That train whistle was awesome...absolutely brilliant....I'm so happy you filmed this bit!! Made my late night viewing...I love steam engines!!😍 I used to ride a steam train every year growing up ...it was a field trip yearly in my school..I loved it so much..thank you!! 😊x
Glad you enjoyed it Susan, it was a hoot wasn't it. Can't beat a steam engine, when I travelled regualrly by train, steam was over, but I have fond recollections, as a real youngster. Take care xx
Leather hats are no good in the heat Alan as they make you head sweat because no absorption on the inside , felt or cloth better . I just love the old steam engines and the smell of steam takes me back to younger days . Thanks for the vlog :-)
I bet every boater has ended up in the canal at some time or other, you were lucky with your vice like thigh grip ha ha!!! What amazing weather, and more to come. What a lovely old steam loco, nice to see....take care.
I asked for a lift from a passing boat on our canal once and after a cruise for about a half mile the chap began to pull into the bankside to drop me off. We heard a shout and looked round this blokes wife had slipped and fell into the canal. I restrained myself and chocked on my beer laughing when relaying the story to fellow drinkers. It obviously was not funny for the poor lady ! !
Thanks both. It was a lovely hot day and the train ride was a pleasant diversion from the canal. Unlike you though I didn’t get any special treatment. Take care x
Another enjoyable vlog, Alan. I particularly liked the steam train footage. While not "green," they have so much more character than modern diesel electric. Cheers, Zach.
Hi Alan that was very enjoyable and a bonus with the steam train, the way you refill the greaser is the correct way, and when doing swing bridges solo always hold you bow line .Cheers.
Thanks Ramsey. Hold the bow line with the idea of pulling the boat through? Don’t think mine is long enough to do that! As there aren’t any swing bridges in my immediate area, it’s not something I’ve given much thought to. Cheers
We think we saw one of those big waps/hornet things in July. It came in through the bow doors (caused a panic inside), flew through the boat and came out the stern door.
sallyu1 As someone else mentioned, it probably was a hornet, I didn’t think of it at the time. It was interesting the way it went in and out, then in again and finally out. I was very relieved! 😃
You don't disappoint with your vlogs Alan. The Battlefield Line is one of my favourites and I am well overdue for a visit. Someone else mentioned hornet and I think that was what your wasp-like insect might have been. Hornets are indeed quite large and look terrifying.
Thanks very much Dave. I didn’t think of hornet at the time but that must have been what it was. Enjoy your trip if you get along to the Battlefield Line.
Hi Alan Another very pleasant vlog, thank you. Your enormous wasp sounds like a hornet, we get a few here in sw France, and they do look lust like an enormous wasp. Looking forward to the next vlog.
Thanks Alan that was a really good vlog. I've looked online for advice about single boaters doing swing bridges and lift bridges but there is very little, I guess they are all so individual that it might be difficult to prescribe a method, so it is probably down to luck as in your case. I'd be really interested if others have any suggestions. The Battlefield Railway looks great, not far from me so gonna have to visit. Take care now. Alan
Cabin Cruiser Adventure Thanks for doing that, I don’t think there can be any single way of dealing with a swing bridge, as they’re all different and the way you approach them also has a factor ie they swing towards you or away. Glad you enjoyed. Cheers
Cabin Cruiser Adventure I don’t believe they do, I’ve certainly never heard it mentioned. Fortunately, I’m not in an area where there are swing bridges.
its true ,it is certainly not as easy for the single boater,so with that in mind i guess you need to take care on the choice of canals you go on ,there are a good few swing bridges on the leeds and liverpool and a few on other northern canals ,so take care Alan ,but saying that you always a joy to watch thanks
Many thanks Alex, glad you enjoy watching. Sometimes it may be necessary to wait for another boat, so those canals with many swing bridges are probably best done in summer when it’s busier.
Enjoyed the steam train! We did a historic steam train (Train de L’ardeche) last year in Tournon Sur Du Rhône Fr. Alo have done the Cass Steam Railway in West Virginia, USA. Another great vlog 😁

Ooh the two best things in the world - steam trains and canal boats nice 👏❤️😁x
Morrislouise Eagle I couldn’t agree more. Cheers 👍
thanks again for another great video....
Thank you for sharing a very relaxed vlog.
The steam train footage was great. I love the sound of the horn ... sort of mournful...then back on the canal ...lovely 😊
Hi Christine. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Steam trains are always very evocative.
Hi Alan
Another nice vlog lovely cruising weather glad you enjoyed the heritage railway look forward to next vlog
Many thanks Ron. The steam railway was a pleasant diversion from the cut. Cheers
Thank You for the ride along Beautiful area !!
Leather hats are no good in the heat Alan as they make you head sweat because no absorption on the inside , felt or cloth better . I just love the old steam engines and the smell of steam takes me back to younger days . Thanks for the vlog :-)
Many thanks Stephen. I appreciate what you say about the hat but I sweat very easily and the type of hat won’t make any difference regrettably. Cheers
Thanks again Alan,lovely ride,boat and train,take care,rob.
Many thanks Robert, glad you enjoyed it. Cheers

The Ramblings of Bry I was lucky in this instance. Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed.

22:44 Ha ha 😂 - it's wonderful the freedom an owner has to do what they want with their narrowboat.
That was a bit Addams Family! Cheers
The first part of this vlog shows that you meet a better class of people on the cut ! Thanks for another enjoyable vlog. Happy travels.
C Cooper There are certainly some very helpful people about but that’s not always the case regrettably. Glad you enjoyed.
Lovely vlog Alan, it brought back so many happy memories of the Ashby and our trip on the Battlefield line. So glad you got to ride on the train. x
Thanks both. It was a lovely hot day and the train ride was a pleasant diversion from the canal. Unlike you though I didn’t get any special treatment. Take care x

Thanks David. I am sure you’re right, I didn’t think of it at the time, as I’m not overly familiar with them. Thanks for watching. Cheers
Great visuals, presented in a very pleasant manner !
Thank you Alan (-;
That's very kind of you to say Walter, thank you. I hope you enjoy the Ashby Cruising series. Cheers, all the best Alan
Nice work Alan great vlog
Thank you for making them.
Thanks David, I’m really glad you enjoyed it.

Check out @NarrowboatJourneys, they seem to be the bane of his life.
Cabin Cruiser Adventure Thanks for doing that, I don’t think there can be any single way of dealing with a swing bridge, as they’re all different and the way you approach them also has a factor ie they swing towards you or away. Glad you enjoyed. Cheers
Do you ever get volunteers manning the swing and lift bridges? Or do they just do the locks?
Cabin Cruiser Adventure I don’t believe they do, I’ve certainly never heard it mentioned. Fortunately, I’m not in an area where there are swing bridges.

Great video Alan
lovely shirt!
We used to pack grease into things like you did when I was at British steel yrs ago Alan, better than getting it all over your hands
Excellent video as usual. Very relaxing.
Nice one Alan ✌️
hi alan...is there any video of the wasp attack...i would enjoy that!!!!!!
Hi Greg. Only what I refer to in the video. I think it was determined it must have been a hornet, rather than a wasp. Cheers
I think your wasp was probably a hornet, they are very large.
Royandloraine Northwood I think your spot on, I didn’t think of it at the time. I had certainly never seen anything of that size before.
Kinda like Wily E Coyote
