Young Martin’s Reels was created to honor my dad Martin B. Stivers of Louisville KY. He was an avid fisherman and repaired thousands of fishing reels in his lifetime. I spent numerous hours watching him do so, but I have forgotten most of what he taught me. Now that he is gone, and I find myself in need of reel repair, so I am learning how it is done and trying my best to pass it on.
If I can be of assistance, feel free to contact me Rick48cj2a@yahoo.com
I would also like to thank Dennis Kuntz of 2nd Chance Tackle. His videos have helped to fill in the gaps in my “reel” knowledge. Without his UA-cam videos I’m afraid Young Martin’s Reels would not exist.

I left that clutch spring dry (no grease) on my Kmart 55 reel. Its internal parts are identical to the South Bend 1140. My reasoning was the reel spring needs as much friction as possible to hold that clutch hub stationary.

Dan, I greased it to protect against rust. I think the spring is holding plenty tight without going dry. Besides, it was greased when I got them so I put them back the way I found them.

I found one of these with a rod in a flee market. It looked interesting so I paid $5.00 for it. It is clean and works well. I stripped the old line off and setting it up with WF5F. I hope i got the right weight. No ID on the rod.

Hello Richard, I have a SB Oren-O-Matic No1140 Model D and the clutch will not engage. I've taken apart several times, cleaned, reassembled, made sure the spring is catching, and still nothing. What am I missing? Thank you for your time, Wayupnorthofhwy8.

I’m going to venture a guess that the problem is with the ratchet knob you see at the 3:30 point in my video that I did not take apart. If could have old dried grease bound up in there. You might try soaking that part in WD40 for a few days. Add some compressed air to force it up into the works. Keep soaking it and blowing it out and might just free up and start working.
