This guy was a monster, the like of which we may never see again. His and Pepper Adams' album "Baritone Madness" is a gift from God. Nick told it like it is. Like a lot of geniuses, he left us too early.
Nick is just amazing. He has conquered all of the inherent difficulties of playing the baritone sax such as intonation, the amount of air required to fill the instrument and playing in the upper register and altissimo range. He really makes the instrument sing.
Thank you for posting this great musician. I thought Pepper Adams and Gerry Muliigan were "it." However, Nick is such an amazing technical, lyrical, and hard swinging bari, that I now have a trio of favorite baritone saxophonists. Wow.
We here in the Capital Distrcit area were blessed to have Nick playing nearby for so many years....I knew his father, and was good friends with his Uncle and Aunt...and miss his artistry so very much. I still can't believe he is gone. DOWNBEAT MAGAZINE worldwide readers chose him as one of the best sax players in he worlld....right around his release of his 'THIS IS IT'" album,as I recall. What a loss to the jazz world!
Thank you for posting this amazing clip of Nick Brignola.. New to me, but his technique and beautiful phrasing has knocked me out ! Never heard a bari played like this...
not sure about the reeds.. but it sounds like a fairly soft tip (fuzziness and quick response) with a solid heart (awesome intonation and full sound) I know that he used a Strathon Adjustatone mouthpiece. It has an adjustable baffle, usually up high.. that gives him such an effortless altissimo respose! Very tough to get on a bari without a very narrow chamber and high baffle!! Those mouthpieces are amazing, but very hard to find!
You can really tell that he was a humble musician. RIP Nick, may you entertain the heavens with your beautiful music
The Boardwalk & Park Place of Jazz ballads Victor Young/Ned Washington...... Thank you, Nick, Phil, John & Rick
Lucky enough to play with Nick back in the early 70's when I was at RPI. Total class guy - RIP Nick.

No one plays the bari like Nick did; his ballad playing on bari is just killing. Tears every time I hear him. Thanks for that great video.

deep playing and feel.
Very enjoyable...thanks
Man that drummerless CD About Time with Holland/bass and Barron/piano is truly the shit. This great great master was a hell of a claranetist as well .
