I like these obviously since I have two, though not this particular model. I’ve been a little mystified that so many of the South Bend reels have been and continue to be available new in the box. Many appeared to be stored. I know about one store whose contents was sold and the new owner made a lot of these available. Both of mine came from that store. They were sold quite reasonably on EBay for quite a few months. Late 70s to around 1980 would be the correct dating of these. I’ve started using a grease called Super Lube synthetic grease. I changed because I have so many Mitchell vintage reels and several of the Mitchell experts I have gotten to know urged me to do so. It is a white shirt translucent grease that seems to last a long time before any drying out or hardening occurs. It is great for Michells. I still prefer Penn synthetic fishing reel oil on all my reels. As long as you consistently clean and service these South Bend reels they will really last and work well even in saltwater. Great video Dennis. I may have to take another look at these. These are beautiful reels! Oh, I caught what you did with the oscillating block but only because I did the same thing with one of mine the first time I serviced one. LOL
Hi, We have most certainly been buying from the same store. I have a feeling that there are more NOS still out there. (This was my reel).
Be well!
South Bend went through several mergers and bankruptcy reorganizations. I imagine each left unsold stock that got warehoused somewhere and liquidated without resellers when released. Nice finds guys! Dennis
That'l fish! What a good looking NOS Reel!
It will, but this is a new old stock reel. I will guess it with be a show reel and not a go reel - Thanks Nick - Dennis
Great video as always Dennis. I just got a Penn 49 on e bay and looked up a video you did back in 2018 to get up to speed on that model before I decided. What a great reference source you provide us all, thanks.
You are welcome Brad. Yeah that 2018 is when I started, so I am still building the library. I never thought there would be so many reels to do! Best wishes - stay safe, I see it is spiking in your area again. - Dennis
Awesome video as always. Thank you I truly enjoy your videos!
Glad you like them! Please stay watching - Dennis
What year is that reel, just bought one couldn't find very much information on it?
I can only guess and say early 1980s - I am not sure. Maybe another viewer can help - Thank s - Dennis
