I am going to set this up in my back yard into my net and just work on getting the feel for this. I definitely don't swing like this currently and it will probably take some work but like you said, this can be done slowly and ramp up after the motion gets grooved. I'll probably setup some pool noodles instead of golf clubs and buckets though. The end of the head cover is about 8 inches in front of the lead elbow and the bucket is 18 to 24 inches behind the ball and the back of the bucket is in line with the ball. This kind of feed back is really great for practicing correctly. Thanks Steve.
Steve: A face on view of the drill station setup and a few swings might be useful additions to the lesson. But the whole video made a lot of sense. Will try to incorporate this drill into practice. Thanks, RK
Thanks so much. Finally, I got some time to set this up and was completely frustrated, I could not keep from hitting the bucket on the back swing. But, then with complete muscle relaxation, I was able to do it and then it was like magic. Thanks again.
Thanks Steve.. it feels so odd at the beginning, But then one gets used to it.. It makes me turn to the left so quickly. I am so eager to take it the range and hit a few balls on range once this lockdown is lifted!!
Gave this drill a try today with good results. Any chance there are still shots as to where the bag/stick/bucket are placed in regard to ball? Not sure I had it set up properly to achieve optimal results. Thank you
Love this drill and worked on it for an hour this evening; one question though: does the bucket being 18 inches behind the ball cause a “too inside” takeaway? I can do this drill just fine on downswing & through impact; I love the rotational feel; however, i felt like i was manipulating my takeaway inside rather soon.
You can just miss it and still be 'on plane', but if you're concerned, just move it outside the target line a couple of inches. Try double stacking buckets.
Ref. Comment earlier in week "pulling my irons left". This seems to straighten them out, with whiffle balls in back yard. Going to try it at the range tomorrow. Thanks
Thank you for this video. I am currently using it to work on swallowing the club while rotating and swinging left better. My one question is how to stop moving my head up and back on my downswing.
If your handle is exiting low left, your head won't be able to back up. Go review my video on the One Drill and check out how I set up the golf bag to force the right exit.
@@Inmotion70 Just did. Looking at it, I had my alignment stick positioned between my arms instead of in front of my left elbow. Thank you for the prompt response.
@@AtoTheFher If you'd like, send over a video to Steve@hititlonger.com. I think tightening up the exit will force the butt back and the head from backing up. Start small.
Perhaps try to SHALLOW the club instead? Everything will feel better I promise! Good drill Steve, is there any danger the bucket position might compromise the takeaway though?
Steve, very nice video. Question for you. With the feeling of throwing the club from the top that you have shown in your other videos, with the club hit that bucket in the downswing? Or will the throwing of the club coupled with the pivot still bring the club on an inside path and miss the bucket?
Steve, one more question. Will the feeling of the right wrist throw from the top still let you retain the flat left wrist and the bent right wrist that all good ball strikers have at impact? I am guessing that the pivot when done properly in concert with the club throw will help maintain those variables?
@@kmille1398 Don't try to retain anything. Pivot and throw the clubhead with whipping wrists and the left wrist will be fine. It is a mistake to chase the look of a photograph with fluid motion.
It looks like u r taking club inside in backswing not going straight back as a first part of backswing as u have shown in other video. Am I missing something? Or, maybe I do not see because of bucket is blocking the view? I wish I could see in front view.but ultimately good lesson. Thanks.
Interesting set up addressing both sides of the equation. Will try it and give feedback how it performs next time I play. Which will be around sometime 2023 at the rate things are going.
Tried this drill and it worked instantly. Took away the alignment sticks and bucket and was still able to hit it pure. Was able to keep the feeling. Will start with this drill every time I practice. Need to hit the course now.
One thing i never understood about the mike austin swing is why his takeaway is so far on the inside of the plane. My coach points that out whenever i take it too far inside initially or drop too far down on the downswing. Is there a reason for this compared to something like a matt wolf takeaway?
@@Inmotion70 so was it common because of the equipment that necessitated it to keep the swing smooth and the shaft from flexing too much or was it just the style of swining back then aka from a lack of information? Im just wondering if mike austin did it for a “power reason” or thats just what he liked to do
Your videos are really keeping our minds off the stay at home madness. A front view camera shots would really be helpful to see ball placement. Maybe you can do a ONE LENGTH iron swing vid for some of us oddities in the future. =)
@Just bored Agree, he is the EXCEPTION to the rule. Besides an amazing pro, he's also a clever scientist & mathematician, unconventional but effective. I would think that 1 length irons will likely not work on most golfers.
You have a lot of great videos. If you are giving lessons to a person that's a slicer or over the top. When do you think that person is ready to tackle the golf course base on your drils. Because things change when we are playing compared to being on the range. When I'm on the range some of my irons shots are really good, driver needs a lot of work. When things starts to go wrong we or I go bad to old habits. So is it 7 out 10 balls or that wk or 2, of going through the drills without hitting the bucket or alignment stick in the bag etc? ⛳🏌️♀️🏌️♂️🏌️Thanks
Great question. Some people will remember exactly how they did it on the range, others will morph slowly over time as they go back over the top on the course, even though they FEEL like they are doing it right. Best argument for over exaggerating some of your reps.
Sir, it is not easy I tried at range. I am missing ingredient . You need to show this swing step by step from front view or back view. I love this type of swing but can not perform to hit straight. U need to elaborate this another video please. Thanks.
Awesome drill and can’t wait to try it out!😊
Wonderful tips

Hi Steve,
Can you also provide correct distances for basket and head cover so that we can use a driver for this drill? Great video.
Great drill. See the benefits. And also started your lessons. Have also changed my grip not interlocking and see the difference. Thanks
Excellent guidance. Many thanks

Excellent!

Great stuff, really, have you done any other videos on hand path on the exit side of the swing ?
Yes check my playlists for 'swing plane' and you'll find a bunch.
The sound is telling a great story.

Will do.
Great tip will try and comeback to you

Gonna try this one for sure. Been working in your swing of releasing from the top. The worst thing I do with it is to hit balls thin. Working on it

I wish I had thought of this a long time ago! I will try tomorrow in my back yard with my tired old whiffle balls.

It's not really that far inside...and it depends on which era you look at. This was a very common practice even among tour players back then.

This very much like Peter Kostis' "inside-to-inside" swing. Remember him?
Certainly any good downswing follows inside to inside in the impact zone. I wonder if Kostis meant it was ok to get a little inside on the takeaway.
Thank you Steve. Looks like a new training aid is born....some PVC and pool noodles.
Yes! Way to be creative. I was just drilling on it today and absolutely striping it. Best swings I've ever made I think.

Are you flapping when doing this drill?
Big time.
I would use a noodle instead of a bucket or towel, head cover
Plastic water bottles with just about an inch or two of water in them to hold them in place works well for me
when i look at Mike Austins swing .. he doesn't come out low and left .. it looks more up and straight out
Rory has always been much more inside out than necessary, and has paid the price. Remember the Masters collapse? The slumps?
