I was lucky enough to have an acting master class with Mr. Abraham in the late 90's. He was super tough, but kind at the same time. He had great stories, too. Truly a modern master.
Honestly, this should've been the rare case where both Abraham and Hulce both share the win. Both outstanding, both incredible, both absolutely fantastic.
Tom's performance of Mozart was great, but F. Murray Abraham absolutely deserved this win. If it were possible, they should be up there together, indeed. They brought out the best in each other's performances.
FMA's performance was deep and emotional. He lived, ate and breathed Salieri. He felt his thoughts and his loathings. He felt his absolute envy of Mozart's abilities while at the same admiring this man who clearly had God given talent in the work he produced. All of that, all those emotions, all mixed together and projected without whispering a single word. That is one of the most difficult performances to pull off authentically.
I saw Amadeus when it was released and a fair number of times since then. For about thirty years I thought Hulce should have won the best actor award over FMA. But in the last five years I have grown to appreciate FMA's performance more. kxmode has it exactly right in their post above.

Because Mozart really is a main character in Amadeus. He has almost as much screen time. Hell, his name is the title of the film :) But seriously, as a supporting actor role it just wouldn't be right, even though Tom Hulce would have been more likely to win. IMO it was an impossible decision because I and many people think his performance was as extraordinary and affecting as Abraham's. (I understand why one would think Abraham was unbeatable though.)
Showed Amadeus to my 16 year old and then watched this clip. One of the best movies of all time and F. Murray Abraham brought the role of Salieri to life!!! Amazing actor and well deserved award!
Why? Just another version (with great music) of Hollywood casting the Italian as the villain, insulting Jesus Christ and mocking His church. Same shit, different movie.
Amadeus was going to premiere on cable ca. 1985 and my dad wanted to watch it. I was in my early teens, metalhead, all that. I think it was a Friday night when we sat down in front of the television. Within 30 minutes my dad was asleep as always, whether at home or in the theater. I was glued to the television. That movie changed the whole trajectory of my life.
Not only a brilliant performance in all the scenes when Mozart was alive, Abraham was also totally believable as an old man recalling it more than 30 years later.
I agree. The dialogue between Salieri and the priest is awsome, very emotional. Like when the priest start to sing along and say. - Yes i know that! Thats charmning! I'm sorry i didnt know you wrote that! - ...I didn't. I also like when Salieri try to describe Mozarts music - On the page it looked nothing. The beginning simple, almost comic. Just a pulse - bassoons and basset horns - like a rusty squeezebox. Then suddenly - high above it - an oboe, a single note, hanging there unwavering, till a clarinet took over and sweetened it into a phrase of such delight! This was no composition by a performing monkey! This was a music I'd never heard. Filled with such longing, such unfulfillable longing, it had me trembling. It seemed to me that I was hearing a voice of God.
WalterLiddy He seems like the sweetest man, as well. Makes his performance even more amazing, knowing that his role in the film was so believable you actually think he may be like that in real life. :) Love him.

For corn's sake... why has it taken me 14 years to see this extraordinary film and these two brilliant actors? Fabulous, gentlemen... Tom, I fell in love with you. Murray, you as well.. Keep well
I love F.Murray Abraham, but I feel Hulce's performance is the most memorable one, to this day. He gave Mozart a soul, a face, and a voice that, like his music, transcended time. And that deranged laugh alone deserved an award for best sound editing.
Hulce was so damned good in Amadeus. Apples and oranges between him and Abraham. It would've been magnificent if they could've given it to both of them.
A very gracious, if short, acceptance speech. F. Murray Abraham certainly deserved his Oscar, but I agree with him that a double win with Tom Hulce would have been most satisfying. They both brought historical characters to life, and I cried for both of them in the end of the movie!
Mozart was a less complex character (in the movie) and had the real Mozart's music buoying him up. BTW, the movie led to a revival of interest in Salieri, who IRL was friends with both Mozart and Beethoven, I think Beethoven's teacher at one point, and a pallbearer at his funeral. They were all part of the elite of their time and respected each other. Salieri was conservative, and his music went out of fashion as the new generation of romantics arrived.
This really puts a spin on the movie "Amadeus." Salieri is not only chosen over Mozart, but when Salieri gets the award, he says nice things about Mozart.
Just watched Amadeus for the first time last night. So so deserving. And so so true that Tom should be standing with him. Their performances were fantastic
What a class act. Well done Mr. Abraham! To his credit, Hulce was clearly very happy for Abraham. It was really great of Abraham to acknowledge Hulce, as well. They both knew the strength of their performances depended on the other.
That movie made me literally falling in love with Mozart's music and his personality... After that movie I started listening and understanding classical music!!!! Wonderful and intence...
The way in which F. Murray and Tom Hulce fed and played off each other in this incredible film causes me to feel a double Best Actor Oscar was due here. What amazing performances!
This is wonderful. I've never been more touched by a film than Amadeus and Abraham's performance is truly a once in a century performance. Milos Forman is a brilliant director who picked a perfect cast to make the perfect film.
The raw energy of the audience response when Abraham's name was first read says all you need to know. And they played Salieri's welcome march for Mozart as Abraham walked to the stage. How brilliant!
Out of all the movies I have watched, AMADEUS is the only Movie that should have 2 actors winning the best Actor Award. Yes, it is a tie...and rightfully so. Both of them were amazing in their roles.
One of my favorite actors of all time. Everything he does is memorable, and he's always a class act. Quite a handsome man he was, too. I love this guy.
"there's only one thing that's missing for me tonight, and that's to have tom hulce standing by my side". ❤❤ oh my darling Hulce.. You deserve more than the Oscar ❤
I had only seen F. Murray in Scarface before seeing Amadeus a few years later and when I realized it was the same actor from Scarface, I knew then, even at the age of 14 that this man was special. His scenes in Amadeus have got to be some of the best in the history of movie making. Definitely Blessed with great talent.
I feel like the Oscars needs a category for like, ‘best enemies’ or ‘best comedic duo’….you know to get two actors up on stage together winning based on the strength of both of their performances. You know, like ‘Lethal Weapon’. Comedic cop duo.
I remember this. Abraham's name was announced (Hulce's reaction made me smile!), and I just knew that he was going to get onstage and say, "So Mozart didn't get the last laugh after all... Grazie, Signore!" And then... No. He was all class, gave Hulce his moment as well, and I was so impressed. Not too shabby for the Patron Saint of Mediocrity!
Because the directors cut is clear and above the best dramatic movie of all time, while the theatrical release was disjointed enough to make it seem subpar. If you've seen the directors cut you'd know just how unmatched this performance was.
Corey Pack Sorry I thought you were serious. The terminator was not a movie for oscar of course but it was the movie who made schwarzenegger a huge star.
Just the way he so elegantly pranced up the steps, to the measured pause when he met Shirley, respectfully greeting her and accepting the award….and then the way his hand so smoothly slides under the the bottom of the statue. Captivating.
Abraham as Salieri was absolutely FANTASTIC!!! but Tom Hulce did such an amazing job too they complimented each other so well in Amadeus it's such a shame that he couldn't stand up there with him.
Exactly! Not only more humility but the Oscars back then were all about talent. I don't think they had the disgusting political propaganda and catwalk with the dresses or the bad jokes that even the actors who are present in the ceremony can't even laugh with!
I'm 19 and I'm studying acting. The synergy between these two actors and the level of commitment to their characters created an immortal film. In passing, I commented that neither of them used a fashionable technique at the time called "the method" that involves putting mental health at stake. They prove that classic acting techniques give great results.
Tom Hulce's performance was absolutely tremendous--but IMHO F Murray Abraham's performance of Salieri is the most inspired acting I've ever seen on the big screen!
No actor ever deserved it more. It was perhaps the best performance I've ever seen, and I've seen some great performances. Actors are, at times, insecure, prickly and vain. I suppose they suffer from the same ills that afflict us all. But, they also possess this wonderful ability to hold us in their magic spell.
Tom Hulce’s reaction when F. Murray Abraham is called is one of the most precious things I’ve seen

Nick Mayor based on yr complaint the oscar board took away all awards and the movie was destroyed
I would imagine that you never saw the play on Broadway?
That movie made me literally falling in love with Mozart's music and his personality... After that movie I started listening and understanding classical music!!!! Wonderful and intence...
The way in which F. Murray and Tom Hulce fed and played off each other in this incredible film causes me to feel a double Best Actor Oscar was due here. What amazing performances!
Just rewatched the movie after so many years, both actors were brilliant, such enjoyable performances.
This is wonderful. I've never been more touched by a film than Amadeus and Abraham's performance is truly a once in a century performance. Milos Forman is a brilliant director who picked a perfect cast to make the perfect film.
Tom Hucle was so happy for him. Love it!!! And then for Abraham to say what he said was just all the better!!
Haaa, little Gae 😅
The raw energy of the audience response when Abraham's name was first read says all you need to know.
And they played Salieri's welcome march for Mozart as Abraham walked to the stage. How brilliant!
It wasn't Salieri's welcome composition for Mozart at all.
@@MissBooful You're right, I was mistaken.
Out of all the movies I have watched, AMADEUS is the only Movie that should have 2 actors winning the best Actor Award. Yes, it is a tie...and rightfully so. Both of them were amazing in their roles.
Tom should have been nominated for Best Supporting Actor instead, which he almost certainly would have won.
One of my favorite actors of all time. Everything he does is memorable, and he's always a class act. Quite a handsome man he was, too. I love this guy.
Hulce deserved best actor too, they were both incredibly good.
"there's only one thing that's missing for me tonight, and that's to have tom hulce standing by my side". ❤❤
oh my darling Hulce.. You deserve more than the Oscar ❤
"Half of this goes to my wife."
AirGunWarriors What do you think we are ? Baggage handlers ?
3:00 His reaction! So sweet, I think he was mesmerized too.
Mr. Hulce deserves a Oscar too, the Oscars are so unfair!!!
imagine if they tied? historical
I feel like the Oscars needs a category for like, ‘best enemies’ or ‘best comedic duo’….you know to get two actors up on stage together winning based on the strength of both of their performances. You know, like ‘Lethal Weapon’. Comedic cop duo.
I Met F. Murray and he is SOO Sweet and Nice.. WHAT an AMAZING Actor!!!! He DESERVED This!! xoxoxoo
Well spoken Mr. Abraham.
When Oscars was an elegant event...
Definitely! Murray knocked it out of the park
I love how gracefully he accepted his Oscar and she gave him a kiss. So sweet. He’s brilliant
One of the FINEST actors of the last 50 years in Hollywood ....a MONSTER talent and a really great person.
Such a humble speech. True class!
Seeing Hulce mouth "Yes!" when Abraham won was definatly a highlight. Happy to see his costar win.
What a great year that was!
The best movie and the best role in the history of the cinema
eh, second at best. Your thumbnail photo however, ah, now there lies the truth of your above fore mentioned statement.
I don't think either movie holds that statement, but that's just my opinion. Enjoy
Because the directors cut is clear and above the best dramatic movie of all time, while the theatrical release was disjointed enough to make it seem subpar. If you've seen the directors cut you'd know just how unmatched this performance was.
Amadeus great film.
Peter from Czech republic.
Maxfield Nuckels all three including your thumbnail are some of the best
Also Tom Hulce (as Amadeus) deserved to get the oscar...
I know! They should have put him in the Supporting Actor category. He would have won that one.
he was very good but Murray Abraham was even better. this oscar is deserved
I agree with you.
Totally agree!!!
Ya he did
Saw this move as a young kid, couldn't understand what was going on. Saw this movie last Saturday and was blown away.
Hollywood at its best ✨✨✨All of the nominees were absolutely wonderful and worthy of the Oscar ✨✨✨
Tom Hulce’s reaction is the most precious thing I’ve ever seen 🥺
That best actor Oscar REALLY helped Abraham's career.
senorkaboom I don't think he could have topped this performance even if it did.
senorkaboom He chose to be an actor, not a star. He's been a working actor ever since he won. Something 90% of all actors in SAG can't say.
+Corey Pack The Terminator was an adventure not a drama. Usually dramatic movies are nominated for Oscars.
Corey Pack Sorry I thought you were serious. The terminator was not a movie for oscar of course but it was the movie who made schwarzenegger a huge star.
@Rusty Amadeus is a biography and 100% drama.Mozart's laughter doesn't make it a comedy.
1:46 reaction of Hulce on Hurray just like the reaction of Mozart to Salieri during Salier's opera and emperor awarding him.
F. Murray Abraham was brilliant...brilliant.
Love how much F. Murray Abraham and Tom Hulce clearly like each other.
Which is great because they both seem like absolute sweethearts.
Just the way he so elegantly pranced up the steps, to the measured pause when he met Shirley, respectfully greeting her and accepting the award….and then the way his hand so smoothly slides under the the bottom of the statue. Captivating.
F Murray Abraham, man, what an actor and what gravitas. Simply the best
Abraham as Salieri was absolutely FANTASTIC!!! but Tom Hulce did such an amazing job too they complimented each other so well in Amadeus it's such a shame that he couldn't stand up there with him.
Is it me, or did actors accept awards with a bit more grace and humility back then.....
Exactly! Not only more humility but the Oscars back then were all about talent. I don't think they had the disgusting political propaganda and catwalk with the dresses or the bad jokes that even the actors who are present in the ceremony can't even laugh with!
They could actually speak back then and express themselves with eloquence. And none of this nonsense of thanking everyone and their dog 🙄
Just you, i find it so amusing how people nitpick everything pertaining to the modern day.
It's you
I'm 19 and I'm studying acting.
He should have said "Finally i beat mozart... Grazie signore"
that would be so funny
Oh shit yeah
Guarantee you he thought about it the second he walked of the stage and regrets it to this day.
I absolve you. I absolve you. And I absolve you, too.
That would have been immensely cheesy, an very far from the characters of Abraham as well as Salieri.
Hulce looked so genuinely happy for his colleague. Such class.
How gracious and eloquent can you be?!?!
One of the VERY FINEST actors of the last 50 years...his performance is required study at The Juilliard School... A MONSTER of a talent.
