Tom Brier, The Entertainer

  • Please keep Tom in your thoughts. Saturday he was critically injured in a traffic accident and remains in intensive care with head injuries, broken ribs and a punctured lung. They are keeping him sedated to assist in the reduction of brain swelling. Best case scenario, he should continue to be sedated for several weeks, I'm told through a friend who spoke to another friend who had gone to see him. UPDATE: Tom's brother has set up a CaringBridge site where he will post updates on Tom's condition. www.caringbrid...
From happier times, here is a rare instance of him playing Scott Joplin music solo, recorded during the Santa Cruz Ragtime Festival this past February.
You pretty much can't play ragtime in public without someone requesting to hear "The Entertainer". Tom couldn't remember the intro (until the very end when you hear him play it quickly), so he just breaks straight into the first strain here.
This rag was published in 1902. It is in the public domain, so you can download the sheet music from the Library of Congress: www.loc.gov/it...
While not a particularly big hit in its day, it became a huge hit in the early 1970s, when a recording from the soundtrack of the movie "The Sting" reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop music chart, and #1 on the Billboard Easy Listening chart. I must admit: that recording is what hooked me into ragtime as a child.

I love everything about this video, but I especially love how you can pinpoint the music lovers as they casually filter through. A lot of them will turn their heads, some will slow down as they walk, but there's one who really catches my attention. It's the little Tom Sawyer kid, who walks up around 2:52. He stands transfixed by Tom's playing for a few moments, then, when he's obviously called back by his parent, he dances off. He probably won't remember this particular instance in his life, but the fact that Tom's playing was so effective that it captivated the attention of a child for just a few moments -- well, that speaks volumes about the power of music, and the kind of joy that Tom brought into the world. It's a tragedy that his musical light has been dimmed, but I hope and pray that he'll work his way back to the piano one day. In the interim, I'm so happy that these videos exist, because they remind me about just how wonderful the world is, even when it seems so bleak.

I won't see him soon as I'm too far away (unless some folks plan to visit during this weekend's ragtime festival in Sutter Creek), but even so my understanding is he will remain unconscious for several weeks, maybe a couple months. The festival will be tough to enjoy without him. We're still getting over the loss of Kitty Wilson, the washboard player seen in many of my videos playing with Tom and others. Tom had better stay with us!!

This news makes me incredibly sad... When I first saw his works a couple years ago on reddit I watched everything by him. I showed everyone who I thought would appreciate his incredible talent. I ended up downloading a couple of my favorite songs from youtube, and listened to them frequently, almost obsessively. The last few years have been extremely stressful, and his music helped to keep me leveled. Even though things have gotten better for me, I still watch my favorite songs by him and remember how much they have helped. Hearing about him now, and reading through his brother's site leaves me remarkably sad again. His unbelievable talent, his interpretation of so many songs is a gift, one that I am so grateful for. To Tom and his family... thank you.

Tom always plays the lesser known ragtime pieces so not surprised that this would not be automatic for him to play (of the better known ragtime pieces, I remember him preferring Maple Leaf Rag growing up) - Knowing him since childhood, I can't imagine him wanting to play the Entertainer unless requested and he always is willing to respect audience requests! Speedy Recovery Tom!

As for Maple Leaf, there's a video from last year where he plays it in all 12 major keys with Daniel Souvigny. So much fun. Another video, which I haven't posted yet, has him and Brian Holland playing it in a few keys. Some there called it the best rendition they've ever witnessed. There will be such a void this weekend at Sutter Creek. Every ragtime festival I've been to, since 1992, Tom has been there. We always have been roommates in Sutter Creek.

I hope Tom will get well. I know no-one that knows his ragtime better than Tom and there's much yet that he can do. I hope you recovers well and retains his masterful abilities.
I also hope you still get to enjoy the festival, as you carry him with you like many others.
