Love your work Starsky. I grew up in UK during the late 70s/early 80s and was captivated by Tubeway Army/Gary Numan at 12 years old. Im now part of Sydney based synth cover band called Voxneon. I think you and Alex Ball are the best content providers on the web bar none. Always interesting and informative with no unnecessary stuff. Stellar work.
The 3rd Wave is really such a nice synth! Mine is paired with an OB-6, then a couple of Elektrons for sequencing and extra bits, and a Cyclone TT-303 for when things need to get acidic. :D Other than a few little odds and ends, I really haven't felt like acquiring any other synths since this pairing. Nice sounds!
Loving this whole series you have assembled. You have organized the series in a good way (e.g., things to do with a saw wave, etc.), but looked at in another way, it's really just a primer on dialing in essential patch types, regardless of specific device. That's incredibly helpful to me and lots of other folks (or so it appears). Thanks!
Simple stuff, yet loads of inspiration here, thanks so much!! What I realized here is that the envelopes of the 3rd Wave seem to be very musically. That's where I feel some (otherwise great sounding) synths struggle a lot. I'll be sitting at my P12 now 🙂
@@StarskyCarr The Summit is incredible, similar to the 3rd Wave. A wonderfull hybrid, but with amazing effects. The chorus sound so analog, the reverb is probably the best reverb I ever ear in a synth. A kind of Eventide Blackhole I don't know why people underestimate this synth
Thanks for this vid. How do you feel the desktop modal compares to the keyboard version? There £1500 in difference in price. Thats a lot so the keyboard version better do more than just look good.
I’d never seen the keyboard version in the flesh until Superbooth last week.. omg it’s gorgeous 😂 there’s difference in functionality - there’s separate knobs for each osc, LFO and env .. but I’ve never found the desktop hard to use. … but now I’ve seen the big one I WANT 😂👍
@@StarskyCarr Haha GASSSSSSSSSS I dont think I could stump up the extra for just that mate. I have watched you and others on here on the desktop and no one seems to have an issue programming. Greetings from Geordieland
Yeah it’s behind me on the right. I don’t think I’ve ever used the granular in it tbh! If I have it must’ve been years ago because I didn’t realise it had one 😂
Novation Summit has 3 very fat oscillators. I was looking seriously at getting a Rev3 but went for the Summit which seemed to offer much more gor a lot less $$.
Yeah.. I think the price difference could be the FPGA vs DCO on the oscillators - but then the Super6 uses FPGA and that's not exactly cheap? So I've just proved myself wrong ;)
man, I love these videos!! And that synth is just sooo creamy. (got sticker shock after looking up the price!).. BTW, completely off topic. REALLY diggin the frames. Can you please tell me what they are?
I liked the specs too. I thought the synth might have been an affordable alternative to all those classic bits of kit Starsky has - until I looked up the price. Behringer version!?
Thanks.. I like making these, but they don’t get the views the new releases do. Interesting that lots of people say they don’t like the UA-camr/new synth stuff - but that’s what everyone watches 😂 the glasses are Saint Laurent. I just picked the ones I liked and turns out they were rather pricey - just like the synths!!
Hi mate, really getting a lot out of this series, thanks. Interested to hear you don't have the Iridium any more. It's one of the ones on my wish list but I understand the sonic character isn't for everyone. Did you have any particular issues with it? That 3rd Wave is stunning. Well out of my price range for now sadly but one day maybe...
I bought the M rather than the Iridium. Mainly because the M had a distinct character and I have other tuff that almost covers what the Iridium can do. All those different engines though are hard to beat. ... like the granular!
@StarskyCarr thanks for the response mate, makes sense. It's the versatility of the Iridium that's appealing to me. I don't have a granular or wavetable hardware synth so it's quite appealing to get one thing that does both well. The fact it also handles samples, VA (and FM?) is a real selling point too
@@StarskyCarr Will you keep the M now that you have the 3rd Wave? I've read of many folks who bought the M for a PPG vibe selling the M after they got the 3W.
I never really thought of pads as user serviceable presets. 🧐 That's like building your own reverb pedal. What kind of nerd tries to build their own reverb pedal? Don't take jobs away from romplers. Pads are THE thing romplers kick ass at. Just go buy a JV-2080 and let it make the pad sounds.
oooh the time I spent editing patches on my JV2080 - torture! But not as bad as the Korg 03R/W that had hemispherical buttons designed for maximum pain.
Keep these coming.
Let's see how popular they are.. .if they go down well I can go on forever!
We LOVE it when you laugh! Keep it up! Great mood, great channel!
😂😂 VL… virtual laughs
Love all your videos, but really loving this series.
This series is invaluable ! Thx so much

Honestly I think you could make a great record with any synth. 👏🏻🚀🔥
Excellent demo! Thanks Starsky - shows the analog on the 3rd Wave to boot. Graphics in the display make it easy to see.
Brilliant
Nice video. Also loving my 3rd wave.
Every time i hear the 3W, I keep thinking about selling my Prophet 6. The 3rd wave just sounds good AND has usable effects...

i've got some Novation VA synths and they're great at this kind of sound.
Yeah, the Novations are great for this. I had a supernova that I used on everything for years.

Nice vid Mr Carr.
Thanks for the video. Here I can found some guides for recreate 'Soundtrack' from roland d-05. Anybody has more hints for it?
It looks so easy when you do it! Many thx 👍🏼
haha.. that's because it is :)
Jupiter-X and Xm have 4 oscillators, and the Juno-X has a supersaw which adds so much to sound creation for that synth too!
Yes. And also the Fantoms with 4 partials per tone.
Nice!
Can you do evolving pads on an FM synth on the fly?
Haha… I might need a few days intensive training first. But I’m planning an FM vid.. so we’ll see!
Korg Monopoly has 4 oscs. Good for detuned pads too.
Yeah, but it's paraphonic, and a bit different
Yo!! on OMDs track almost ...I know they used a korg m500 but can i get close with a standard synth??
absolutely. It's such a simple synth that almost everything (if not everything) can do very similar or the same.
@@StarskyCarr ive tried lol it hard ...if u can help that would be great
There's a Kontakt version of it by tronsonic

Digging the glasses. Got a bit of Eric Morecambe about them.
I’ve held back on the paper bag trick… maybe soon! Ho ho!
