This movie was the very first 40k content I ever came across after the original Chaos Gate game. Dated visuals but the voicework carries the whole film so much it brought the graphics to life. The whole film in concert captures the 40k universe so well without trying to Disneyfy it in anyway which Hollywood always end up doing. Yes Space Marine 2 brought me here. Thank you for this important nostalgia

The story is trash. A neophyte becomes Company Commander after a single mission. It was about as lore breaking as it got. I do agree though the acting was good but the actors involved are all good and veteran actors so I'd expect nothing less.
@@saladinbob I disagree, it showed how cunning and how vunerable under prepared chapters are against the forces of chaos. Demons are still incredibly hard to deal with for seasoned experienced chapters. It was not a full scale warp rip, only minor demons got through, this was the only major threat to breach the warp. Imagine if there was an army of these things to deal with?. This is also in the early days of the chapters lifes I believe as well, which further establishes how green some of them are.
The CG in 2009 was much better than this, but i am guessing this was a smaller studio in Canada. There were CG movies in the 2000s that looked better, like Final Fantasy, but still they did a good job with the tech they had at the time. What sells a good CG movie is lighting and dynamic shadows. These were still in their infancy in the 2000s. Still, if you add a brightness correction and some film grain effects and a few filters here and there, this movie could look a lot better. However we have to thank the OP for making the 4k HD version.
Bought this the day it was released, this must be my 19th or 20th time watching it - and it's just as brilliant as the 1st time - who doesn't get chills when we see the Thunderhawk for the 1st time, especially when the Land Speeder emerges!
While the story is simple, it is still enjoyable. Only complaint is the sound effects for power armors that sounds like made of plastic, not ceramite steel (which, I guess, should sound metallic ;)). Thanks for this remastered version!
i remember people talking badly about this movie but after watching it for the first time I can't say I feel any negative emotion towards it, voice actors did great and overall its a fun piece of 40k media :)
Well, the CGI didnt age well, the story is.... more a justification for single scenes and the lore is wrong on many things. But its okay. We didnt have much back then. Not even the first Space Marine had been released back then.

I have 3 armies, Grey Knights ( I bought a huge army for apocalypse games) , Dark Angels that I sold my Chaos SMs to start , and a small army of Necrons I traded about 1000 points of Grey Knights for …. And I still have no OG 1st run Grey Knights from 92 that were released for the first time in a white dwarf.
Same with me, I started just yesterday after learning about space marine 2. I vaguely remember playing the first one all those years ago, and I am so pumped for Thursday when I get to play it

I remember the Gamesday this came out, the trailer was BLASTING on a loop next to the Fantasy Flight booth as they tried to sell Relic. Poor guys had to listen to bolters firing all day that could be heard clear across the convention hall.
This was one of my favorite warhammer movies, seeing it again with higher resolution, looks nice in my opinion, I fail to see why people dislike it, but otherwise this is a nice film.
Animations were ten years behind even at the time. Story was bland. Voice acting was bland with some exceptional parts. Even the Space Marine video game which came out around this time was better graphically.

The animation is a little dated now (id love a recreation in unreal engine with the new space marine models.) Everything else is top tier. The phenomenal english voice cast is also why this works so well. Ahead of its time and a work of art. Thank you for improving the visuals and making it even more watchable. FOR THE EMPEROR!

Bought this when it came out on bluray, have enjoyed watching it several times, the CGI beats a lot of those B movies out there and the voice acting is great. In regards to people not liking it, based on the price of a new bluray ($150) you’d never know that . LOL

What always bugged me about this movie is having Space Marines vs Chaos Space Marines didn't give any scale to them. Just guys fighting spikey guys. A scene where they maybe took out some human cultists would have been good.

While the plot, the dialogues and and the CG in this movie are all ridiculously bad, I now think about it with fondness, as a throwback to the times when Warhammer 40k universe has not yet become the perpetually commodified Marvel-type pop culture monstrosity as we know it today.
I love the overall tone of this. They really did a great job with the demon too imo. In and out of focus, moving like a shadow out of the darkness. I dont even notice the animation quality. Games worksshop has never given fans great animation unfortunately.
People may ask "why Hollywood cannot make movies like this?" My answer is, because people who work outside of Hollywood understand 40k and are more talented.
I think If this was a *strictly* fan-based film, like Astartes or the works of Sodaz, it would have been praised to some degree. But considering the amount of money, hype, work and raw talent put into this (John Hurt, wtf?), only to have a boring story, poor CGI, lousy sound quality and totally scripted dialog...it just saddens me. STILL, it's "okay" to watch in a non-serious way. Especially when compared to anything Netflix is throwing at us these days. Killer OST though, I will say that.

Yes, the score is the only exceptionally good thing about The Ultramarines. Sadly (or maybe for the better, actually) GW rarely excels in this type of content. This makes me think of The Lord Inquisitor, a very promising fan film project that was supposed to come out circa 2013, but unfortunately has never seen the light of day. Even its teasers looked 100 times better than this movie though.
If a gun "jams", (and there are several kinds of malfunctions, the most dangerous being a squib load), you can "un-jam" a gun. You cycle it, remove the jammed shell. You don't have to just toss it. Maybe he's concerned that he won't have time and can't afford to be distracted but sometimes I wonder if the people who make scenes like that shoot firearms in real life, respectfully.
In their defence, they are firing bolt shells. They are essentially micro rockets that also have an explosive head that detonates after penetrating the target. With potentially a full magazine of these rounds, that weapon could detonate like a small bomb in his hands
I have to say, very well done. The ending, after the slaying, feels a little ... abrupt. Still, this was good. I enjoyed it and did not see what happened coming!
The best parts of this movie are the bolter sounds and the chaplains "burn heretics". Don't worry dorks, Henry Cavill will deliver on the 40k tv series, I'm sure of it.

I really like the exaggerated armor, oversized weapons and titanic ships in 40K Warhammer. It's great visuals. And interesting comments on warfare.

Yes, the score is the only exceptionally good thing about The Ultramarines. Sadly (or maybe for the better, actually) GW rarely excels in this type of content. This makes me think of The Lord Inquisitor, a very promising fan film project that was supposed to come out circa 2013, but unfortunately has never seen the light of day. Even its teasers looked 100 times better than this movie though.
If a gun "jams", (and there are several kinds of malfunctions, the most dangerous being a squib load), you can "un-jam" a gun. You cycle it, remove the jammed shell. You don't have to just toss it. Maybe he's concerned that he won't have time and can't afford to be distracted but sometimes I wonder if the people who make scenes like that shoot firearms in real life, respectfully.
In their defence, they are firing bolt shells. They are essentially micro rockets that also have an explosive head that detonates after penetrating the target. With potentially a full magazine of these rounds, that weapon could detonate like a small bomb in his hands

I have to say, very well done. The ending, after the slaying, feels a little ... abrupt. Still, this was good. I enjoyed it and did not see what happened coming!
The best parts of this movie are the bolter sounds and the chaplains "burn heretics". Don't worry dorks, Henry Cavill will deliver on the 40k tv series, I'm sure of it.
