What you need to do is restart and keep shift pressed down for ages until it prompts a login the login then restart again and hold down opt, ctr, R until the recovery mode shows after like a 4 min wait and then you see the Apple logo then you have to click install Mac OS bit and then Mac OS Catalina shows I was stuck on mountain lion for agessss and stayed up so late

You don’t have to do any of this all you have to do is backup your iTunes library on an external hard drive then when your Mac prompts you to create a library just select your music library that’s on your external hard drive
