Michael Romeo is the KING of Neoclassical Prog - Sea Of Lies From The Guitar Chapter Young Guitar Video
#MichaelRomeo #LeviClayTabs #AmazingGuitar
What separates Romeo from all the other shredders out there is his ability to write absolutely killer riffs that make the songs actually enjoyable to the average listener. He's also great at composing orchestral parts.
Combine that with one of the best vocalist out there and you get the absolute magic of the 90's era of Symphony X, just timeless
I think the tapping part is so memorable because, to me at least, it's supposed to sound like roiling waves on a sea 🌊
I keep coming back to this part, maybe one day i'll be able to play it. The way he ends the tapped arpeggios on straight pedal point is so enjoyable and tasty to me.
His chops and musicality are without question…it’s the effortless way he plays
He’s so relaxed as he plays but never in a “look I KNOW I’m good” nonchalance
From my own hard fought experience lol playing relaxed is a MUST for playing any complex and fast with articulation. The relaxing my arms, shoulders, everything bit, was literally one of the hardest aspects of "shredding" when I finally got an instructor to show me how to properly. (Just my own personal experience) If I tense up incorrectly almost one bit, it can interrupt the flow and muscle memory, and absolutely ruin my playing articulation. Romeo's relaxation is some next level stuff tho.
I have been waaaiting for this section. Thank you so much for highlighting one of the most underrated neoclassical guitarists around!
Well, help the channel and share it, because thus far this video is TANKING!
Finally, the legendary "Sea of Lies" tapping section tabbed to perfection!. I'll rate this one of the top 5 tapping licks Ever!, only next to Eruption..cheers Levi!🤘
I love when you see him enjoying his craft. A true master!
Tapping is a such beautiful skill! Levi you should do a video about it!

Thanks
Romeo was a monster on guitar! I always have difficulty watching him play, however, since I become fascinated with the antics of his flamboyant hair which seems to have a life of its own! I begen anticipating where his hair is headed next, instead of watching his hands!
One of michaels straight up catchiest solos. Catchy ass song too. One of my favs.
saw them live last year and his playing is flawless live as well! a musical genius!
You’ve gotta do some Ron Jarzombek, I know you’re a fan!
I've been waiting for tabs of this song since you posted Michael Romeo's Tabs!
Levi, one of my favorite songs and solos has got to be Inferno... it has sooooo much pep! Just LOVE it
Don't you love them scam bots?
Agreed the tapping was very memorable! I’d like to see him redo it with better sound quality!
@LeviClay. great! Free postage? 😝
I think Sea of Lies is just a great song overall, not just because the solo, but also because the main riff is so damn catchy
Plus Russell is incredible on it.
I’ve probably watched his video like 10,000 times lol it would helped me so much if it had these tabs on the screen lol if you did his entire video like this you would be an absolute hero lol
I've done every solo from it
You have to respect the fact that he uses more scales and sequences then the other neo classical players.
Odyssey and V were such incredible albums... I wish the later stuff focused less on trying to be heavier and more on the progressive elements heavily featured in their earlier works.
That is pure class
Romeo is the GOAT. So what is your favorite Romeo solo? or maybe a top 5 is easier? My personal fav has always been his solo in Dawn of a Million Souls.
@LeviClay. LOL LMAO
I like this solo Divide & Conquer
@LeviClay. Still this hacking bs continues come on UA-cam fix this shit
The fact that his solo album is so good says alot about why he's so great. Yeah he has incredible chops but it's always musical.
Awe man that solo way was cool.
Nice work 🤟
What happened to that guy that looked like him on UA-cam? He had awesome guitar solos he wrote, with lots of views. He's vanished and I don't know how to find him.
I tried. And failed. But at least this motivated me to write a song called "Big Bends and Vibrato" based on measure 53 - the one measure of this that I could play...
🤣🤣 Brilliant! Had to go look at measure 53 obvs...😏
epic!
For the tapping bit, Does anyone know why he chooses to tap the last note on the high E instead of just using his pinkyor ring finger for legato?
A Huge guy with tiny hands. Just like Shawn Lane! When students used to tell me they couldn't play something because their hands were too small, I showed them Shawn Lane. Haha. No Excuses!
I legit thought the tapping section was keyboards when I first heard this.
Do you include standard notation?
Guitar pro files have both In
Anyway you can tab out Carlos Cavazo starlicks intro video?
That’s one technique I still haven’t jumped on
You're doing a lot on Michael Romeo, why don't you do something on Shawn Lane?
Actually why don't you check out the peace between Shawn Lane and Buckethead that was supposed to be unplayable.
Sergey golovin is also another guitarist worth looking into. I honestly don't think that there's a more diverse, original or fluid live guitar player.
Every album is a different style, completely original and ridiculously technical but he plays with absolute ease and perfection live on his instagram.
I literally did Shawn recently
@@LeviClay I just came across this channel a few days ago and I hadn't even made it that far.

As a suggestion for a transcription vid at some point, this one might be cool ua-cam.com/video/kdTMPeZ64wA/v-deo.html
Criss Oliva is another incredible underrated 80s/90s player who really doesn't get enough love for how awesome his playing was.
I plagiarised that tapping in my old band. It's fun to play
I'm calling the cops! 🧐👨✈
I dunno, man. Yngwie clones leave me cold. None of them are as interesting. Shredding is boring without interesting phrasing, which is why Per is so good.
Speaking of someone who can shred insanely and has unreal improv/phrasing ability -- despite looking like Howard Stern after taking puberty blockers -- how about Max Ostro?
You know this sounds nothing like Yngwie right?
@@LeviClay Of course he plays different licks, like the tapping sequences, but...let's see -- neoclassical style, A Phrygian Dominant scale, bars 18-19 are the single most canonical Yngwie lick possible -- so in fairness "nothing like" is a bit of a stretch. ;)
@@tomanderson6140 Jesus! Yngwie owns a scale now? 😂
I might argue that if your name is synonymous with just one scale… maybe you’re old and boring.
@@LeviClay Hey, I am *not* an Yngwie fanboy...but to his credit, he's demonstrated that you *can* actually make a career out of pretty much one scale (and usually the same key!), so more power to him. Gotta respect capitalism and a man who converted E Phrygian Dominant into Ferraris. :)
@@tomanderson6140 malmsteen proved you can make a career out of making slightly worse versions of the same album over and over. More power to him 😂
Downloaded in kazaa back then when starting guitar and the tutorials where not on demand...was searching something, download any "lesson" and pray that you didnt get a scrotum ib your safe.
And I got to download this masterpiece.
I was like months into guitar struggling with palm mute.
I fucking hated this video. Had to ignore it to not just "why even" and just let all the steings get rust in the darkness.
And then I saw George Bellas lesson for the sweep in airborne.
I bought new strings. Like kinda ropey and able to sustain human weight and a chair. I was foing to make a bend like no other you fucks.
But do not despair my child. Metronome and lowing it dpwn until ot sounds like a conversation between two R2D2 and upping 3 points and 2 and 3 and 2 does the trick. But dont leave anything on the stobe or you will find charcoal when you leave the studia after the first seasons.
So many of these “technically difficult to play” pieces are are also difficult to sit through. They’re usually cold and sterile noise with zero soul or feeling. A display of ability and nothing more. To me this falls under that category.
How exactly do you quantify "feeling" in this playing? What are you hoping to hear?
Usually, 'feeling' on guitar is measured in stuff like string bends, vibrato, being able to construct impactful chord progressions and play over them - you can't tell me Michael Romeo is deficient in that area. Also, I think if you were more au fait with his discography you'd find stuff which is totally contrary to your comment. Ie Communion and the Oracle, Paradise Lost etc. Would it help if he pulled a 'guitar face' or made a few mistakes? For me, he doesn't fall into the category of the Chris Impelliterri type guitarist with speed over substance. Romeo writes 'songs' - a lot of them just happen to be at a brisk tempo. Recommended listening 'V-The New Mythology Suite' by Symphony X.
There are tons of different soul & feeling. we love BB King, but also Romeo. nothing wrong here
Don’t be silly Hippobikeamus. Feel is a movable goalpost that guys like this get to trot out without defining to magically disqualify anything THEY happen to not like (usually things that challenge them)
