The Most EXPENSIVE Model That I've Painted.

  • I've been painting minis for a long time, and most of the models I paint are pretty cheap, but this time, well this is a collectors item, from a long time ago. The rarity and age of this model makes it quite expensive, even ignoring the cost of the company that made it.
But unlike the average collector, who will hide a model away and waste its potential, I'm a painter, and I'll paint this thing.

Looks good! But I think it needs a varnish to tone down the glossy finish on some of the material. An all over matte varnish and then a selective gloss varnish on things like the power sword will really help the uniforms look like they’re made of cloth and the sword look like it’s a shiner material.

I have a couple of these Black Library vignettes. They were hard to get for me, the window to order was usually closed by the time my magazine arrived from GW. Usually a frantic call across the pond netted my model. I remember this offer, but i passed. I got Ephrael Stern, Kal Jerico, Klovis the Redeemer and a couple others. Mine are still unpaintec, but they will be painted. Retirement is almost here.

@@EDSKaR Really shouldn't do that if it was properly matte varnished, models look fine at first then when you show a finished model it looks glossy as can be.
Honestly could be that your idea of matte is what we think of as satin, but that absolutely isn't matte, matte doesn't reflect light like that.
Matte surface is rough, gloss is flat. gloss reflects light and matte absorbs it outside light of the same color, so red reflects red. your sheen is on every colour. It objectivelly isn't matte, it just can't be scientifically.
What you have here is probably a matte varnish that has gone bad or been applied improperly or too many times.
I varnish paintings almost daily for customers before sending them the paintings they bought, so I take this stuff pretty seriously as I don't want to be out money. I varnish gloss then matte afterwards for minis, miniature matte varnishes are absolute nightmares tho, comes with the cheap price I guess. For paintings I use something similar to acrylic medium instead of gloss varnish then follow up with a matte varnish.
For miniatures that will be held tho, a gloss coat is recommended and then a matte varnish. Gloss protects, Matte makes it look good.
Do let the gloss varnish dry for a few days before applying the matte varnish, there is a difference between dry and set.
Because in your finished results you can see the light reflecting, but also on other videos you see the paint gloss but wherever you add stuff like snow texture effects/white pigment powder, it doesn't, so it's not the camera.
And legit, you don't need to thin with inks, one great thing about moving to professional painting on canvas is how much of the bs I learnt in this hobby that has been dispelled.
If you are seeing an improvement mixing inks in, throw the paints out and use better paints. I'd recommend ak interactive 3rd gen, they were acceptable for miniature paints, well rounded and little issues with them. Tho if you are up for using HBA's, just use liquitex pro heavy bodied acrylics, takes some getting used to but the results are really good.
You should also give yourself credit, your not a bad painter, I just think you want to paint a bit faster than you could so your results are only held back by the time you put it, which isn't to say they look bad, I liked your miniature painting. But your clearly getting messed over by the matte varnish somehow.
Tho do take better care of your brushes :P

Don't say you are a bad painter. You say yourself that you can see improvements from earlier paint jobs and I agree. A painter that is improving and trying new things is a Good painter. You tried some cold colors in the shadows this time and probably learned a lot from it. When it comes to the camo I think a simpler camo like the one you painted look way better on miniatures than to try and replicate a real world military camouflage pattern. You are a brave painter and with that you will continue evolve.
If I am to give one tip it is to use sharp tipped brushes for the details. Keep the paint out of the ferrule and clean out any tried paint you have there. I think you can re vitalize your existing brushes by using some strong paint remover and carefully clean the brush. Then use some brush soap to recondition the bristles. Always leave the brushes with some brush soap in the bristles shaped to a fine tip to dry when you are done painting.

I was just a wee nipper when BL had these vignettes and dioramas, so the only way I'd get my hands on these is overpaying on ebay or hoping I find a recaster with one tucked into their catalogue. I have a similar sort of set in my collection, though, the Magos and his techpriest retinue from the skullz promotion back in the day, I think it was 2000 or 2001? I snagged those on ebay nearly 15 years ago now for a pretty penny and lavished them with attention, doing the best I could do. I know this is a collector's piece, but I feel the need to say this.
God, GW stuff is all so unbelievably overpriced. Considering the absurd, CARTOONISH prices and the fact GW has repeatedly shown they hate their fans, I exclusively buy from recasters and printers.

@@Scaevola9449 i left 40k over 20 years ago for this exact reason, I popped back in recently for my Tanith project and was shocked at just how bad its gotten, and how many people are either blind to it or activly support the abuse from GW

Your painting is too military, it does break up the silhouette of the body, but in game models it's not the type of effect everyone wants, usually do a paint job that highlights the features of the model and gives charisma

I'm pretty sure it's a Blood Pact trooper, one of the Chaos cultist factions mentioned in the Tanith books.
