- *WARNING: Bad Audio* DO NOT WATCH IF YOU ARE SENSITIVE AND LIKE TO COMPLAIN. Now that, that is out of the way. In this video I have a look at a 2014 Jeep Compass that was dragged in on the hook because it will crank over but will not start. Let's see if we can diagnose it in the parking lot so we don't have to push it inside. -Enjoy!
PART II: • Jeep Compass: Crank, N...

Replaced my wife’s power steering pressure hose yesterday (03 Odyssey). Kept thinking to myself, Eric says “if I can do it, you can do it.” Sometimes yes, but it always takes 5 times longer than it should. I also cuss a lot more than you. Thanks for all you do! Always in awe of your skill.
Everyone is slow at first. After the first time it gets a lot faster, and from there there's nowhere to go but down. Speed is not indicative of skill, it's indicative of, well, you've not done it before!
I have been a mechanic over 20 years. If it's done right, it was worth the time, anything can be broken quickly.
And, you know, when disassembling complex devices it helps to TAKE DISASSEMBLY PICTURES. Hmmm.
Can't thank you enough because of your video ,I'm up and running .I talked to a few garages before I saw your video ,would even give me a clue about jeep relay problems. I THOUGHT fuel pump problem ,neutral safty switch ,I was checking everything .Thanks to people like you posting I've still got money in my pocket for coffee and my wheels are rolling .Thanks so much for all your posting . I'm one happy camper. Keep up the fantastic work
Finally! A real swear word! Oh God, it's like a sneeze that finally came out!
I had to go back and listen to it again. I wasn't really sure I heard it right
History was made at 8:12
This SMA video was brought to you by gale force winds and the rarest of 4-letter words.
Haha yes, after I don't know how many years that's the first time I've heard a swear here. So he is human after all! I take it we're all going to unsubscribe and flag this video, lol.
I laughed...not because of the curse, but from the dropped relay...im a tech its very funny when it happens to someone else!
I am not sensitive, but I always complain anyway. My late wife called me the "chronic malcontent". Love your vids and the STUFF you put up with to share your knowledge.

Dude you absolutely saved me and my buddy we were camping in the most back @$$ place in pa and his jeep died what little cell service we had we found your video ended up making a jumper out of an old piece of Romex we found beaten down with a ratchet over a stump... got us home🤙
“I know it’s windy as heck, deal with it!” A man confident in his followers dedication.
Keep up the good work Mr O.
U save my life, I had my 2016 compass junked for three weeks and this pandemic made everything impossible to get it service. My brother help me and we found that the gas pump was working yet not spark on the ignition coils. Your video was savior. We swapped the relay and on it was on the first try. In my case it was grim and dirt on the relays contacts. No sign of corrosion on the connections we tested all the relays and they all work, gave them a good clean.
Probably not the first to say it but I am blown away by your diagnostic skills
Funny you mention blown away, seeing as comments were made about gale force winds and seeing Dorothy and Toto blow by 😂😂😂😂
What a genius location for a relay box, low in the engine compartment! No wonder Jeeps are plagued with problems!
Depends on the Jeep ... which isn't saying much, especially if you're talking about something that was "quality engineered" and made by Chrysler.
Hey, you gotta oil your relays somehow
Engineered failure designed to produce revenue streams. Keeps America working! And consumers pockets empty! (c;=
"Lets put an electrical junction box in the wheel well. GOOD IDEA!!!"
Thanks Mr O. for another great vid.
Stay gold.
3:44 Let's get a Fleshlight? Seems an odd tool choice to diagnose an electrical issue. ;)

Yeah. Lol.
"Flesh Light"? LMAO 3:44. Once again great video. :-)
KyBigGuns lol glad it wasn’t just me!
I think that is what he said..... someone needs to get some more “sleep”
I looked it up... :o

@@dannyyu2932 very cool danny yu, thank you!
my dad is having some issues with his jeep compass. finally, i said. i bet you my good ol boy up there at south main auto knows exactly what the problem is. same exact thing. you guys are awesome!!
Up Late 4 AM but I always love your videos I always learn something from you Eric o.You’re lucky dude and A hard worker.
Well, Eric now that I have watched part one part two now makes a lot more sense. Somedays we have it together and some days well you know. Good video. Guess people nowadays should not take their cars out in bad weather. Those green crusties will get you. ❤️️
No complaints.. Love the sound of wind and garbled voices.. The extended views of your back and shoulder are outstanding....LOL...always look forward to your vids.
Saved you a lot of diag time going straight for the relay. Nice. Thanks Dr. O!
Eric O. A HUGE thank you for posting this video because this is the very same issue I'm having with my son's 2015 Jeep Patriot with the powerful 2.4L so it looks like the same engine compartment you have in this video as my son's Jeep. I'll have to see what you come up with in PT 2. Again THANKS!!
It must be a Jeep thing or a Belvidere, IL where this Jeep and my son's Jeep was made
Belvidere has seen good times , and some reall rough ones too!
@@davidhamm5626 yes Sir just like now, they just laid off a bunch and how they did it was over the phone automated. I used to work at the Belvidere Assembly Plant back in the late 1980's when they we're building the New Yorker and Dynasty. I quit because my stepdad who worked in "Material" always tried being my boss lol so I joined the Army. Stayed active until 2008 with 21 years and now I'm a Sheriff's Deputy near Rockford, IL
@@davidhamm5626 you sound like you are familiar with the area
Yes I grew up in Rockford ! My oldest sister worked there, during the ' 60's and '70's. She was much older than me , so I only saw her on occasion , but I remember her working with the vynal tops, she brought one home , to show us how they would go one a car!
I do remember that she did not seem to be happy, but being a kid it did not make sense.
My father told me that the '54 Belvidere he had then was made there, and I was amazed.
I left Rockford in 1977,and moved to Colorado, but every time I see someone talking about the old stomping grounds, i chime in.
Have a good day everyone.
Insomnia got me watching the one and only Self Made Auto Channel I swear that is what I hear and so I'm stickin' with it that my story, as always good content, thanks for sharing....
I always hear 'self made auto channel' too! :D In any case, this self made auto channel kicks ass! \o/
The subtitles think he says "self made auto channel" also.
It's a twofer Sunday.
Awesome videos they definitely made my day
Just tried this on 2016 renegade. Worked. Your awesome!
Eric, they make small stick-on windscreens, Micover is one brand. Tryna help!
There's your problem, lady. It's a Chrysler.
Fiat!
@@scowell That's what I meant. Sorry.
Fix it again Tony
Thank you Eric. Good job. I appreciate your videos. Sounded like hurricane Ivan made landfall.
At 8:12 where Eric breaks his vow of no-swearing-on-the-channel. Oops
A broken jeep.....does a bear 🐻 create a stool in the woods? 🙄😂
Many a stool indeed.
James Nasto won’t see any of those terrible Fiats on my channel 🎣
I always thought it was the Pope that created woods stools and the bear that was of the Roman Catholic persuasion.
anymore that's not a good phrase, since the woods are being removed and bears migrating to suburban and city areas...
The Total Integrated Power Module is SO totally integrated the idiots at Jeep failed to integrate 4 of the critical relays and instead put them in a ridiculous little extra box in a stupid location low in the engine compartment that gets wet and is hard to access. The box is less than a foot from the TIPM so it makes zero sense. Yet another reason to never buy a Jeep. The engineering is laughably bad in so many ways.
thanks for the help. ive had my jeep sitting for a couple months and was getting a crank no start. turns out it was the corrosion on the relays and I found them thanks to your video.
A repair from the top of Ben Nevis.
Good work Eric.
Ahhh, the joys of rust-belt driving!
Nothing worse than wind. I don’t think I have ever seen one of those relay boxes corrode like that here in Colorado. It’s normally just a tipm failure. Nice work Eric O.
Being an FCA tech I must fix 6 of these a month. A really bad design. You have done a good, logical diagnosis.
Thanks for the video, this was my girlfriend's exact problem. Not sure how to fix it yet but at least we aren't towing the thing. Simple pigtail jumper and it cranks right up
Wow that's windy! I thought you were on my driveway for a minute lol on to part two! 👍☺️
In my minds eye I'm picturing a large fan, a lawn mower, a tractor, and a backing up truck circling you while you do this video. If I would have known I would have shown up with an air compressor and a ringing phone to complete the background noise BINGO card!
This video just saved my buddy a lot of time and money thank you very much
Another great video.thanks for dropping the relay makes the rest of use mere mortals feel human.😝😝🇮🇪.
Thank you for releasing both parts at same time. I just said to Ivan yesterday a little piece of me dies each time he does a part one part two and i have to wait. Because i start thinking what if i get in an accident today or have a heart attack I'll never know how it ended. Tv shows i have to wait till full season is released to stream it all until it's over.
Well done Eric. I would say I couldn't hear Shit. But I did.
What I like to do in cases like this, just to get the vehicle inside, is I'll jumper power to one of the fuses that get fed power from the ASD relay. Such as Fuse32 as seen @2:12. They're nice and accessible and you'll bypass the relay all together.
hmm I'm curious to hear more
finally: a video that sounds like it might've been made in Texas (traffic, wind, and milspec language)
If you see Dorothy and Toto going by....get inside Eric.
The scanner computer used in the video: amzn.to/2H3l6dt Autel MK908 Ultimate Wireless Automotive Scan Tool with ADAS, ECU Coding, Full Bi-Directional Control, ABS Brake Bleed, OE-Level All Systems Diagnosis
As soon as I saw Compass and crank/no-start, I was thinking you might be in that relay block. I have a Caliber and, after remembering your last go-around with that relay block, checked them last fall while I was replacing the driver's side headlight assembly. Pulled the fuel pump relay, one pin had green crusties where a control side pin should have been. I was pissed but at least found/fixed it before it failed completely.
There's no wind down south Eric... Hope this helps??
Great video, and thanks for sharing.
3:44 'Let's get a Fleshlight' 🔦🤭😂
Preceded at 1:19 by "...we're gonna give it the held hand job here..."
Bad audio or not, always a great video, thanks Eric O.
Interesting video so far will check out part 2.
I know you’ve steering away from tool videos but as a fellow technician, albeit one with much less experience, I would appreciate some input from you sir. Especially in the scan tool area. You’re a man of many scanners and I have but one( OTC Encore), and I have been thinking about upgrading. I know you’re not a tool channel but a video here or there focusing on diag tools or general tools would really benefit the technicians in the crowd. Thank you.
7:43 sounds like the OG SMA intro!
I just ran into this last week on a 2011. Both the fan and ASD relays use the same power feed. Repairing the fan relay terminal will solve your problem. I filled the upper and lower side with dielectric. The box is not sealed at all.
You sir, saved hours of diagnosis. Same exact relay is rotten on ours. Thank you.
Did I hear that right ????
The tripod is a little inconvient so we are going to give it THE HAND JOB here.... LMAO....spit my drink out on this...😭
I had same relay issues with a 2014 jeep patriot. Cvt didn't feel right. Didn't start sometime. Every relay in the wheel well needed to be changes due to corrosion. Cvt started acting proper and vehicle had no more issues
Eric,
Great video - looking forward to part 2! Why does FCA have to bury that relay box like that?
Thank you to Keith for info!
SMA#1
God bless
Paul
You need a flufy cover for your microphone.. but hey, your frustration with the wind makes for a better video... keep rockin' Mr O
I've seen fuse/relay/computer modules get corrosion straight down to the PCB before on Freightliner Cascadia trucks. If you have one Relay do that, expect the rest of the box to be toast. lol
That relay box where it is would be like putting a sub-panel for your house on the roof. This vehicle was developed without design restraints applied: where electrical may and may not be installed for one.
I think that's the first time I heard you curse, Eric! Lol
there's a few for the swear jar!!!
I would bet that there is more corrosion underneath on the wires of that relay box. Fixed one of those with the same problem.
A first from SMA...Eric fault finds from the top of mount Everest. Let's hope he makes it back!!
AKKKKKKK! You said Sheeee it.
I would have said a lot worse and started looking for the BFH. Then hopefully before I found the BFH a coffee break would ensue. Otherwise real money gets spent.
Complaining I get so much of that at work from the residents which means it's your lucky day. I don't like it when it's done to me so that means I won't do it to you. Now that I got the disclaimer out of the way. I always enjoy your video's so on to part two!!
On to part two. This is getting interesting.
Iv done 1 or two of these as well. Last one had a' new box in it already with wire nuts and all.
I think alot of us feel Eric O.'s frustration at 8:09
NAUGHTY WORDS!
*Looks at the Jeep badge* "Well there's your problem lady!" JK, i actually like old school jeeps and have a dream of fixing up and restoring an old school wrangler 4cyl. But the new jeeps are garbage!
“Shiiit”... at this moment, every person that has worked on a vehicle, knew he done dropped something in the abyss
That radio is the cheapest double DIN touch screen available on amazon. Only $50. I bought one for a beater and wish I had just spent the $200 for a decent one.
I don't want to hear any complaints about the wind noise. If you must know Eric O had Betsy Ross's original old glory sent to him by the Smithsonian to fly above south main auto for memorial day weekend! The liberty bell will come from Philadelphia to Avoca NY approx. July 3rd through the 5th. To the brave men and woman in the service now and past. Thank you for your service! And for those who gave all thank you for your sacrifice! You will always be remembered!
Great explanation 👌. Is there's any chance that you can share with me the diagram of fuse 32, which I believe it goes to the fuel pump and ECU please. I can't communicate with the ECU. Brown and white wire.
Kind regards
3:44 A Fleshlight. Did you catch that?? Lol!!
lol I just fixed the exact same relay on a 2008 jeep compass. I couldn't get the original connector fixed up, so I just externally mounted the relay next to the box.
I also moved the relay box up towards the battery, since there's plenty of slack in the wiring harness. Not sure why they would slap a bunch of relays where it's prone to corrode
I saw a spark on the positive feed wire to the fuse box when you cranked it
I was wondering why any engineer would think that that is a good spot for a fusebox, then I remembered that it's a Chrysler product. A friend of mine worked for Jeep as a head auto electronics engineer and he said they always do shit like this, which is why he left the company.
I'm really laughing out loud right now. Had a car come in the other day with the same problem. I didn't watch part 2 yet, but I have a feeling that you're going to find the wire corroded into that first relay, and Chrysler in their genius thinking decided to daisy chain all the other power feeds for the control size of the relays together. If one goes bad, they all go bad. Genius
does and did chrysler even engineer the harnesses on their own or spec the materials and parts anymore? same question for all the manufactures
Yup . ..that was the issue. Cant say thank u enough
Wicked windy deal with it! 💨🌬
i find ALOT of compasses and patriots that have the corroded wires in the relay box its always my dead gove away when i have no power at the 2 15a fuses that come from the main relay. the worst part is they all share one power wire for the control side
I watch both parts and figured I’d ask as it gonna be to much work for me to fix the relay box. When you jump started her, did you leave the wires in place on the main relay to get from point A to B or can they be removed once the engine is running ? Also do the rad fans kick in or will I need to jump them as well. Trying to save me a tow bill, if I can get her to my local mechanic shop, then I’d jump the relays.
Ive ran into this problem once on a patriot and a caliber. Both times it was the starter control side tho causing no cranks
I have a 2012 jeep compass 2.4L. Every time I hit a bump or go over 50mph it acts like it's cutting out and breaks stop working and the abs, traction control lights come on. Also I have never heard the radiator fans come on.
way to go again eric o.
Wish me luck...doing a power steering rack in my dads 03 Buick LeSabre without a lift today..seals decided to blow right in front of my house last night
Micheal Plummer at least it did it in the driveway and not out on the road. No tow bill or headache getting it off the road.
I don't think those were that bad to change, but I may be thinking wrong vehicle...............
شكرا جزيلا لكم استاذ وتحيه خالصه لك من العراق
Will the motor crank with this problem? Our compass turns fine but does not fire nor try to, no hint of spark....
Hay welcome back sir eric 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪😜😜😜😜😜🤩🤩🤩😇😇😇😇
Informative video, but I'm technically impaired when it comes to new vehicles. I really just want to know where the fuse box is in a 2018 Jeep Compass Trailhawk. I can't find a fuse box in the cabin. I guess it's under the hood.
Love your videos,, you are the man.. Dr of mechanics!!..
Great job again like always
Great job, and great
Video thank you Eric!
Love your shows. learn a lot. just thought i would pass on a tip i learned. If you place a piece of foam lightly across you mic on your camera it will block your wind and people could hear you talking. Thanks for the great leaning lessons. Take care O family..
Hi I was wondering If I can have the pdf schematic for the jeep compass. The picture that was put on the video was a great help thanks :)
On to part Duo!
Hi, how do you pry off the lid on relay box? Looks like has tabs holding it in place. Also I’ve see video where the whole box is off the bracket it sits in, do you just pry off by hand?
batten down hatches!! there's Squall coming in!!
Great Video Eric O
Here in North Dakota, any wind 25mph and under is considered "light".
Ha! Got a jeep commercial for this video.
How is your overlander jeep setup going? Haven't seen an update on that unit for a while. Guessing you'll be checking it over before using it this season. Could you do an update on your jeep? Thanks either way!
I have no idea how I worked outside for all those years. I can't hack it now - got too spoiled by the lack of wind, rain, jacks, and jack stands. I don't think I'd be able to film outside - if I wasn't complaining, I'd be swearing non-stop, at full volume. 🤣
How infuriating is that? Nobody labels the friggin relays! Not even Mitchell, let alone Chrysler. Unreal! 21st Century engineering for ya right there.😔 On to part 2!😎
Excellent. Thanks for sharing.
My first thought was TIPM! You look cold, go inside!
