  • Ruth Elizabeth "Bette" Davis (5th April 1908 - 6th October 1989) was an American actress of film, television, and theatre. Regarded as one of the greatest actresses in Hollywood history, she was noted for her willingness to play unsympathetic, sardonic characters and was reputed for her performances in a range of film genres, from contemporary crime melodramas to historical and period films and occasional comedies, although her greatest successes were her roles in romantic dramas.

    Davis always gave sincere answers in her interviews, throughout her career. You can see it clearly in her initial reaction to the questions. Nothing phony. Sometimes, though, she did say things that weren't true but she thought were true.

    Interesting and 1st lovely interview!
    Bette Davis’s voice was distinct, and unmistakable and for me excellent to listen to, which aside from her ‘ Bette Davis eyes’ powerful acting,was her main attraction to me as a young girl when I first saw her on BBC TV in the 1960’s when they were repeating her excellent movies. The Joan Bakewell interview brought out Miss Davis’s humour beautifully,! I was in the audience in Bournemouth in the 1970’’s when she invited questions and was asked when she lost her virginity! I was so embarrassed but her reply was priceless, ‘ the first night of my marriage, when did you loose yours?Fabulous response!! The audience response was a great round of applause 👏👍😊

    I always heard and read that Bette was a very difficult woman to work and be with. Watching this video proved otherwise. She is a charming, witty, and pretty much adorable and pleasant woman. She never dissed any of her peers nor say any negative about them. She was really one of the Hollywood's greatest dames ever... Sadly, her only biological daughter doesn't recognize that...

    • @MarthaMansbridge
      @MarthaMansbridge Рік тому +3

      She did have that reputation but it was mostly the press - it seemed fair game to accuse her of being difficult but she said herself, and was often backed up by others, she fought for quality not for her own ego. A lot of stuff about her is forgotten, like her strong support for equality for black actors, for other actors who were getting a raw deal - Ann Margaret recalled Bette taking her aside and encouraging her to ensure she was properly lit, properly made up and able to shine - Geraldine Fitzgerald debunked her reputation when she worked with her on Dark Victory and did not, in fact, insist on being the centre of attention - there were many like minded ‘stars’ she worked with that became lifelong friends as a result. Bette didn’t seem to get along with vain or egotistical stars.

    I am so torn about Bette Davis. She is definitely one of my favorite actresses and nothing will change that. There are so many stories of her being a bitch (and a whore) but in this and some other interviews I've seen she seems like such a lovely person, not too full of herself ( all actors have to be to a certain extent) , gracious, polite, classy, intelligent. And she seems like a loving mother. Looks can be deceiving of course, but she really seems affectionate and there is not a hint in the daughter's demeanor to contradict that.
    Fast forward to many years later when this same daughter wrote horrible things about her mother, while she was still alive! Now I don't want to call her a liar just because I like her mom, but from the multitude of people who knew them and contradict her accusations, it does seem like she was just trying to sell a book. I mean, I love Joan Crawford's acting as well but I have always tended to believe her daughter's book " "Mommy dearest" ,perhaps as I can relate because I went through some of the same stuff with my own mother and her story ( in my opinion) rings true.
    But what I really can't get over is how she sent her youngest daughter to live in an institution all her life. I had thought, when it was said " we couldn't take care of her," that she had some severe physical handicap, which, at least in those days, one could at least partially understand how she felt she couldn't handle the situation. But now I have read that " at 8 years old she was like a four year old" and that she "can't read and write" ! That sounds like a mild to medium case of mental retardation, and ( as the mother of a daughter with a cognitive disability myself) there is no reason in this world that she couldn't be taken care of at home. It does sound like she was sent away because they were ashamed. Or didn't have the patience. I have tried to be charitable and understand that that was common practice in those days. Beverly Sills, the great NY City soprano did the same to her daughter. I suppose they thought it was " good for them". But I can't help finding it terribly sad and selfish. Certainly they had the resources to hire a specialized kind of nanny. I mean after all , one was found even many years before, for Hellen Keller, it is not like they couldn't have found other options. It is very hard for me to get past it, I must say.
