- The BBC licence fee will rise by £10.50 to £169.50 a year, the Culture Secretary has confirmed.
The household payment, which funds much of the corporation’s operations, had been frozen at £159 and was set to rise in line with inflation next year.
However, the expected 9% increase - which would have meant an increase of around £15 from April 2024 - has been reduced, the Government said.
Speaking in the Commons on Thursday, Lucy Frazer said the increase will instead be based on September’s consumer prices index (CPI) rate of inflation which was 6.7%. This will mean an increase of £10.50 to £169.50 per year.
The news comes after the veteran TV executive Dr Samir Shah was named on Wednesday as the Government’s preferred candidate to become BBC chairman.

I am sure that any increase in fees will result in less money coming in, because many people don't mind paying something symbolic, but now it is getting expensive, and life is becoming too expensive to let it go, and the content is so outrageous and damaging, people will cancel licences rather than increase payments

Not to mention the fact that most of what the BBC does is not broadcasting to the UK but in Arabic and other languages, why do we pay for it.

It is not a great institution. It is a corrupt institution and the licence fee should be abolished. They show so many repeats that the licence you already have should cover it. Why pay more for programs you have already watched. Folks don't pay it.

A truly national public service broadcaster would air the range of opinions regularly heard through TalkTV and other outlets. The BBC has declared the debate to be over on the acceptable size of the state, immigration, climate and so many other issues. It justifies the licence fee by posturing as a PSB, then justifies spending to compete with the commercial sector by using the same circular argument; that the fee is paid by everyone and therefore must cater for everyone, even though it is there to go where the commercial operators cannot go. Time for a rethink.
I'm 78 years of age and yet the BBC are still sending me demands for payment of the licence fee.
Threatening me with ""pay your licence now or further action will be taken"" against me.

They are uping the fees as no one watches BBC. TV licence is an outdated and not with the times but for the BBC to survive it needs to do it.

I watched the BBC for a total of 25 mins last week...and maybe 1hr 'others' (live TV).....yeah you aint worth it.
So instead of scraping it you're charging more but why would mps be bothered about this as its just another thing they claim expenses on so costs them nothing

The BBC should become a subscription service on all platforms i.e. digital terrestrial TV digital satellite TV digital cable TV and online.
The BBC Do not make 90% their own programmes anymore . They’re outsourced by independent production companies, invariably using the BBC’s own studios including radio station equipment!!.

Heard some BBC clown being interviewed by a radio channel today making the argument that the license fee represents good value for money compared to Netflix, Disney & other subscriptions channels. Maybe it does (people may argue about the quality of the content) but the subscription channels let me choose whether I with so pay for them and don't harass me on the assumption that I need to pay for the subscription unless I notify them otherwise. Enjoying the demise of this corrupt and entitled organisation.

All families would be better served sorting out a better way of watching TV than trying to finance for an increase in the TVL fee/tax.
Give up on live broadcasts and pay for other services would be my advice. If you even need to be paying for any services whatsoever in all honesty. There is an absolute glut of free to stream content available in the modern online world.

World leading content? Last time I saw Dr who they saved the world by being female, male and non binary. It didn't even fit in the story. It's all well and good saying people need to accept each others differences but there's a time and place, you don't just suddenly shove it into the end of an episode and characters need substance, they can't just hang around whilst people randomly mention they're non binary for no apparent reason. That's the worst foreshadowing I've ever seen. They used to make world leading content but now it's bloody aweful. As for BBC news I trust them as far as I can throw them.
When I moved to my new place and saw an old letter threatening the arrival of inspectors to make sure 'the legal occupier' is not watching TV I remembered this and thought there's no way. I'd rather avoid live broadcasts and the BBC than pay them.

An increase so the BBC can produce even more woke programmes, more lies about British history and pay even more outrageous incomes to it's so called talent. I never watch BBC programmes and detest paying this outdated tax but as I prefer to watch live TV I have to pay it. They should be forced to go commercial or subscription.
Sky rockets? What sort of biased headline making is this? The BBC's contribution to the journalism and the democratic world over the last century has been a force for good, and cheap at the price we paid for it. If we decide that 'because of a cost of living crisis' we no longer want to support the values of the world we would like to live in, then we might balance the books in the short term. But we will end that better world sooner, and lead ourselves to greater inequality and longer term losses.
