If it was accurate, it would have been a film about Mozart and Salieri having a friendly rivalry marked by mutual respect and admiration. They would also have had something of a bromance going later in the film.
It would have played like a long episode of "The Get Along Gang," and who would want to see that? :)
