I live on the 60th latitude, which means that in Summer there is an overflow of light and in Winter not so much. In December the sun is up for six hours. In Winter I wear brighter colors: green, blue and pink, mainly in sweaters and scarves. In Summer I like to wear white, navy and grey. I own a small orange scarf and a pair of orange loafers. I wear them in Summer with my navy and white outfits as a pop of color. IMO there are so many reasons, why people wear what they wear and they are all valid reasons.🐩👕🧥🧦🧦

I had a chuckle thinking only the non rich would worry about what they look like to others. Luxury is fine, long term thinking is also fine (although that might be a hangover from haute couture, which was so expensive, it had to last a few years). In the movie "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes", Marilyn Monroe is wearing a rather orange dress in a major scene (while Jane Russell wears black dress).
