I wish I had his tone. Its perfect, never drops a note, and isn't fuzzy about anything. All the jumps he does come out clean, and I can't say enough for what he's doen for the instrument. He'll be sorely missed.
I'm embarrassed that Nick flew under my radar. What an amazing musician. Incredible richness in very lyrical style and hard driving at the same time. His changes are amazing. Thank you Maurice for this gem.
Finally, the rare Keilwerth low Bb bari sax makes an appearance! I have searched everywhere, and can't find any pictures on the net anywhere! And he is certainly doing it justice. I think I may have to get one of these.
Heard Nick many times when I was growing up in Schenectady, NY. Caught him around 1992 in St. Paul, MN when he guested with the Century Jazz Orchestra and caught in concert at the Lark in Albany in 1994 when I was on tour. He was a great talent and a nice guy and then some. A big loss to the music World.
Great stuff! My dad's cousin played in Nick Brignola's big band back in the 70s - he was a sax player named Chick Esposito, and he did some arrangements for the group. I'm trying to track down some of those arrangements, so if anyone happens to know any info, I would really appreciate it!
I play a Selmer Mk VI with a custom modified 5* Link. I'd put that mouthpiece up with any. Funny, when I play it somehow doesn't come out like when Nick plays. Guess I'll have to buy a Keilwirth… or maybe find out what dimension Mr. Brignola came from and move there. I've been around a while and NOBODY comes close to Nick Brignola on Bari.
Neither do I practise (But I play tenor and soprano, not baritone). I don't even warm up before a gig. I just go straight in to the first set. It feels totally unfamiliar after a month of not playing at all and the fingers are so stiff; but after the first number everything is fine. I've got more interesting things to do than to sit practising.
made the switch from alto to bari (well i still play alto in my ska band) and the size is the only bad part. the thing is huge, but it's so much better than alto.
Nick Brignola, Is my no.1 Bari man and a close second;Pepper Adams. the other 2 I like are Ronnie Cuber&Mulligan. There are other one's I like, but, these guy's are the best and Nick is better than that. Question;Doesn't his brother also play Bari, and was with Woody Herman ? CELLITOONS
Remember that just because someone says they don't practice doesn't mean they never did. I think this guy is full of shit haha, but I know some professionals who practice as little as 10-20 on any given day; on the weekends they usually practice a bunch though. They say they just got most of their practicing in already young adulthood/college. Just throwing that out there.
What??That's an insane comment.....or an ignorant one! Nick has his own style and has played this way for ever. Pepper is brilliant, but his approach and Nicks's is different. If you can't hear that, start listening to polka music or something!
Vic Glazer Haha, wasn't meant to be taken as seriously as it was. You cannot deny the similarities in their playing from the heavy use of the tounge and brash attack. I respect him and his work with everything that he's done and I'm a big fan, it's just an opinion, simmer down.

One of the great master's of the horn got too be in the top 5 all time greats takeing no prisoners, RIP Nick
Simply a genius expression of barisax playing!
I'm embarrassed that Nick flew under my radar. What an amazing musician. Incredible richness in very lyrical style and hard driving at the same time. His changes are amazing. Thank you Maurice for this gem.
Joel Lee Oberstone along with Ronnie Cuber they are the top 2 bari players in the world.
Nick was the best Bari player ever. I grew up in the same area and got to play with him a few times. Absolute Jazz Monster.
I was fortunate enough to be able to sit in with his band one time.

Great, great playing. What a guy.
Had the pleasure seeing him @ Tiny's in Utica, NY when I still lived up there. Absolutely amazing...

I played bass with Nick in the '70's. He was the best. For what it's worth he claimed he never practiced and played a Fibercane 5 reed.

the great class
Someone said he used a Strathon Ajusta on one of the comments from my other Brignola videos.
Great player. Never knew he was a doubler though. I'd like to hear him on clarinet and sop sax.

Bari is awesome, but I still play saprano, alto, tenor, and bari. I've played them all at one gig too.
wow good playing! but why so harsh comments? just have fun listening to the music
Quem da um LIKE negativo?. Não acredito este musico toca muito. Quem deu um LIKE negativo deve ser um gênio.

Guarantee his baritone is worth about 8, 000, god i wish i could have his bari sax.
He's using a Strathon Adjustatone You can see the movable baffle on top.
See description (click on: more)
@calism23 i believe he uses a lawton

Mike Brignola was no relation
shouldn't you be practicing?

This is gotta be one of the oldest videos on YT
go practice
Always thought he sounded like a rip off Pepper Adams...
What??That's an insane comment.....or an ignorant one! Nick has his own style and has played this way for ever. Pepper is brilliant, but his approach and Nicks's is different. If you can't hear that, start listening to polka music or something!
By the way, their tone is totally different.

Sorry man, I get a little defensive when guys who are "judged" are gone and can't defend themselves either in person or in print.
No problem!
thumbs down.
