  • Review and thoughts on my hardtail MTB after converting to a mid-drive eMTB using the Tongsheng TSDZ2 with Open Source Firmware. Bike has about 500 miles on it since conversion with mixed use of off-road (MTB trails), greenways (paved or hard pack gravel), and chip&seal /blacktop backroads. At time of recording I also have over 700 miles on my full suspension Giant Trance X E+ 2 Pro 29r to compare against.

Notice at the very start of this video with the motor screaming, the MTB tires are still installed.

can you get rid of the top speed limit?

Yes but as mentioned the gearing is more of a limit. Even with a rear 11t cog. Putting on a much bigger front sprocket would make it struggle up hills.

Is this the 500W version? How would you rate the strength of the motor?

48v kit running the open source firmware so it can be set at various wattages. I've got mine set to go no more than 380watts so it stays cool- plenty of power even at that.

You didn't say which power of motor you had, which was it, 250, 350 or 500W?

      This is exactly it:

@@MTBPerspectiveThis link is to the version B. I understood the one in the video is the previous version, correct? Btw, I have exactly the same kit and was looking for a review of it. I agree it is not for real mountain biking, but it is fun and good enough for less demanding trails /roads. Thanks!

I got mine mid 2022 so they likely have updated to the B version. As mentioned towards the end of the video it is a great kit for non-mtb riding but if Id did it again I'd skip the open source and just use the standard kit and matching battery voltage for any of the tongsheng kits. Gets old fast taking them apart to replace burned out motors and controllers.@@cilami
